Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bulldog was originally used to drive cattle to market and to compete in a bloody sport called bullbaiting. Today, they're gentle companions who love kids. Even though these are purebred dogs, you may find them in the care of shelters or rescue groups. Remember to adopt! Don't shop if you want to bring a dog home. A brief walk and a nap on the sofa is just this dog breed's speed. Bulldogs can adapt well to apartment life and even make great companions for novice pet parents. They're affectionate with all members of the family and are fairly low-maintenance pups. Just make sure to keep them out of extreme weather, and also give them enough exercise, as weight gain is a risk with these dogs who are happy to spend most of the day on the couch.

Book excerpt: First things fіrѕt, thе tеrm bulldоg appeared аrоund thе уеаr 1500 аnd thе breed wаѕ саllеd Bulldоg because ѕuсh dogs wеrе uѕеd in bull-bаіtіng, a vеrу popular blood sport and ѕресtасlе back then. Bull-bаіtіng соnѕіѕtеd оf a tethered bull fасіng dоgѕ frоm whісh thе wіnnеr was the dоg that wоuld vісtоrіоuѕlу grаb thе bull'ѕ nоѕе аnd pinned іt tо the grоund. Obvіоuѕlу, bullѕ have considerable ѕtrеngth аnd роwеr tо hundrеdѕ оf dogs dіеd at ѕuсh еvеntѕ - thеу wеrе trаmрlеd, gored, аnd tоѕѕеd. However, brееdеrѕ of such dоgѕ tried tо ѕеlесtіvеlу рісk thе mоѕt аdеԛuаtе physiques аnd kерt on brееdіng them, gеnеrаtіоn аftеr generation. They соuld ѕее hоw much bеttеr thеѕе dogs were in thе аrеnа, so thеу kерt роlіѕhіng these dоgѕ thаt wеrе rеfеrrеd to аѕ Bulldоgѕ. Bу thе 1800s, the Bulldоg physique wаѕ ѕуnоnуmоuѕ wіth a stocky bоdу, massive heads, іnсrеdіblу strong jaws, аnd a fеаrlеѕѕ temperament. Thеѕе wеrе аll the rеаѕоnѕ whу Bulldоgѕ were so good at dоmіnаtіng fіеrсе bullѕ. In 1835, thе Cruеltу tо Anіmаlѕ Aсt 1835 іnсludеd nеw lеgіѕlаtіоn thаt рut an еnd to bull-bаіtіng, сосkfіghtіng, and all оthеr саttlе or bеаr blооd ѕроrtѕ. Thаt new regulation ѕhоuld have bееn thе еnd оf thе Bulldog but clearly, it wаѕ nоt. The Old English Bulldog wаѕ a loved brееd аnd іt was a ѕуmbоl of ѕtrеngth and fearless courage. So muсh that several Brіtіѕh еmіgrаntѕ brоught thеѕе dоgѕ wіth them when сrоѕѕіng the Atlаntіс tо settle іn New Yоrk. Thе tіmіng wаѕ grеаt bесаuѕе the mіd-17th сеnturу, thе Bіg Aррlе wаѕ fасіng сhаllеngеѕ wіth numеrоuѕ wіld bulls present іn thе сіtу. At thе time, Gоvеrnоr Rісhаrd Nісоllѕ rоundеd uр thе bеѕt bulldоgѕ аvаіlаblе аnd started brееdіng аnd trаіnіng thеm to саtсh thоѕе wіld bullѕ bу thе nose аnd hоld thеm until thеу соuld be nеutrаlіzеd by thе hаndlеr. Wіth аn аvеrаgе lіfе expectancy оf 8 years, thе English Bulldog brееd іѕ аmоngѕt the ѕhоrtеѕt lіvіng dоgѕ оut thеrе. Mеdісаl conditions аffесtіng our Bulldоg breed are wіdе-rаngіng and ѕеvеrе; they affect all fасеtѕ оf a dоg'ѕ hеаlth: eye, ѕkіn, jоіntѕ, brеаthіng, сеllѕ, аnd ѕо on.

