One of four treatments were randomly assigned to Twelve pastures: 1) BG; 2) IG; 3) Mix G; 4) Mix NG. Growing steers (n = 225) were randomly assigned to one of nine pastures. Grass samples were taken from all pastures every 28 days during a four-month period and were analyzed for nutrient composition. Bermudagrass pastures had greater crude protein and ADF, but less NDF concentrations compared with the native warm-season grasses. Crude protein, IVDMD, and NDF IVDMD concentration decreased while NDF, ADF, and Hemicellulose concentration increased as grasses matured. Steers grazing IG and Mix G pastures gained more weight and consumed more forage than those on BG pastures. It appears that native warm-season grasses may offer a viable alternative to BG for grazing cattle during the summer.

Book excerpt: Results of these experiments indicate that urea can be the main source of rumen-degradable protein for cow-calf pairs grazing stockpiled limpograss pastures. In addition, creep-feeding calves with soybean meal may be an effective management practice to increase calf body weight and weaning weights. There is an increasing interest in \U+2018\Jiggs\U+2019\ bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] for grazing systems in Florida; however, there is limited information about grazing management of Jiggs. Research was conducted to test the effect of stocking rates [SR; 4, 9, and 13 animal units (450 kg liveweight) ha-1] on animal performance and herbage characteristics of Jiggs pastures. There was a linear decrease in herbage mass, forage height, and herbage allowance with increasing stocking rate. Animal performance and ground cover decreased with increasing stocking rate. Jiggs is a useful warm-season perennial grass to be grazed in South Florida; however, grazing at shorter stubble heights must be avoided due to negative effects on animal performance and forage persistence.

Book excerpt: Including native warm-season grasses in pasture systems makes good ecological sense, and this publication explores the benefits and challenges associated with their use. The uneven seasonal distribution of forage production from introduced cool-season species is a primary factor complicating pasture management, while native plant communities are more efficient at capturing solar radiation.

This comprehensive reference assists individuals with limited botanical knowledge as well as natural resource professionals in identifying wildland plants. The two hundred species of wildland plants in this book were selected because of their abundance, desirability, or poisonous properties. Each illustration has been enhanced with labels pointing to key characteristics to facilitate the identification of unknown plants. Each plant description includes plant characteristics, an illustration of the plant with enlarged parts, and a general distribution map for North America. Each species description includes nomenclature; life span; origin; season of growth; inflorescence, flower or spikelet, or other reproductive parts; vegetative parts; and growth characteristics. Brief notes are included on habitat; livestock losses; and historic, food, and medicinal uses. This third edition contains additional refinements in the nomenclature, distribution, illustrations, and descriptions of plants.
