Book excerpt: Every time a heart-wrenching display of violence in the schools or an appalling act of childhood aggression achieves its '15 minutes of fame' in the media, we all shake our heads in dismay, despair over what should have been done and feel deeply grateful that it happened somewhere else. But, of course, there's no guarantee. These things can and do happen anywhere. And it is not what we do after, but what we can do before that matters. Teaching our children, in the early grades, about resolving conflicts is an urgently needed step in that direction.

Book excerpt: This volume began with a workshop of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence held in 2001. Concerned with embodied agents as cultural objects and subjects, the book is divided into three parts. It begins by drawing attention to the cultural embeddedness of technology in general and agent design in particular, as a reminder that there cannot be an agent without culture. The section concludes that agent systems not only can be used to establish a shared understanding, but can also promote the diversity of understanding and identity. Part II consists of chapters dealing with design concepts and reflections on cross-cultural believability. It suggests how an agent's behavior may be adapted to the cultural context of application while maintaining consistency and describes an approach based on the OCC model--which is widely known and used in the embodied agents research community. Next, the section suggests that Affect Control Theory--an empirically-based, mathematically-elaborated perspective on microsociology--can be incorporated into agents in order to give them a capacity for normative role behaviors and emotional displays. Subsequent chapters pass on from more general considerations to the design and implementation of cross-cultural characters and present virtual character design from the perspective of the artist and the practitioner in stressing that corporate culture and audience culture(s) both guide the design choices, but the resulting culturally adapted agent is "handcrafted." It ends with a chapter that reports cross-cultural user studies made in the UK, Austria, and Croatia. Part III discusses the potential of agents as mediators in intercultural communication. It includes an overview of the ways in which embodied agents are and could be used to coach the acquisition of intercultural communication skills, followed by a chapter that suggests agents could be used to intentionally mold intercultural communication. The last chapter addresses the need for a shared sense of community in large-scale collaboration systems for multi-national organizations that transcends any one cultural orientation and that is truly multicultural.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can science offer continued life? Is there life, after death? Is there really a God and a soul? In the case of Mr. Bradley (Buddy) Karr, a man with little more than the ambition to get a good night’s sleep, these mysteries come to surface in the twisted events of his five recurring dreams; each traveling a path to question science and faith. Why can he recall the events of these nocturnal adventures, but not comprehend a single word of dialog. Buddy undergoes sleep observation tests with speech inducement drugs. The analytic comparisons of the gibberish recorded by the clinic and his clear awakened narrations provide clues, but they are still unable to decipher any word meanings. Buddy’s tapes are sent to linguists and cryptologists for translation whereby a startling composition is finally created; one that generates broader questions. Buddy begins his own quest to locate sources ignoring advice and warnings from his doctors and friends. Aided by of a fair-weathered friendly clergyman: Reverend John Benson, the two set out to follow clues as Buddy becomes obsessed with the pursuit of a resolution that might cost him his life and endanger his friends and colleagues. Time has become a factor as Reverend Benson ponders his own beliefs. Failure in his mission could bring him to say goodbye to a healthy vibrant young victim of an ungodly mistake .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious, heartfelt, and refreshingly honest memoir and New York Times bestseller by the beloved comedic actress known for her roles on Freaks and Geeks, Dawson’s Creek, and Cougar Town who has become “the breakout star of Instagram stories...Imagine I Love Lucy mixed with a modern lifestyle guru” (The New Yorker). There’s no stopping Busy Philipps. From the time she was two and “aced out in her nudes” to explore the neighborhood (as her mom famously described her toddler jailbreak), Busy has always been headstrong, defiant, and determined not to miss out on all the fun. These qualities led her to leave Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of nineteen to pursue her passion for acting in Hollywood. But much like her painful and painfully funny teenage years, chasing her dreams wasn’t always easy and sometimes hurt more than a little. In a memoir “that often reads like a Real World confessional or an open diary” (Kirkus Reviews), Busy opens up about chafing against a sexist system rife with on-set bullying and body shaming, being there when friends face shattering loss, enduring devastating personal and professional betrayals from those she loved best, and struggling with postpartum anxiety and the challenges of motherhood. But Busy also brings to the page her sly sense of humor and the unshakeable sense that disappointment shouldn’t stand in her way—even when she’s knocked down both figuratively and literally (from a knee injury at her seventh-grade dance to a violent encounter on the set of Freaks and Geeks). The rough patches in her life are tempered by times of hilarity and joy: leveraging a flawless impression of Cher from Clueless into her first paid acting gig, helping reinvent a genre with cult classic Freaks and Geeks, becoming fast friends with Dawson’s Creek castmate Michelle Williams, staging her own surprise wedding, conquering natural childbirth with the help of a Mad Men–themed hallucination, and of course, how her Instagram stories became “the most addictive thing on the internet right now” (Cosmopolitan). Busy is the rare entertainer whose impressive arsenal of talents as an actress is equally matched by her storytelling ability, sense of humor, and sharp observations about life, love, and motherhood—“if you think you know Busy from her Instagram stories, you don’t know the half of it” (Jenni Konner). Her conversational writing reminds us what we love about her on screens large and small. From “candid tales of celebrity life, mom life, and general Busy-ness” (W Magazine), This Will Only Hurt a Little “is everything we’ve been dying to hear about” (Bustle).

This volume contains 34 invited papers from the First International Workshop on Embedded Systems. They present latest research results from different areas of computer science that are traditionally distinct but relevant to embedded software development (such as, for example, component based design, functional programming, real-time Java, resource and storage allocation, verification). Each paper focuses on one topic, showing the inter-relationship and application to the design and implementation of embedded software systems.
