It's hard enough to work as a private investigator without potential clients standing you up. Of course, it's difficult to show up when you're dead. A revered community figure in the Oregon coast town of Barnacle Bluffs, the teacher extraordinaire never gets a chance to explain why she wants to hire Garrison Gage before her body turns up in a sandy grave. Seldom deterred by the lack of a client, Gage barrels forward intent on discovering the woman's killer. Unfortunately, the professional curmudgeon stirs up a lot more trouble than he expects, putting innocent people in imminent danger. In the past, Gage always triumphed over whatever dark forces stood in his way, but this time he may have gone too far — and he won't be the only one paying the price.

Book excerpt: Playing off today’s headlines, Burying the Dead serves up a high stakes game of love and death set on the power courts of Washington, DC, and other glittering world capitals. There Dimitri “Dimi” Orlov is a rising Russian tennis star whose glamorous, globetrotting career provides the perfect cover for his real day job -- agent and assassin. Trained by his government from the time he’s discovered in an orphanage, Dimi is assigned to assassinate the president of the United States -- a brilliant but arrogant onetime New York prosecutor who’s proved too independent for his Russian backers -- by romancing and enlisting his abused first lady, Catherine Darlington. Dimi courts the lovely, loveless Catherine at Renaissance House, a new cultural center in historic Dupont Circle that’s a front for Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), and at the US Open. There he’s shadowed by CIA agent Mitch Abramson, who has begun to connect the dots. But just as the various matches – Dimi and Catherine, Dimi and Mitch -- heat up, Dimi makes a choice that could have his bosses take him out of the game permanently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Book II – SONS OF CUBA – HOMECOMING Felipe and his handful of rebels are forced into exile by the Batista government. With the help of Ileana Calleri, a Cuban National living in Mexico, a training camp is established in the shadows of the snowcapped volcano Popocatépetal near Mexico City. The revolution is expensive and securing funds to finance the rebellion is slow and demanding. Felipe returns to the United States in hopes he can convince fellow Cuban patriots and others to support their cause. But, while seeking financial assistance, he barely survives an attempt on his life. Nothing seems to impede Felipe and his band of compatriots from their quest. Even though a plane crash diminishes their numbers, the rebels succeed returning home and establish their base camp in the mountains of southeastern Cuba. High in the Sierra Maestra Mountains, near Pico Turquino, Felipe encounters a feisty peasant girl, Tangi Montolio. This fiery red-headed activist is one of the rebel leader’s most passionate supporters. She will deliver the long awaited message to Cardena’s encampment affirming victory is on the horizon. Lazario Montolio is a loyal courier for the Cuban revolutionaries. He is a widower and Tangi is his only child. He endeavors to keep his strong-willed daughter from direct contact with the rugged revolutionaries whenever he can. However, the long awaited message affirming victory is imminent must reach the rebels high in their mountain campground. Lazario and Tangi are among the few that are trusted by the rebels. When Lazario is unable to personally make the delivery, he has no choice but to send his daughter. After Tangi’s encounter with the rebels, a set of circumstances compel her to become estranged from her father, Lazario Montolio and her fiancé, Ramon Miguel Hernandez. Homeless and with no money, Tangi is rescued by an old farmer, Fernando Reyes. He takes Tangi under his wing and gives her a job and a home. She becomes the child he never knew. Ramon Miguel Hernandez, the fiancé, refuses to accept that Tangi’s disappearance was without just cause and searches until he finds her. When they are finally reunited in Havana, their short-lived happiness is besieged with uncertainty and despair. While Tangi is managing the fruit and vegetable kiosk in Plaza de San Francisco, her three year old son, Andrés, disappears. The frantic family search everywhere. Moments later the boy returns in the arms of Rafaella Zamá, the Santería priestess. What could possibly be Rafaella's motives? Distrust, deterioration of civility and harassment from Cuban soldiers force Tangi and her family to consider returning to their home in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. Before they can move forward with their plans, government troops intervene. From this day forward the family’s lives catapults into turmoil. Imprisonment, death and the treacherous crossing of the Gulf of Mexico shapes their future. The one bright spot on the horizon awaiting the refugees is Cristóbal and Teresa Marín - the parents of Felipe’s dead bride, Margarít. From exile this couple relishes the opportunity to seek revenge on Cuba’s new dictator, Felipe Cardena - the same man who was responsible for the death of the Marín children, Margarít and Alejandro - the destruction of the Marín family legacy - and the reason they were forced to leave Cuba. Will Andrés, Tangi’s only son, become Cuba’s new hope?

