Book excerpt: This book addresses the Business Against Domestic Violence (BADV) project launched by the Corporate Governance Forum of Turkey (CGFT), a research center at Sabanci University School of Management. The goal of BADV is to mobilize companies to combat intimate partner violence (IPV) in Turkey. The project was realized in a collaborative partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with the support of Sabancı Foundation and in co-operation with Turkish Industrialists and Business Association (TUSIAD). The book is divided into two sections. Section 1, which focuses on the project itself, frames the elimination of IPV as an SDG target, and provides a detailed account of the project’s motivation, underlying research, project organization, implementation, and outcome. The question of why gender equality and IPV matter for business is also addressed. Lastly, the role of business schools and management scholars in creating practical and actionable knowledge to achieve development goals is discussed, based on the BADV experience. In turn, Section 2 explores the background of the project and sheds a multidisciplinary light on the local context. The main objective of the book is to encourage business schools and business organizations to form partnerships in pursuit of Goal-5 and other SDG targets, helping to create actionable knowledge and prompt social action. The book presents IPV from all relevant perspectives and focuses on Turkey, a key emerging economy and G-20 country.

These guidelines are an unprecedented effort to equip healthcare providers with evidence-based guidance as to how to respond to intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. They also provide advice for policy makers, encouraging better coordination and funding of services, and greater attention to responding to sexual violence and partner violence within training programmes for health care providers. The guidelines are based on systematic reviews of the evidence, and cover: 1. identification and clinical care for intimate partner violence 2. clinical care for sexual assault 3. training relating to intimate partner violence and sexual assault against women 4. policy and programmatic approaches to delivering services 5. mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence. It is the most common type of violence against women internationally and is estimated to affect 30 per cent of women worldwide. Intimate partner violence has received significant attention in recent years, animating political debate, policy and law reform as well as scholarly attention. In bringing together a range of international experts, this edited collection challenges status quo understandings of risk and questions how we can reposition the risk of IPV, and particularly the risk of IPH, as a critical site of global and national security. It brings together contributions from a range of disciplines and international jurisdictions, including from Australia and New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, United States, North America, Brazil and South Africa. The contributions here urge us to think about perpetrators in more nuanced and sophisticated ways with chapters pointing to the structural and social factors that facilitate and sustain violence against women and IPV. Contributors point out that states not only exacerbate the structural conditions producing the risks of violence, but directly coerce and control women as both citizens and non-citizens. States too should be understood as collaborators and facilitators of intimate partner violence. Book excerpt: We examine the impact of business cycle variation on intimate partner violence using representative data from thirty one developing countries, through 2005 to 2016. We distinguish male from female unemployment rates, identifying the influence of each conditional upon the other. We find that a one percent increase in the male unemployment rate increases the incidence of physical violence against women by 0.50 percentage points, or 2.75 percent. This is consistent with the financial and psychological stress generated by unemployment. Increases in female unemployment rates (corresponding to decreases in women's employment opportunities), conditional upon rates of male unemployment reduce the incidence of violence; a one percent increase being associated with a decrease in the probability of victimization of 0.52 percentage points, or 2.87 percent. This is consistent with 'male backlash'. These patterns of behaviour are stronger among better educated women and weaker among women who have had at least one son.

Book excerpt: Public service advertising can be a powerful and effective tool for awareness and education in helping both the public and specific target audiences learn more about urgent health issues. Given the recognition intimate partner violence has gained in the last two decades as an urgent health problem around the world, this issue was selected to explore advertising's effect and potential to help a specific target audience. This research examined female survivors' impressions of domestic violence campaigns. A sample of 16 focus groups of approximately six women in two-hour sessions were conducted, at two different points in time over the past two decades. These focus groups included a fairly equal number of African-American, White, Asian, and Latino women in two different geographic areas of the country. Participants were asked to describe their opinions about a sampling of current domestic violence campaign material. The women who participated expressed heightened negative emotional responses to specific elements of some of the advertising, suggesting the potential of some campaigns to exacerbate the problem for this target group. The purpose of this research was to formulate a base of information to create improved public service advertising for this segment of the public, as they are the group most severely affected by this issue. Thus, based on the Editor's research and the participants' responses, the key goal for an improved campaign should be enhancing early identification, empowerment, and help-seeking behaviour.
