The incidents which I have related in the last chapter occurred during the last year of my captivity. In looking hack upon this time now it seems to me as if, of all those dreary ten years, the first and the last had been the most remarkable, so clearly do I remember every trifling incident which happened in them. In spite of my intense desire to be free once more I began to find my life much less hard than it had been during the previous years. In the first place, I had succeeded at last in making friends with several convicts, who had finally arrived at the conclusion that I was not a bad man. Some of them were even sincerely attached to me--e.g. the pioneer, who nearly cried when my comrade and I left the prison. We had to remain in the town for another month before leaving the place altogether, and hardly a day passed without his coming to call on us, just to take a look at us, as he used to say. Others, it is true, remained cold and repellent to the very last, and hardly ever exchanged a word with me. In the second place, I enjoy etl more liberty during this memorable last year. I found out, by a mere chance, that some of my old schoolfellows were among the officers who were in garrison in the town. I renewed our acquaintance, and they helped me to the utmost of their power. I had more money at my disposal, was able to write to my friends once more, and, what was the greatest boon of all, they gave me books to read. Overall, the book demonstrates how important representations of Siberian exile were in shaping Western responses to the Russian Revolution.

As an inveterate traveller, prolific author, and polyglot friend of some of Europe's leading musicians, such as Elgar, Sibelius and Jan?k, Newmarch deserves to be better appreciated. On the basis of both published and archival materials, the details of Newmarch's busy life are traced in an opening chapter, followed by an overview of English interest in Russian culture around the turn of the century, a period which saw a long-standing Russophobia (largely political and military) challenged by a more passionate and well-informed interest in the arts Three chapters then deal with the features that characterize Newmarch's engagement with Russian culture and society, and - more significantly perhaps - which she also championed in her native England; nationalism; the role of the intelligentsia; and feminism. In each case, Newmarch's interest in Russia was no mere instance of ethnographic curiosity; rather, her observations about and passion for Russia were translated into a commentary on the state of contemporary English cultural and social life. Her interest in nationalism was based on the conviction that each country deserved an art of its own. This study adopts neither of those approaches and deals with the reception of Fedor Dostoevskii in Britain from a double perspective. The detailed analysis of primary sources such as reviews, essays and monographs on Dostoevskii is associated here with a critical investigation of the dynamics of the reception process. On the one hand, the available sources are examined with the intention of exposing their underlying ideological tensions and impact on British literary circles. On the other hand, Fedor Dostoevskii's novels are shown to function as a prism, through which significant aspects of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British intellectual life are refracted.
