Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burlesque If the principle which should guide the editor of the Treasure-Trove Series has been followed, as I think it has, the result will be a series of readable little volumes, which one may take up at odd intervals with the certainty of finding some things, I would fain hope many things, in which he cannot fail to be interested. He should look, in the first place, for amusement; in the second place, for variety: if he finds these qualities here, he has something to be thankful for. He has to be thankful, at any rate, for the labor which the compiler has expended for him, - labor which is not to be measured by what is accepted so much as by what is rejected, the reading of many books to no end. If the best books are those which are not written, as a cynical critic would have us believe, the worst books are certainly in the same category, "a happy thought," as a great living philosopher would have us believe, which is not without its compensations. Not to dwell, however, upon these literary possibilities, which we can well spare, so numberless are the books on all sorts of subjects which every day brings forth, let us turn for a moment to the papers which follow. We have first, from the pen of England's greatest humorist, a serio-comic protest against an individual with whom we in America arc tolerably familiar. I refer to that rampant and irrepressible myth "the noble savage." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Garden Wall: A Musical Burlesque in One Act Scene. - The garden wall. Branches of willow or evergreen at sides and back of wall. At rise of curtain the prelude to the song "Over the Garden Wall" is played by the pianist. Reginald De Jones appears back of wall in centre. Reginald. Ladies, gentlemen and all fellow-citizens assembled before me to-night, - I take great pleasure in introducing to your notice the greatest travelling aggregation of the day. It has taken years of labor to form this gigantic company of "Stars," and there has never been seen such an array of beauty, grace and talent combined as you will find in this company. It is very seldom that we ever play in a town of this size, but last week when we were playing in Blueberry Corners, or name of some village near by) we located this town on the map and decided to make it our next stand, provided we could get a sufficient guarantee from the management of this house. We are the only company on the road travelling on what is now the popular mode of locomotion - namely, the "byke"; and could you see us when we start out you would discover that we all wear bloomers. Now, I am the manager, proprietor and bill-poster of this organization, and my wife, Evangeline, is the treasurer. I wanted that office myself; but as she furnished the money to start us out, she insists on handling all the cash. She also has full charge of the programme; and if you will give us your kind attention we will now proceed. (Calls, L.) Evangeline, my love! Evangeline (outside, L.). Yes, Reginald, my dear. Reginald. You may appear in front of the wall. [Evangeline Enters, L. This fair creature, ladies and gentlemen, is considered by the press and the public to be the most beautiful woman before the American footlights to-day. (To her.) Evangeline, my love, salute the ladies and gentlemen, especially the gentlemen. [She bows two or three times. Now, you may proceed with the programme while I go out and look after the proceeds of the box office. [Exit down behind the wall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from J. Caesar: A Burlesque At the opening of "J. Caesar," the curtain rises and shows an empty stage with a plain background. All the scenery is brought on and removed, in full view of the audience, by two husky and muscular stage hands. The titles of the scenes are printed on large sheets of cardboard, and they stand on an easel placed to the front and to one side of the stage. The costumes worn by the stage hands consist of overalls, jerseys, etc. Anything that looks tough will do. They have huge bulging muscles made by padding. The other characters of the play are dressed in Roman togas, which are conveniently and ridiculously made from bathrobes, blankets, scarfs, or any other similar material. The togas should be draped so that the legs are bare from the knee down, and so that there will be a bare arm and shoulder. Black ribbon or tape should be wound up the legs in a criss-cross manner. Tennis shoes, slippers, or sandals are worn on the feet. No hats are used, except in Scene III, when Caesar wears a derby into the Senate House. Some of the characters have bathrobe cords tied around their heads, with the ends tied into a bow knot and dangling. A stuffed club, bread knives made of cardboard and tin foil, the more wicked looking the better; rubber daggers, etc., are used in assassinating Caesar and in the final suicide scene. Remarks And Suggestions The stage hands must be snappy, comical workers, or the scene setting will drag. The actors should be as awkward as they can. They are supposed to be ridiculous. But they must carry everything through with perfectly solemn faces, or the effect will be ruined. Original horse-play and funny business may be added, but be careful lest too much of it spoil the play. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
