Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. V. Gillum had a fascinating story of his life that he wanted to record as a part of his family ́s genealogy to pass along to future descendants. As a child growing up in a coal-mining region of Kentucky during the Great Depression of the late 1920 ́s to the mid 1930 ́s, he experienced poverty and hardships that few people of later generations could even imagine. As teenager during WW II, he joined the Navy and served as Quartermaster aboard the USS LSM 36. He participated in invasions of Japanese held islands in the Pacific, witnessing the danger and terror of the Japanese Kamikaze suicide planes. Like millions of other young Americans, he returned home to an America where very few job were available. Armed with only a 9th grade education, he later became a department executive for Rockwell, and worked on the Apollo Moon Landing Project, and later the Space Shuttle Project. Through his hobbies, he coached Little League Baseball and became a mentor to many young children. He is also a gifted poet. His life ́s story is so typical of average Americans whom, in their own way, large or small, contributed to making America the great nation that it is today. The citizens of this country who suffered through the Great Depression, followed by WW II, have been described by many as "America ́s Greatest Generation." D. V. Gillum certainly qualifies as a member of this elite group. T. D. Burns

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “outstanding contribution to transportation history” chronicles the evolution of American mobility from stagecoaches to buses and airplanes (Choice). Transportation is the unsung hero of American history. Stagecoaches, waterways, canals, railways, busses, and airplanes revolutionized much more than just the way people got around; they transformed the economic, political, and social aspects of everyday life. In Transportation and the American People, renowned historian H. Roger Grant tells the story of American transportation from its slow, uncomfortable, and often dangerous beginnings to the speed and comfort of travel today. Early advances like stagecoaches and canals allowed traders, businesses, and industries to expand across the nation, setting the stage for modern developments like transcontinental railways and busses that would forever reshape the continent. Grant provides a compelling and thoroughly researched narrative of the social history of travel, shining a light on the role transportation played in shaping the country as well as the people who helped build it.

Book excerpt: At the end of World War II in Europe (1939-1945), the three victorious allies, namely the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union signed the Potsdam Agreement (Polish: Traktat Posdamski – German: Potsdamer Abkommen) in the month of August 1945. This followed the defeat and surrender of the German Army. 1 - The Agreement, amongst other things, dealt mainly with the military occupation and reconstruction of Germany, its demilitarization, reparations, its borders, as well as setting borders of other neighbouring countries involved in the war, including the borders of People’s Republic of Poland, USSR and Germany itself. On top of that the Agreement also dealt with the prosecution of war criminals. The treaty was signed by President Harry S. Truman, Prime Minister Clement Attlee and General Secretary Joseph V. Stalin. 2 - The three powers also jointly agreed to invite France and People’s Republic of China to participate in the Council of Foreign Ministers established and assigned with the task to oversee the Agreement.

Book excerpt: In 1976 in Chowchilla, California, three men kidnapped twenty-six children and their driver from a school bus, drove them a hundred miles away to a rock quarry, forced them into a moving van, and then buried them alive. Miraculously, many hours later, two older children dug themselves out, helping everyone escape to freedom. Six-year-old Larry Park was one of those victims, and this is his story. Larry survived this horrific ordeal, but he's never been the same. He's spent nearly four decades battling mental illness, severe anxiety, drug addiction, and rage issues. He was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder and has even contemplated suicide. But in this poignantly honest memoir, Park shares his tale in the hope of finally slaying his demons and putting his past to rest. Will Larry quell the voices in his head and the rage in his heart? Will he channel his hard-won knowledge into helping himself and millions of others suffering in the aftermath of trauma? And most importantly, will Larry make his peace with God? Dive into one incredible true-life story behind the Chowchilla kidnapping, and revel in the tenacity of the human spirit in the face of the evil of this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story with a big heart about a boy, a coach, the game of baseball, and the game of life. "There are teachers with a rare ability to enter a child's mind; it's as if their ability to get there at all gives them the right to stay forever." There was a turning point in Michael Lewis's life, in a baseball game when he was fourteen years old. The irascible and often terrifying Coach Fitz put the ball in his hand with the game on the line and managed to convey such confident trust in Lewis's ability that the boy had no choice but to live up to it. "I didn't have words for it then, but I do now: I am about to show the world, and myself, what I can do." The coach's message was not simply about winning but about self-respect, sacrifice, courage, and endurance. In some ways, and now thirty years later, Lewis still finds himself trying to measure up to what Coach Fitz expected of him.

Book excerpt: In Along the No. 20 Line, Rolf Knight takes the reader on a tour through working-class East Vancouver of a century ago. Knight's "through-line" is literally a line: the old No. 20 streetcar route that ran between downtown Vancouver and the present-day neighbourhood of the Pacific National Exhibition. From 1892 to 1949, when it was shut down and replaced by the No. 20 Granville / Victoria Drive bus, the No. 20 streetcar carried thousands of Vancouverites back and forth between their East Van homes and their jobs on the docks, and in the mills, factories, and workshops along the No. 20 line. Knight's own recollections of growing up in an the East Vancouver waterfront squatter's community near the Ironworkers Bridge, and interviews with East Vancouver old-timers, bring the city and the era to life. A Vancouver Legacy 125 title, Along the No. 20 Line has become a classic of local history since it was originally published in 1980. Now in a new, larger format, this edition features a new Afterword by Rolf Knight, as well as ten new photos and new route maps.
