Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The firm of General Mills is probably best known to millions of people as the maker of Gold Medal Flour and as the progenitor of that first lady of the kitchen and the airwaves, Betty Crocker. But, although its greatest fame is as a flour miller, the company engages in a host of other activities that attest to the foresight and creative thinking of its executives. In fact, the sky seems to be the only limit as the company extends its sights upward in Operation Skyhook, a United States navy research project for which General Mills makes and launches into the stratosphere giant plastic balloons. James Gray relates not only the history of General Mills since its founding in 1928 but also the background of the major companies that merged to form the larger corporation: the Washburn Crosby Company of Minneapolis, the Sperry Company of San Francisco, the Kell group of Texas and Oklahoma mills, and the Larrowe Milling Company of Detroit. Anyone interested in advertising and promotion will find fascinating the accounts of the early successes in radio advertising, including the first use of singing commercials and the phenomenal rise of Betty Crocker (voted the second best-known woman in America!) The scientific and technical research that is a cornerstone of the modern corporation is described in detail, as is the development of the products control method, a General Mills innovation now widely adopted in industry. For those curious to understand how business expands, for those interested in a close-up of industrial leaders, for anyone who wants to sharpen his view of America at work, this is an important book.

Book excerpt: 'Climbing is a bit like rolling a dice - sometimes things fall into place and you achieve your aim. Sometimes your number comes up.' - Sue Fear, April 2006 When mountaineers Lincoln Hall and Sue Fear collaborated in writing Fear No Boundary, neither could have imagined that within a year one would be left for dead and the other would die on the mountains they loved. In April 2006 Sue Fear, the first Australian woman to climb Everest via the North Ridge Route, set out to summit Mt Manaslu, the world's eighth highest mountain. If she achieved this feat, Sue would become the first Australian woman to have climbed five of the world's fourteen mountains over 8000 metres. Sadly it would be her last climb. Although Sue successfully summitted Manaslu on 28 May, tragically she fell to her death in a crevasse during her descent. Fear No Boundary chronicles the incredible journey Sue Fear took on her path to Everest, following her decision to make travel and adventure-guiding her profession. While Sue?s celebration of her fortieth birthday on top of Mount Everest in May 2003 and the nail-biting climb from Base Camp to the summit provides a framework, this updated edition also details Sue's other climbing achievements and includes a postscript outlining her final expedition. What drove this slightly-built and unassuming woman from Sydney's leafy North Shore to set her sights on a career as a mountaineer? How did she feel as a woman climbing in a predominantly male domain? These questions and more are answered as we follow Sue's journey around the world and off the beaten track to destinations such as Bolivia, Bhutan, Uzbekistan and Kamchatka, climbing the Andes, Mount Kilimanjaro and of course the Himalaya. Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2005 for services to mountaineering and the community, in particular the Fred Hollows Foundation, Sue's is an inspirational story. 'Sue was a beautiful person, a great Australian and an inspiration to The Foundation and to all those who knew her' - The Fred Hollows Foundation 'Sue Fear was inspirational. She was a vibrant personality, a mountaineer, a tireless worker for various charities and youth, and a good friend to many' - Australian Geographic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In C. L. R. James's classic Beyond a Boundary, the sport is cricket and the scene is the colonial West Indies. Always eloquent and provocative, James--the "black Plato," (as coined by the London Times)--shows us how, in the rituals of performance and conflict on the field, we are watching not just prowess but politics and psychology at play. Part memoir of a boyhood in a black colony (by one of the founding fathers of African nationalism), part passionate celebration of an unusual and unexpected game, Beyond a Boundary raises, in a warm and witty voice, serious questions about race, class, politics, and the facts of colonial oppression. Originally published in England in 1963 and in the United States twenty years later (Pantheon, 1983), this second American edition brings back into print this prophetic statement on race and sport in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February of 1990, the balloting process for the IEEE proposed standard P1149.1 was completed creating IEEE Std 1149.1-1990. Later that summer, in record time, the standard won ratification as an ANSI standard as well. This completed over six years of intensive cooperative effort by a diverse group of people who share a vision on solving some of the severe testing problems that exist now and are steadily getting worse. Early in this process, someone asked me if 1 thought that the P1l49.l effort would ever bear fruit. 1 responded somewhat glibly that "it was anyone's guess". Well, it wasn't anyone's guess, but rather the faith of a few individuals in the proposition that many testing problems could be solved if a multifaceted industry could agree on a standard for all to follow. Four of these individuals stand out; they are Harry Bleeker, Colin Maunder, Rodham Tulloss, and Lee Whetsel. In that I am convinced that the 1149.1 standard is the most significant testing development in the last 20 years, I personally feel a debt of gratitude to them and all the people who labored on the various Working Groups in its creation.

Book excerpt: The survey and the transference are the distinctive and operative acts in the transmission of real property and, where they differ from each other, one must of necessity control the other. This book addresses the aforementioned concepts by external explanations in order to understand the discrepancies between them. It also helps to avoid expensive and wasteful litigation over boundaries that were previously not in conflict. The text offers an extensive review of the law for boundary retracement and cites numerous case examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2013, 28 scholars from 19 countries gathered in Prague, Czech Republic, to explore the many complex issues surrounding pain. This unique meeting, the 4th Global Making Sense of Pain Conference, allowed participants to remain together for three days as they explored perspectives from many different disciplines -- from medicine to music; from art to medical humanities; from psychology to writing and rhetoric; from cognition to intuition. The multidisciplinary and cross-cultural nature of the conference provided an engaging forum for scholars to draw inspiration and knowledge on the nature and function of pain, as perceived through the lenses of various fields and research methodologies. This volume presents a sample of the contributions from this conference, divided into the following categories: Pain and Thinking, Contemplating Pain, Creating from Pain, and Personalising Pain.
