Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business and the Public Welfare Although men have talked of political economy and domestic economy for four or five generations, it is only recently that we have faced the really great practical problems of economy; and this is especially true in America. We have counted it our good fortune to dwell in a land where nature has been so prodigal that we have not needed to fear want. We are only beginning to realize that this very prodigality of nature has produced a spirit of prodigality in men. It is the purpose of the conservation movement to rebuke and correct this national trait, and the resources of science are now concentrated in a mighty effort in this direction. The im portance of conserving the food supply from our soils, as well as our supply of waters, minerals and wood, has, under the leadership of ex-president Roosevelt, taken a deep hold on the popular imagination. A beginning has thus been made in the movement to check the frightful wastes of production which have been disclosed. There is also an effort being made to eliminate the wastes of exchange through more scientific management. But im portant as are productive and business economics, still more important is what has recently been called vital economics. The conservation of human life will, I believe, constitute the grandest movement of the twentieth century. Book excerpt: This book points out that apart from usual “profit- maximizing business,”, there are some other types of business models which that serve social causes with profit. The author discusses some such business models, namely, social business, compassionate business, microfinance-based business, cooperative business, bottom- of- the- pyramid business, and social welfare business. The common point of all these business models is that they alleviate poverty and promote social development in a self-sustaining manner. The text identifies the main principles followed by these business models and suggests principles of benevolent business. Thus gives an idea about how to design a successful benevolent business. The author argues that along with the government and the NGOs, which are presently expected to meet the social developmental needs of the people, benevolent businesses should be promoted for fulfilling the social developmental needs. Such steps will endow social development and promote efficiency in meeting social developmental goals.

Book excerpt: How different would Americans’ lives be if they had guaranteed access to health care, generous public pensions, paid family leave, high-quality public pre-school care, increased rights at work, and a greater say in how corporations are run? This one-of-a-kind book emphasizes that differences in policies and institutions affect the lives of citizens by comparing health, pension, and family policies, as well as labor markets and corporate governance in the United States, Sweden, and Germany. Demonstrating that the US model of capitalism is not the only one that is viable, Bowman encourages students not only to rethink their assumptions about what policy alternatives are feasible, but also to learn more about American capitalism through insightful contrast. Covering a wide range of policy areas and written in a crisp, engaging style, Capitalisms Compared is a perfect companion for courses in political economy and public policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of today's political rhetoric decries the welfare state and our maze of government regulations. Critics hark back to a time before the state intervened so directly in citizens' lives. In The People's Welfare, William Novak refutes this vision of a stateless past by documenting America's long history of government regulation in the areas of public safety, political economy, public property, morality, and public health. Challenging the myth of American individualism, Novak recovers a distinctive nineteenth-century commitment to shared obligations and public duties in a well-regulated society. Novak explores the by-laws, ordinances, statutes, and common law restrictions that regulated almost every aspect of America's society and economy, including fire regulations, inspection and licensing rules, fair marketplace laws, the moral policing of prostitution and drunkenness, and health and sanitary codes. Based on a reading of more than one thousand court cases in addition to the leading legal and political texts of the nineteenth century, The People's Welfare demonstrates the deep roots of regulation in America and offers a startling reinterpretation of the history of American governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a systematic evaluation of the role played by business in the development of the modern welfare state. When and why have employers supported the development of institutions of social insurance that provide benefits to workers for various employment-related risks? What factors explain the variation in the social policy preferences of employers? What is the relative importance of business and labor-based organization in the negotiation of a new social policy? This book studies these critical questions, by examining the role played by German and French producers in eight social policy reforms spanning nearly a century of social policy development. The analysis demonstrates that major social policies were adopted by cross-class alliances comprising labor-based organizations and key sectors of the business community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest myth of modern times is the suggestion that capitalism and corporations do better with less government. The global economic crisis has certainly put paid to this idea. But the massive emergency state bailouts and interventions put in place from 2008 were unique only in their size and scale. Government programmes, designed to meet the needs of business, are not just everyday, they are everywhere and they are essential. Just as social welfare protects citizens from the cradle to the grave, corporate welfare protects and benefits corporations throughout their life course. And yet, in most countries, corporate welfare is hidden and underresearched. Drawing on comparative data from OECD states, this book seeks to shed light on the size, uses and importance of corporate welfareacross variouswelfare regimes.

This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the role of employers in the development of welfare state and labour market institutions. Building on an in-depth analysis of Germany, a market economy known to often provide economic benefits to firms, this book explores one of the most contested issues in the comparative and historical literature on the welfare state. In a departure from existing employer-centered explanations, the author applies new empirical data to contend that the variation in acceptance of social reform depends more on changes in the types of political challenges faced by employers, than on changes in the type of institutions considered economically beneficial. Covering major reforms spanning more than a century of institutional development in unemployment insurance, accident insurance, pensions, collective bargaining, and codetermination, this book argues that employers support social policy as a means to contain political outcomes that would have been worse, including labour unrest and more radical reform plans. Using new and controversial findings on the role of employers in welfare state development, this book considers the conditions for a peaceful coexistence of a generous welfare state and the business world. The Role of Business in the Development of the Welfare State and Labor Markets in Germany will be of interest to students and scholars of welfare and social policy politics, political economy and European politics.
