Book excerpt: Through her association with a community anti-bullying campaign launched in Haldimand, Norfolk, and neighboring communities in Southern Ontario, children’s author Deborah Ellis asked students from the ages of nine to nineteen to talk about their experiences with bullying. The results are thoughtful, candid, and often harrowing accounts of “business as usual” in and around today’s schools. The kids in this book raise questions about the way parents, teachers, and school administrators cope with bullies. They talk about which methods have helped and which ones, with the best of intentions, have failed to protect them. And some kids reveal how they have been able to overcome their fear and anger to become strong advocates for the rights of others. This is a book for reading and sharing. Each interview is followed by questions that will encourage open discussion about the nature of bullying and the ways in which individuals and schools could deal more effectively with bullies and their victims. And additional comments from international students reveal how much kids the world over have in common in the way they experience and deal with bullies. These kids have something to say. It’s time we listened.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this timely update of the seminal classic, author and activist Jodee Blanco reveals how she simply set out to share her story-and ended up igniting a grassroots movement in the nation's schools. The first survivor of school bullying to look back on those experiences as an adult, Jodee brings you up to speed on her life and work since the book's initial release with a new chapter, all-new Letter to My Readers, and Reader's Guide. She also offers the latest information on digital and cyberbullying, the Adult Survivor of Peer Abuse, her in-school antibullying program, INJJA (It's NOT Just Joking Around!), and provides discussion questions for schools. While other children were daydreaming about dances, first kisses, and college, Jodee Blanco was trying to figure out how to go from homeroom to study hall without being taunted or spit upon as she walked through the halls. This powerful, unforgettable memoir chronicles how one child was shunned-and even physically abused-by her classmates from elementary school through high school. It is an unflinching look at what it means to be the outcast, how even the most loving parents can get it all wrong, why schools are often unable to prevent disaster, and how bullying has been misunderstood and mishandled by the mental health community"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect tool to teach children how to respond to bullies. I Can Stand Up to Bullies provides parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers the opportunity to speak with children about this important topic. You can be angry for many different reasons—maybe a friend canceled a playdate with you, maybe it’s lightning when you’re supposed to be swimming, or maybe your dog destroyed your favorite toy. Maybe you’re upset that you’ve argued with a good friend, or maybe you're troubled when other kids are teasing or picking on you. In I Can Stand Up to Bullies, children discuss the different things that make them upset and angry, specifically being the target of bullying from their peers. They clear up the confusion between arguing and bullying, determining that arguing means fighting caused by misunderstandings or conflicting opinions, while bullying is simply fighting to fight. A bully isn’t looking to solve a problem; they only wish to make others upset or angry—perhaps as upset or angry as they are feeling in that moment. The children in this book teach each other important lessons they’ve learned through their own experiences with bullies, driving home the fact that bullying is never okay—but that it is always okay to find an adult if another child won’t leave them alone and is repetitively mean to them, no matter how embarrassed they may feel doing so. In I Can Stand Up to Bullies, award-winning author and illustrator Dagmar Geisler draws attention to this sensitive subject and provides advice for not only the children who are being bullied, but also those who are witnessing their friends being picked on and the bullies themselves.

Book excerpt: Stand Up, Fight Back is the story of little 9 year old boy in 4th grade being terrorized by bullies every day. It started on the school bus with verbal taunts by the bullies to all the kids. Everyday they systematically made their way around the bus teasing everyone. When it was my turn for ridicule, I tried to ignore them and hoped they would just go away. Eventually the bullies would push further and be more aggressive with their attacks to get a reaction. As they increased pressure, I would try to retreat further into my dark hole of emptiness to get away. This drove them more and more to hurt me. Eventually I caved and started to cry. It was a huge victory for the bullies to get someone to cry. As months went on the attacks became more frequent and also became physical. They would slap my head, flick my ears, punch and poke me. They would pull my shoes off and even throw them out the bus window. And the bullying made it's way off the bus and into school, the schoolyard and even out in public places. I couldn't get away. This book details the dark plight of bullying and abuse that goes on every day in schools all over the country. You hear all the details about how that little boy was systematically broken down into the darkest lows where his soul could go. I discuss the failures of the system along the way as I was being bullied. From the Bus Driver that saw it all, to the principal that heard first hand from my mother about how I looked getting off the bus being beaten to finally the bully's parents denying any wrong doing of their son. Many adults knew what was going on but none did much about it. I conclude the book with some details on how to fix this epidemic. It won't be easy and we'll never wipe it out completely. But we can take a stand against bullying, but we have to do it together. And we have to start now. The first step begins with the parents and ends with the child being bullied. Stand Up, Fight Back.

Book excerpt: Please Don't Bully Me is a new take on the epidemic of bullying. It focuses on the name calling aspect and how emotionally and mentally that affects children. It also shows how adult interactions mean the world to a child when they are bullied. Adults need to speak up and speak out against bullying, but they need to remember to be a shoulder to cry on or lend an ear. Even if it seems silly to them; to a child even being called fat is a serious thing.
