Book Synopsis Maintaining Long-Distance and Cross-Residential Relationships by : Laura Stafford
Download or read book Maintaining Long-Distance and Cross-Residential Relationships written by Laura Stafford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-12-13 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thought-provoking volume offers an innovative and intriguing approach to the study of long-distance relationships. Author Laura Stafford examines romantic long-distance relationships and then expands the conception of long-distance relationships to include other relational types. She summarizes literature across the social sciences on various types of long-distance relationships and extracts themes and patterns across the relational types. In so doing, she reconsiders approaches to and offers an expanded vision of relational maintenance. By expanding her scope beyond romantic relationships, Stafford includes those that span residences and relational types, such as noncustodial parent-child and geographically and residentially separated adult children and parents. She contends that face-to-face interaction is not necessary to maintain healthy relationships, and questions the assumption that maintaining, rather than terminating, a particular relationship is always best for the involved parties. With its interdisciplinary approach to challenging commonly held assumptions about communication and close relationships, Maintaining Long-Distance and Cross-Residential Relationships will be engaging reading for scholars in communication, psychology, sociology, mass communication, and family studies. It is also appropriate for special topics graduate courses on long-distance relationships and human communication, and will serve as a unique supplemental text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in interpersonal, relational, and family communication and family studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This worktext applies current theory to classroom practice by providing, in each chapter, a brief explanation of major concepts followed by guided practical experience in administering, scoring, and interpreting reading assessment techniques. Like the popular previous editions, the Fourth Edition: *emphasizes the use of assessment and diagnosis for instructional decision making--rather than for simply giving grades; *stresses the use of informal assessment techniques--reflecting the current emphasis in educational assessment theories--but also includes coverage of standardized test scores; *provides both classroom-tested results and interpretations of the data, giving students step-by-step experience in administering, scoring, and interpreting assessment techniques; and *includes numerous "hands-on" activities. For children to be good readers, they must be taught phonemic awareness, phonics skills, how to read fluently, and how to apply comprehension strategies. Linking Reading Assessment to Instruction: An Application Worktext for Elementary Classroom Teachers, Fourth Edition, covers all four areas. This text is designed for undergraduate or graduate reading methods courses that include a diagnosis component, reading diagnosis courses, exceptional education courses, and inservice courses on reading/literacy development. Changes in the Fourth Edition: *discussion of the text's relationship to the areas of reading proposed by the National Reading Panel Report: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension; *updated "Suggested Readings" for all chapters; *additional references to diagnostic assessments for word-analysis skills and spelling stages; *additional grouping scenarios; *new section on determining a diagnostic path, with instructional suggestions; *relevant ESOL information added in several places; and *revised Instructor's Manual includes more activities.
Book Synopsis The Barrio Gangs of San Antonio, 1915-2015 by : Mike Tapia
Download or read book The Barrio Gangs of San Antonio, 1915-2015 written by Mike Tapia and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barrio Gangs is the most comprehensive academic case study of barrio group dynamics in a major Texas city to date. This is a sociological work on the history of barrio gangs in San Antonio and other large Texas cities to the present day. It examines the century-long evolution of urban barrio subcultures using public archives, oral histories, old photos, and other forms of qualitative data. The study gives special attention to the barrio gangs’ “heyday,” from the 1940s through the 1960s, comparing their attributes to those of modern groups. It illustrates how social and technological changes have affected barrio networking processes and the intensity of the street lifestyle over time. Intergenerational shifts and the tension that accompanies such changes are also central themes in the book. Few other places are so conducive to such historical exploration as is San Antonio. Street ignobility in the barrio no doubt mirrors processes found in other Chicano communities in Texas and the Southwest. The gang contexts in major Chicano population centers have lengthy historical bases rooted in weak opportunity structures, oppression, and discrimination. This work shows that participation in street violence, drug selling, and other parts of the informal economy are functional adaptations to the social structure; the forces propelling the formation of barrio gangs are not temporary social phenomena.
