Book excerpt: The predictions of pipeline burst pressure in the early stage are very importance in order to provide assessment for future inspection and maintenances activities. The failures of pipelines contribute to economic implications, fatal injuries and also constitute serious hazards to the environment due to leakage. This project is a study on interaction effect of the distance between cracks for material grade B steel pipe using finite element analysis (FEA). The objectives for this project are to study the interaction of two linear cracks and analyze the maximum pressure defect for various distances between crack and crack length. This project include the analysis of the material grade B steel by using MSC Patran 2008 r1 software as pre-processor and MSC Marc 2008 r1 software as a solver. This analysis investigates one failure criterions that is von Mises stress as to predict the failure of defective pipe. Half of pipe was simulated by applying the symmetrical condition. The pipe is modeled in 3D with outer diameter of 60.5 mm, wall thickness of 4 mm and different defect parameters. Result shows that the maximum pressure increases when the distance between cracks increase and the crack length decrease. The results have been compared to available design codes for corroded pipelines such as ASME B31G, Modified ASME B31G and DNV RP F101. The comparison with design codes have shown that FEA burst pressure gives higher values.

Plane-strain analyses of a tubular structure containing longitudinal cracks with varying crack depth to thickness ratios (a/t) are employed to characterize crack-tip constraint for cracked pipes under internal pressure. Laboratory testing of an API 5L X70 steel at room temperature using standard, deep crack C(T) specimens provides the crack growth resistance curve to calibrate the micromechanics cell parameters for the material. The cell model incorporating the calibrated material-specific parameters is then applied to predict the burst pressure of a thin-walled gas pipeline containing longitudinal cracks with varying crack depth to thickness ratios (a/t). The numerical analyses demonstrate the capability of the computational cell approach to simulate ductile crack growth in fracture specimens and to predict the burst pressure of thin-walled tubular structures containing crack-like defects.

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth data sets, for pressure vessel and piping steels, in reactor-grade water environment have appeared in various reports and publications since about 1972. All of the results which have been published from 1972 through 1979 have been plotted and are presented in this report. Beginning with a discussion of the need for these data, and an explanation of the laboratory facilities which are required for this research, this report goes on to describe the overall trends which have evolved through consideration of the data sets and the conditions under which they were generated. A model for hydrogen assisted fatigue crack growth is described and applied to the pressurized water reactor type of environment. A complete listing of references is included in the report. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with assessment of defective API 5L X65 steel pipes which are widely used in product transportation in oil and gas industry. The objective of the thesis is to determine the burst pressure of defective API X65 steel pipes under the effect of gouge length for different pipe diameter. The thesis describes the finite element analysis techniques to predict the true fracture and identify the critical locations of the structures (pipe). One-quarter three-dimensional solid modelling of steel pipe was developed using the MSC Patran 2008r1 that act as a pre-processor. The finite element analysis was then performed using MSC Marc. The finite element model of the pipe was analyzed using the non-linear isotropic elasto-plastic material that obeys the incremental of plastic theory. The values of principal stresses and strains acted on the critical location of gouge defect had been obtained by MSC Patran as a post-processor. The values were used to determine the true fracture strain which is known to be exponentially dependent to the stress triaxiality. Finally, burst pressure was determined as the true fracture strain exceeds the value of equivalent strain at that instant point. Based on the results, it is observed that the analysis using SMCS model yields more conservative burst pressure prediction. The obtained results indicate that the shorter gouge length would gives higher burst pressure which means, higher pressure needed as the pipe to experience failure at the gouge defect area. Result shows that the burst pressure decreases with increment of pipe diameter. The results concluded that the shorter gouge length and smaller pipe diameter conditions give the highest pressure value of pipe burst. Therefore, the defect characteristic is the promising criteria to increase the fitness of service of the pipe.

Book excerpt: Failures due to the multiple cracks become a major concern in the pipeline industry and also in maintaining the pipeline integrity. The predictions of pipeline burst pressure in the early stage are very important in order to provide assessment for future inspection. The effects of the multiple aligned axial cracks on burst pressure of material Grade B was studied through an experimental and numerical simulation. The objectives of this research are to investigate the effects of multiple aligned axial cracks towards the burst pressure. This research focuses on two types of analysis which is experimental and simulations by using material Grade B pipe with outer diameter of 60.5mm, 600mm in length and thickness of 4mm. The burst test is done by applying internal pressure of hydraulic oil continuously at the pipe with artificially machined cracks until the pipe burst. MSC Marc Patran 2008r1 is used as a pre-processor and a solver in the analysis of material Grade B. A half of the pipe was modeled by considering the symmetrical conditions using the same parameter with a pipe that used in the burst test. In both analyses of experiment and simulation, the stress and strain are used as criteria for predicting the failure of the pipe. The result shows that as the length of the cracks increase, the burst pressure is decreased. The assessment method in predicting the burst pressure such as ASME B31G, Modified ASME B31G and DNV-RP-F-101 used as the comparison with the result taken from the analysis.

