Their story is told here by some of the scientists who participated in their discovery and, after many decades of false starts, solved the problem of their origin. Fourteen chapters by active researchers in the field present a detailed history of the discovery, a comprehensive theoretical description of GRB central engine and emission models, a discussion of GRB host galaxies and a guide to how GRBs can be used as cosmological tools. Observations are grouped into three sets from the satellites CGRO, BeppoSAX and Swift, and followed by a discussion of multi-wavelength observations. This is the first edited volume on GRB astrophysics that presents a fully comprehensive review of the subject. Utilizing the latest research, Gamma-ray Bursts is an essential desktop companion for graduate students and researchers in astrophysics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous explosions in the universe, which within seconds release energy comparable to what the Sun releases in its entire lifetime. The field of GRBs has developed rapidly and matured over the past decades. Written by a leading researcher, this text presents a thorough treatment of every aspect of the physics of GRBs. It starts with an overview of the field and an introduction to GRB phenomenology. After laying out the basics of relativity, relativistic shocks, and leptonic and hadronic radiation processes, the volume covers all topics related to GRBs, including a general theoretical framework, afterglow and prompt emission models, progenitor, central engine, multi-messenger aspects (cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gravitational waves), cosmological connections, and broader impacts on fundamental physics and astrobiology. It is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and experienced researchers in the field of GRBs and high-energy astrophysics in general.

Book excerpt: The study of the fine structure of solar radio emissions is key to understanding plasma processes in the solar corona. It remains a reliable means for both diagnosing the corona and verifying the results of laboratory plasma experiments on wave-wave and wave-particle interactions. This monograph provides a comprehensive review of the fine structure of solar radio bursts. Based on the diversity of experimental data resulting from the progress made in observational techniques, the validity of various theoretical models is reexamined. The book serves as an up-to-date reference work for all researchers in this field.

Book excerpt: We have reexamined the relationship between U-shaped peak-flux-density microwave spectra and solar proton events for approx 200 large (Sp(> or = 2GHz) > or = 800 solar flux uits (sfu) microwave burst (1965 - 1979). The radio spectra fell into two basic classes: (a) U-shaped with two maxima ( > or = 800 sfu) in the range from 200 MHz to > or = 10 GHz (59 percent of all events), and (b) cutoff spectra with a maximum > or = 800 sfu at f > or = 2 GHz and Sp (200 MHz) 100 sfu (18 percent). Nine percent of the events had intermediate spectra with a maximum or = 800 sfu at f > or = 2 GHz and 100 sfu or = Sp (200 MHz) 800 sfu. We were unable to classify 15 percent of the events because of incomplete data. The associations of the three classes of spectra with Type II (and/or Type IV) meter wavelenght bursts and 10 MeV proton events of any size ( or = 0.01 pr per sq cm per sec per sr) are as follows: U-shaped Type II/IV (90 percent of large microwave bursts with U-shaped spectra are associated with Type II/IV events), protons (77 percent); intermediate Type II/IV (78 percent), protons (73 percent); and cutoff Type II/IV (22 percent), protons (33 percent). These statistics affirm various lines of evidence linking coronal shock waves and interplanetary proton events. They also suggest that the meter wavelength branch of the U-shaped spectrum may be attributable to second phase (vs flash phase) accelerated electrons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last thirty years, gamma-ray bursts have grown from an oddity to a central position in astrophysics. Not only are they the largest explosions since the big bang, capable of flooding most of the universe with gamma-rays, but their brilliance serves as a backlight that can illuminate the cosmos far deeper into the early universe than any other object. Their unpredictability has forced researchers to use extreme measures to observe them: completely autonomous satellites and robotic ground-based telescopes. Their bizarre physical properties have pushed us to develop new theories of astrophysical explosions. Topics include: global properties of GRBs; X-ray flashes; ultra-high energy gamma-rays, neutrinos, gravity waves; prompt emission and early afterglows; relativistic jets and polarization; GRB030329; GRB progenitors; GRB connection to supernovae; dark versus bright GRBs; late afterglows; GRBs and cosmology; general observations; general theory; analysis and observation techniques; present satellites; Swift satellite; future satellites; and robotic observing systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 18 contains literature published in 1976 and received before March 1, 1977; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.
