Book Synopsis Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers by : John Moran

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most countries in South-East Asia have established smallholder dairy farming industries through social welfare and rural development programs to provide a regular cash flow for poorly resourced farmers. These farms are now being treated as accepted rural industries and require a more business-minded approach based on changes to farm profitability. Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers gives smallholder dairy farmers the business management skills they will need to remain sustainable. Drawing on detailed financial analyses of smallholders in countries such as Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia, it shows how to budget cash inputs to match cash outflows during different seasons of the year, and how to invest wisely in improving cattle housing and feeding systems. If farmers make greater use of formats and structures for farm costs and returns, it will increase their awareness of the relative importance of all their financial inputs in terms of cost of production per kilogram of milk produced on the farm. It will also allow them to make more meaningful and timely decisions by correctly costing planned changes to their routine farming practices. The book will also be of use to support organisations to more clearly define the key drivers of profit on smallholder farms, and to government departments and national dairy organisations to routinely evaluate and update their industry policies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Business of Dairying How to Conduct Dairy Farming, for the Largest Profit This little book has been prepared for the use of dairy students, producers and handlers of milk, and all who make dairying a business. Its purpose is to present in clear and concise form various business methods and systems which will help the dairyman to reap greater profits. The main effort of every business man is to secure the largest possible return for every dollar expended, and it is hard to convince dairy farmers that in their branch of business, as in any other, an accurate account of expenditures and receipts must be kept, in order to determine where profits are made or losses occur. Simple methods of keeping these records, accounts, etc., within the scope of the average dairyman, have been presented and, in as many instances as possible, the forms and methods themselves have been used instead of descriptions of them. No attempt has been made to go into details of growing crops, as this is not the field of the book. The work will be found helpful to dairy students, and may be used as a text book or reference in dairy schools. The book has been written largely from the author's experience. He desires to acknowledge special obligations to Prof. Ivan C. Weld, U. S. Department of Agriculture, and Prof. William A. Book Synopsis Creating Dairyland by : Edward Janus
Download or read book Creating Dairyland written by Edward Janus and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of dairying in Wisconsin is the story of how our very landscape and way of life were created. By making cows the center of our farm life and learning how to care for them, our ancestors launched a revolution that changed much more than the way farmers earned their living — it changed us. In Creating Dairyland, journalist, oral historian, and former dairyman Ed Janus opens the pages of the fascinating story of Wisconsin dairy farming. He explores the profound idea that led to the remarkable "big bang" of dairying here a century and a half ago. He helps us understand why there are cows in Wisconsin, how farmers became responsible stewards of our resources, and how cows have paid them back for their efforts. And he introduces us to dairy farmers and cheesemakers of today: men and women who want to tell us why they love what they do. Ed Janus offers a sort of field guide to Dairyland, showing us how to "read" our landscape with fresh eyes, explaining what we see today by describing how and why it came to be. Creating Dairyland pays tribute to the many thousands of Wisconsin farmers who have found a way to stay on their land with their cows. Their remarkable effort of labor, intelligence, and faith is one of the great stories of Wisconsin.

Book Synopsis Blueprints for Tropical Dairy Farming by : John Moran
Download or read book Blueprints for Tropical Dairy Farming written by John Moran and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blueprints for Tropical Dairy Farming provides insight into the logistics, infrastructure and management required for the development of small and large dairy farms in tropical developing countries. Farmers will learn how to improve the welfare, milk quality and productivity of their dairy herds. This book complements author John Moran’s five previous books on the principles of tropical dairy farming. The manual covers a wide range of topics related to ensuring the sustainability of dairy production systems in tropical developing countries, such as South and East Asia, Africa and Central America. It also provides guidelines for the best management practices of large-scale, more intensive dairy systems. While smallholder farms are the major suppliers of milk in the tropics, many larger farms are becoming established throughout the tropics to satisfy the increasing demands for fresh milk. Blueprints for Tropical Dairy Farming will be a valuable resource for farmers and stockpeople who want to improve the productive performance of their dairy herds, farm advisers who can assist farmers to achieve this aim, educators who develop training programs for farmers or who train dairy advisers in the basics of dairy production technology, and other stakeholders in tropical dairy production, such as local agribusiness, policy makers and research scientists. National and international agencies will learn new insights into the required long-term logistics for regional dairy development, while potential investors will acquire knowledge into intensive tropical dairy farming.