Book excerpt: This projects explains the methods used in predicting the failure pressure of defective pipelines. The failure pressure of defective was estimated for the pipe with the different types of defects. APIX42 steel is chosen for this studies and it must undergoes few machining steps to design a tensile test specimen according to ASTM E8-08M-11. Data obtained from tension test (engineering stress strain) must convert into true stress strain in order to transfer it during simulation (field). Power law is the formula used to convert engineering stress strain to true stress strain. Ultimate strength of APIX42 is predicted at 612 MPa. For modelling part, one quarter of pipeline geometry need to design in MSCPatran software. This study is only focussed on single type of defect. Meshing (element) steps continues after one quarter of geometry is designed. Modelling and simulation is repeated for the different depth (25%, 50% and 75%) of defects and increment in pre-strain. Result obtained after the simulation process must be interpolated to get more accurate failure pressure. Predicted failure pressure is higher for pipeline without presence of pre-strain. Pipeline with the presence of pre-strain, predicted failure pressure is reducing as the amount of pre-strain applied is increases. Three industry models are compared with the finite element result (FEA) for validation. For the lower depth, FEA failure prediction is the highest followed by DNV-RP-F101. ASME B31G and Modified B31G predicted almost same failure pressure but less than FEA and DNV-RPF101. When the depth increases, DVN-RP-F101 predicted higher value of burst pressure compared to FEA. Whereas Modified B31G and ASME B31G predicted lower failure pressure but getting closer to FEA and DVN-RP-F101. The same phenomena happened when various amount of pre-strain (1kN, 3kN and 5kN) applied, but predicted failure pressure is lower than without pre-strain. By referring to the result, presence of pre-strain is really effected value of failure pressure. Increase in pre-strain will cause losing balance strength in pipelines and leads failure in short time compare to pipelines without pre-strain.

Book excerpt: This project was performed to propose ductile failure criteria as a function of the stress triaxiality for the API X42 steel pipes. The objective of this project is to determine the burst pressure of modeled pipe using strain based failure criteria. In this project, uniaxial tension test was performed using three types of specimen. The specimen extracted from API X42 5L steel pipe. The steel pipe was machined to desired dimension and obeys the international standard of ASTM-E8 specimen. Three type of specimen which is smooth, notch radius 1.5 mm, 3 mm and 6 mm prepared and undergoes uniaxial tension test. The engineering stress-stress data retrieved from the test converted to the true stress-strain curve. The true stress-strain data become as an input data to the simulation analysis. Initial and final diameter of specimen was taken to calculate the strain fracture of the pipe. Stress modified critical strain criteria were proposed by using the strain fracture. The findings of the main parameter which is burst pressure predictions precede by using FEA software. Finite Element analysis was performed by using MSC Patran/Marc 2008r1 software. In MSC Patran, the API X 42 steel pipes was modeled. Burst pressure predicted compared to the available industrial pipe design assessment in order to validate the obtained results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book on the fracture mechanics of concrete focuses on the latest developments in computational theories, and how to apply those theories to solve real engineering problems. Zihai Shi uses his extensive research experience to present detailed examination of multiple-crack analysis and mixed-mode fracture.Compared with other mature engineering disciplines, fracture mechanics of concrete is still a developing field with extensive new research and development. In recent years many different models and applications have been proposed for crack analysis; the author assesses these in turn, identifying their limitations and offering a detailed treatment of those which have been proved to be robust by comprehensive use. After introducing stress singularity in numerical modelling and some basic modelling techniques, the Extended Fictitious Crack Model (EFCM) for multiple-crack analysis is explained with numerical application examples. This theoretical model is then applied to study two important issues in fracture mechanics - crack interaction and localization, and fracture modes and maximum loads. The EFCM is then reformulated to include the shear transfer mechanism on crack surfaces and the method is used to study experimental problems. With a carefully balanced mixture of theory, experiment and application, Crack Analysis in Structural Concrete is an important contribution to this fast-developing field of structural analysis in concrete. Latest theoretical models analysed and tested Detailed assessment of multiple crack analysis and multi-mode fractures Applications designed for solving real-life engineering problems

Book excerpt: Fatigue of the pressurized fuselages of transport aircraft is a significant problem all builders and users of aircraft have to cope with for reasons associated with assuring a sufficient lifetime and safety, and formulating adequate inspection procedures. These aspects are all addressed in various formal protocols for creating and maintaining airworthiness, including damage tolerance considerations. In most transport aircraft, fatigue occurs in lap joints, sometimes leading to circumstances that threaten safety in critical ways. The problem of fatigue of lap joints has been considerably enlarged by the goal of extending aircraft lifetimes. Fatigue of riveted lap joints between aluminium alloy sheets, typical of the pressurized aircraft fuselage, is the major topic of the present book. The richly illustrated and well-structured chapters treat subjects such as: structural design solutions and loading conditions for fuselage skin joints; relevance of laboratory test results for simple lap joint specimens to riveted joints in a real structure; effect of various production and design related variables on the riveted joint fatigue behaviour; analytical and experimental results on load transmission in mechanically fastened lap joints; theoretical and experimental analysis of secondary bending and its implications for riveted joint fatigue performance; nucleation and shape development of fatigue cracks in riveted longitudinal lap joints; overview of experimental investigations into the multi-site damage for full scale fuselage panels and riveted lap joint specimens; fatigue crack growth and fatigue life prediction methodology for riveted lap joints; residual strength predictions for riveted lap joints in a fuselage structure. The major issues of each chapter are recapitulated in the last section.