Book Synopsis Into the Great Emptiness: Peril and Survival on the Greenland Ice Cap by : David Roberts
Download or read book Into the Great Emptiness: Peril and Survival on the Greenland Ice Cap written by David Roberts and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riveting story of one of the greatest but least-known sagas in the history of exploration from David Roberts, the “dean of adventure writing.” By 1930, no place in the world was less well explored than Greenland. The native Inuit had occupied the relatively accessible west coast for centuries. The east coast, however, was another story. In August 1930, Henry George Watkins (nicknamed “Gino”), a twenty-three-year-old British explorer, led thirteen scientists and explorers on an ambitious expedition to the east coast of Greenland and into its vast and forbidding interior to set up a permanent meteorological base on the icecap, 8,200 feet above sea level. The Ice Cap Station was to be the anchor of a transpolar route of air travel from Europe to North America. The weather on the ice cap was appalling. Fierce storms. Temperatures plunging lower than –50° Fahrenheit in the winter. Watkins’s scheme called for rotating teams of two men each to monitor the station for two months at a time. No one had ever tried to winter over in that hostile landscape, let alone manage a weather station through twelve continuous months. Watkins was younger than anyone under his command. But he had several daring trips to the Arctic under his belt and no one doubted his judgement. The first crisis came in the fall when a snowstorm stranded a resupply mission halfway to the top for many weeks. When they arrived at the ice cap, there were not enough provisions and fuel for another two-man shift, so the station would have to be abandoned. Then team member August Courtauld made an astonishing offer. To enable the mission to go forward, he would monitor the station solo through the winter. When a team went up in March to relieve Courtauld, after weeks of brutal effort to make the 130-mile journey, they could find no trace of him or the station. By the end of March, Courtauld’s situation was desperate. He was buried under an immovable load of frozen snow and was disastrously short on supplies. On April 21, four months after Courtauld began his solitary vigil, Gino Watkins set out inland with two companions to find and rescue him. David Roberts, “veteran mountain climber and chronicler of adventures” (Washington Post), draws on firsthand accounts and archival materials to tell the story of this daring expedition and of the epic survival ordeal that ensued.

Book Synopsis Nicole Laurent by : Elizabeth Baroody
Download or read book Nicole Laurent written by Elizabeth Baroody and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicole Longet never knew her father. She was born in Paris, France, living with her mother and grandmother until she received a scholarship to study in the United States. After graduation, she returns to France and meets and marries Rene Laurent, the owner of a jewelry store who designs and makes his own creations. Nicole, besides working in the store, also delivers the jewelry to customers in many countries. She comes to the attention of a US government agency that is always searching for investigators and agents. Nicole is followed, tested several times, and accepted into the world of spies and secret agents. After a year or two of training and aiding other agents, she was assigned the job of capturing or eliminating a rogue agent in St. Augustine, Florida, who had killed one agent and was trying to kill Emmalou Shallotte, a smitten teenager, because he believed she deceived him. Her next job was to rescue a small six-year-old boy held in an embassy in Washington that she knew from one of her deliveries. Other assignments included the protection of a gypsy woman, Tanya, from her children on a trip from Washington to South Carolina by way of Pennsylvania. Throughout these stories and others are the recurring themes of her work for Rene Laurent, the death of her grandmother, the bequeathing of the brass-bound trunk, the divorcing from Rene, and the romantic start of a new love. The search for her father enters a new stage with the opening of the Grandmothers trunk containing information about a circus performer who might be a thief on the side and who just might be her father. The search continues through the mystery at the Hemphill plantation and the stalking of Jean Ducharme at Randolph College in Virginia. Her trials and tribulations with Carlo, another agent, and finally her trip with Derek the dwarf to Florida to find her father complete this interesting and compelling tale.
