Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 10: 1878 A regular meeting was held this evening. The President in the chair. Records of last meeting read. Correspondence and donations announced. Mr. J. W. Thyng, of Salem, was elected a member. Dr. George A. Perkins, of Salem, made some remarks on Liberia, particularly of the region about Cape Palmas, where he had resided for nine years prior to 1848, connected with the Episcopal Missionary Station at that place. After defining its geographical position he spoke of the peculiarity of that part of the western coast of Africa in having no harbors, - ships being obliged to anchor in the open roadstead, and all goods are landed either through the surf or in rivers which are entered over bars of sand at their mouths. The country, though flat, was beautified by extensive forests of high trees, tangled with immense vines; the tall plumelike palms form a striking feature in the landscape, are very abundant and give the name to Cape Palmas. The President mentioned a few of the associations that cluster around this day; a day when the mind naturally reverts to the past, recalls the incidents of the year now closed, and indulges in reveries upon their probable influence in the distant future. No one can foretell the results; some of the most seemingly important will soon pass away and be forgotten, whereas the most apparrently trivial, scarcely known beyond the threshold of the humble cot of the occurrence, will, as years roll on, become the centre of great interest and attraction, as the birthplace and home of some of nature's noblemen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 29: 1897 Owing to the illness and absence of the Secretary, Henry M. Brooks, the Executive Committee prepared a full report of the work of the Institute during the past year. This report was read by President Rantoul. It showed that the year just closed had been a prosperous one for the Institute, and while the work of the Society had been hampered by the continued illness of the Secretary, the Assistant Librarian and the 2d Assistant Librarian, yet the routine work had been carried on and the Institute was in good condition, - its publications had contained articles of great merit which must prove of value to the historical and scientific student. The regular lectures and the less formal meetings, where papers were read by members of the Institute, were noted and highly commended. The matter of field meetings was considered and a continuance advised. The pressing need of more room for the many hundreds of volumes received by donation during the past year was referred to and a strong appeal for the necessary funds to bring about this much desired result was made. Reference was made to the death of Mr. William J. Foster, who had of late been of great assistance at the rooms during the illness of the Secretary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, 1884, Vol. 15 You find among the Swedes many peculiar superstitions, which seem to cling with great tenacity from by-gone times. So, for instance, it is the custom for chambermaids or others, making the beds in the morning, not to leave an unfinished bed under any pretext to go to any other work, for fear that the person that is to occupy it may not rest easily. In most Swedish stables you will find a dead crow or blackbird hung over each horse, which is considered a sure prevention for the evil one riding the horse in the stable at night, and it is asserted by the farmers that when such prevention is not taken the horses are found in the morning foaming at the mouth, sweaty and blowing hard, as if just arrived from a furious drive. In my boyhood, whenever a person sneezed it was considered polite for bystanders to say "God save you" or "Prosit;" and the more popular a person was in society the more people were ready to say "God save you" in case of sneezing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 20: 1888 On the seventh day of September last, after many vexatious postponements due to threatening and forbidding weather, the second field day of the season occurred at Montserrat, upon the hospitable invitation of our enterprising townsman, Henry W. Peabody, Esq., who has within a decade acquired there and laid out for suburban residence a romantic tract of some two hundred acres. The locality proved to be accessible and attractive. The Naumkeag Street Railway Company provided barges from their Rautoul Street terminus at the Gloucester Railroad crossing, and the Boston & Maine Corporation stopped several trains each way at their new station at Montserrat for the accommodation of the Institute. This picturesque little station was erected in 1885 from designs by Mr. Arthur Botch, a summer resident and eminent Boston architect. It owes its floral decorations to the good taste and public spirit of Mrs. William D. Pickman and a few other summer sojourners in the neighborhood, and the woodbines with which its columns as well as the rustic arbor which roofs over its mineral spring are festooned, to that of Mr. Peabody, whose hospitality to the Institute was most liberal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Essex Institute, Vol. 24: 1892 In tracing out the ethnic relations of past races and the lines pursued by them in their migrations, the material to be studied consists not only of the actual remains of man, but also of the objects and results of his handiwork. If the objects have written characters upon them, the story to be unravelled is often easy; the very style of ornamentation betrays their relationship. Of great value to the archaeologist are the enduring objects in stone, metal and terra-cotta. It will be found that those features which pertain to the households of a race, and which are successively taught from father to son, or from mother to daughter, such as methods of shooting the arrow or of weaving, are longest persistent.
