C., 1909-1910, Vol. 1: Containing a General and a Classified Business Directory of the Above Places, a Street Guide of Burlington and Graham an Much Useful Miscellaneous Information Burlington is the chief town of Alamance county. It is situated in the center of the county. It is 21 miles east of Greensboro and 50 miles from Raleigh, the State capital; and on the main line of the Southern Railroad from Greensboro to Goldsboro. We have a population of 6,000, with an immediate population of 5, 000 more. It is surrounded by small towns and mill villages as follows: Hopedale, Carolina, Glencoe, Alamance, and Osceola, thriving little towns in which are located large cotton mills employing hundreds of hands, Burlington being the trading center and post office for same. We have an active little city with every part of it throbbing and vibrating with industrial and commercial development. Graded Schools, churches, private schools, newspapers, telegraph and telephone lines, electric lights, railroads, and within a few months, street car lines (the survey has been completed and construction begun), and these keep us in line of modern progress. Ours is mainly an industrial city. We have five large cotton mills with 50,000 spindles and 2,000 looms, employing 2,500 people; we have three knitting mills which employ over 300 people; we have one of the largest overall and shirt factories in the South employing hundreds of skilled workmen; we have a steel bridge plant covering an area of thousands of feet and working hundreds of skilled men; several enormous wood working plants which consume millions of feet of lumber per week; large machine shops and foundries; an extensive plant for the manufacture of coffins and caskets; large roller flouring mills; strong financial institutions; building and loan company; insurance, loan and real estate companies; wholesale stores, and large retail dry goods, clothing, hardware and implement dealers; drug stores, sewing machine and music stores; in full, the departments of commerce are represented fully in our town. The total value of real and personal property in the city of Burlington is about $3,000,000.00. This rate is, for general city purposes, 40 cents on the $100: and 30 cents on the $100 for school purposes. We have a large and excellent electric light plant owned and operated by the city; we have water works and a good fire department, thus giving us efficient fire protection. Our people are a working people and you never see any idle persons, no matter what their financial standing may be. The living expenses in Burlington, as in the whole country, are very low. Book Synopsis The Captives of Abb's Valley by : James Moore
Download or read book The Captives of Abb's Valley written by James Moore and published by . This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tragedy of Virginian colonial frontier In the summer of 1786 a large war party of Shawnee Indians entered Abb's Valley, Virginia, and descended on the household of militia officer Captain John Moore which included members of his immediate family together with hired labourers. The family occupied a substantial log building and were well armed, so Moore believed that his family was well placed to fight off a small Indian attack. The nearest homestead was six miles away and Moore, relying on his own abilities, thought it unnecessary to follow the example of neighbours by taking refuge in the nearest fort. The attack achieved complete surprise and Moore was killed before he could reach the safety of the house. What followed was an appalling, but typical, Indian massacre of the colonial period frontier in the 18th century. Various family members, young and old, were slaughtered on the spot, the property was set alight and a substantial herd of livestock was taken. Surviving members of the Moore family were taken as captives to the Indian townships, several of them being murdered on the journey. Once the survivors reached the Indian village there followed another period of torture which for Mrs. Moore and a teenage daughter proved fatal. Two young women survived their ordeals to eventually be ransomed. The story of this notable frontier tragedy was written by James Moore, a son of Mary Moore, who was one of the two ransomed captives. This a vital account of the struggles endured by the early settlers of the American wilderness and will be of essential interest to anyone interested in the early history of the state of Virginia.