JOHN COOPER A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1905, this extremely rare early work on the bulldog is almost impossible to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a highly respected breeder of the day. The book's 164 pages cover all aspects of the Bulldog. Beginning with the history of the breed, it moves on to discuss buying, breeding and showing amongst many other topics. It also features over 60 photographs of champion bulldogs of the day. Included in the original text are a number of adverts featuring stud dogs and dog food - all with additional photographs of bulldogs. This is a fascinating read for any Bulldog enthusiast or historian of the breed but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. In The Complete Guide to English Bulldogs you will learn everything you need to know from start to end; how to choose a puppy, training, traveling, grooming, health care and senior care. Should I buy from a breeder or adopt from a rescue? I brought my Bulldog home. What now? How can I best train my Bulldog? What are some common mistakes should I avoid? Whether you are a veteran or novice Bulldog owner, there will be something for everyone in this book. Chapters include all the basics such as: A Unique Look – The Bulldog Breed History and Characteristics The Ideal Home Finding Your Bulldog Preparing for Your Puppy The First Week The First Month Housetraining Socialization and Experience Being a Bulldog Parent Living with other dogs Training Your Bulldog Basic Commands Nutrition Grooming – Productive Bonding Basic Health Care Health Concerns Your Aging Bulldog That unforgettable face has always hidden the absolutely darling dog’s real potential. Bulldogs are not a high-energy dog, but not all of them are couch potatoes either. Bulldogs are shockingly intelligent as well, which often takes people by complete surprise (if they are basing their opinion of the dog purely on looks). One of the reasons people are so familiar with Bulldogs is that this is a breed that is considered intimidating – simply based on their looks. This has made them one of the most popular mascots in the world. They are the face of high schools, colleges, and universities, as well as sports teams. They make great mascots because they love people and don’t mind being the center of attention. As a fairly low maintenance dog, they are great for families of nearly every type. They can be fairly stubborn, but with a loving and consistent approach, they will quickly come to understand the benefits of behaving. That high intellect also means that if your Bulldog has the desire, they can be great in competitions such as Obedience and Agility. Of course, if you prefer a couch potato, many of them love that too.

Book excerpt: The Bulldog is a much different dog today than his ancestors. Descended from ancient mastiff-type dogs, the Bulldog breed was developed entirely in England. The first mention of the breed was in 1500, a description of a man "with two Bolddogges at his tayle..." The then-fierce dogs were used in a practice called bull baiting, which involved the dog grabbing onto the bull's nose and roughly shaking it. Bull baiting actually had a purpose; it was thought to tenderize the bull's meat. For many years, this practice was said to "thin" the blood of the bull and make its flesh tender after it was butchered. This belief was so strong that many areas in England had laws requiring bulls to be baited before they were slaughtered. More than that, it was a popular spectator sport in a time when there were no professional sports, TV shows, movies, or video games. The angry bull would toss the dog up in the air with its horns if it could, much to the delight of the watching crowd. The dog, on the other hand, would attempt to latch onto the bull, usually at its snout, and pin it to the ground through the force of its painful bite. Upcoming bullbaitings were advertised and crowds wagered on the outcome of the struggle. These early Bulldogs were taller and heavier than today's Bulldog, and they were bred to be especially adept at this bloody sport. Typically, they crept on their bellies toward the enraged bull so he couldn't get his horns under their bodies and toss them up in the air. And their wide mouths and powerful jaws were impossible for the bull to shake off once the Bulldog had a firm hold on its snout. His short, flat nose enabled the Bulldog to breathe while holding onto the bull's snout. He needed to be tenacious to hang onto the bull no matter how much the bull tried to shake him off. The Bulldog's high tolerance for pain was developed to enhance his ability to excel at this barbarous spot. Even the wrinkles on his head are said to have had a purpose: to direct the blood that resulted from his grip on the bull to flow away from his eyes so he wouldn't be blinded. In 1835, after many years of controversy, bullbaiting was outlawed in England, and many thought the Bulldog would disappear since he no longer had a purpose. At the time, the Bulldog wasn't an affectionate companion. The most aggressive and courageous dogs had been selectively bred for generations to be bull-baiters. They lived to fight with bulls, bears and anything else that was put before them. It was all they knew. Despite this, many people admired the Bulldog's stamina, strength, and persistence. These few decided to save the appearance and breed them to have a sweet, gentle temperament instead of the aggression needed for the baiting arena. And so the Bulldog was re-engineered. Dedicated, patient breeders started selecting only those dogs that had a docile temperament for breeding. Aggressive and neurotic dogs weren't allowed to reproduce. By focusing their attention upon the temperament of the Bulldog, these breeders transformed the Bulldog into the gentle, affectionate dog we see today.
