Book Synopsis Searching for Paradise by : Douglas E. Booth
Download or read book Searching for Paradise written by Douglas E. Booth and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signs of economic change loom large in the mountain West as shuttered mines and lumber mills are overshadowed by luxurious homes sprouting on valley bottoms and ridge lines. This perceptive book explains these changes, assesses their effects on the natural environment, and gauges the reactions of local communities. Drawing on concepts from economics, environmental ethics, and conservation biology, Booth suggests that the ultimate solution lies in re-directing population growth away from rural areas to reinvigorated and environmentally attractive ecological cities and to increase the density of development within rural areas themselves. Policymakers, activists, and local citizens concerned with rural sprawl will find this book an invaluable resource. Visit our website for sample chapters!

Book excerpt: Inspector Wexford searches for answers after an elderly woman is murdered in this “spellbinder” from a New York Times–bestselling author (Publishers Weekly). When Chief Inspector Wexford enters the parking garage, the woman is already dead, slumped between two cars, concealed under a velvet shroud. The inspector doesn’t even notice her as he drives away. Only later, when he sees on the news that an old woman was garroted in the shopping mall garage, does he realize how close he was to discovering the body. In a case that starts with a hidden corpse, the truth will be dangerously elusive. Before Wexford can sink his teeth into the elderly woman’s murder, he is nearly killed himself—by a politically motivated car bombing targeting his daughter. With the inspector in the hospital, the case falls to his partner, the intrepid Mike Burden, who must solve both mysteries before the shopping mall killer strikes again. The winner of three Edgar Awards, Ruth Rendell was one of the finest mystery authors of the twentieth century. Inspector Wexford was one of her most beloved creations, and The Veiled One is another “stunning” entry in the series (Publishers Weekly).

Book Synopsis Epidemiological studies on gastro-intestinal nematode infections in chickens by : Kalyakorn Wongrak
Download or read book Epidemiological studies on gastro-intestinal nematode infections in chickens written by Kalyakorn Wongrak and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study results indicated a high prevalence (>99%) of nematode infections with the most prevalent species beingthe caecal worm Heterakis gallinarum (98.5%), followed by the roundworm Ascaridiagalli(96.2%) and the hairworms Capillaria spp. (86.1%). Capillaria spp. were composed of C. obsignata, C. caudinflataand C. bursata. It can be concluded that chickens kept in free-range systems are exposed to a higher risk of nematode infections, even if the animals are kept in a rotational system and/or in small herd sizes. However, no obvious link between high mortality rates and nematode infections could be determined. The high genetic correlation between counts of closely related worm species (e.g., A. galliand H. gallinarum) may indicate the existence of similar/same genetically determined mechanism(s) for controlling these nematodesin chickens. High heritabilities for total worm burden suggest that it is feasible to select hens for nematode resistance. Nematode egg excretion in both naturally occurring and experimental infections follows repeatable diurnal fluctuations which may indicate adaptive strategies of the nematodes to both internal and external environmental factors. Since the analytic sensitivity of egg counts suffers from low faecal egg concentrations, results from the present study suggests that faeces samples taken during daytime hours have a higher diagnostic value.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Britain by : Konzelmann, Sue
Download or read book Rethinking Britain written by Konzelmann, Sue and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we had a government prepared to implement the policies that could radically change 21st-century Britain and improve people’s lives? Social and economic policies are rarely communicated clearly to the public, but it’s never been more important for citizens to understand and contribute to the debate around the country’s future. In everyday language, Rethinking Britain presents a range of ideas from some of the country’s most influential thinkers such as Kate Pickett and Ha-Joon Chang. From inflation to tax, and health to education, each contribution offers solutions which, if implemented, would lead to a fairer society. Curated by leading economists from the Progressive Economics Group and accompanied by a ‘jargon buster’, this book is an essential aid for citizens who are interested in critiquing inequalities while looking to build a better future.

Book Synopsis Two Inspector Wexford Mysteries by : Ruth Rendell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London’s Inspector Wexford has two cases to solve—a murdered wife and a missing husband—in this double dose of a “masterful series” (Los Angeles Times). Now in one volume, two novels in “one of the best-written detective series in the genre’s history,” from a New York Times–bestselling and three-time Edgar Award–winning author (The Washington Post). The Veiled One: “Why on earth?” wonders London’s chief inspector Reginald Wexford when a sixtyish housewife is found garroted in a shopping mall garage, her body concealed under a velvet shroud. Before he can find the answer, he’s nearly killed himself—by a politically motivated car bombing targeting his activist daughter. With the inspector in the hospital, the case falls to his partner, Mike Burden. But when a strange mother and son are suspected, Burdon’s trail leads him down a very twisted road. An Unkindness of Ravens: When a neighbor’s husband vanishes, Chief Inspector Wexford suspects the cad most likely ran off with one of his girlfriends. However, there are a few nagging concerns, like the man’s suspicious letter of resignation and his abandoned car. And is it just a fluke that his disappearance coincides with a rash of stabbings—all straight through the heart, all with male victims? Behind the seemingly placid domesticity of Wexford’s Sussex neighbors, there’s a growing web of tangling secrets, double lives, and triple-crosses. An Edgar Award finalist, this is a “mystery of the highest order” (The New Yorker).
