Book excerpt: "In length the series is unique; in quality—and there is not a weak link in the chain—it cannot but be ranked with the best of twentieth century historical novels."—T. J. Binyon, Independent Captain Jack Aubrey sets sail for the South China Sea with a new lease on life. Following his dismissal from the Royal Navy (a false accusation), he has earned reinstatement through his daring exploits as a privateer, brilliantly chronicled in The Letter of Marque. Now he is to shepherd Stephen Maturin—his friend, ship's surgeon, and sometimes intelligence agent—on a diplomatic mission to prevent links between Bonaparte and the Malay princes which would put English merchant shipping at risk. The journey of the Diane encompasses a great and satisfying diversity of adventures. Maturin climbs the Thousand Steps of the sacred crater of the orangutans; a killer typhoon catches Aubrey and his crew trying to work the Diane off a reef; and in the barbaric court of Pulo Prabang a classic duel of intelligence agents unfolds: the French envoys, well entrenched in the Sultan's good graces, against the savage cunning of Stephen Maturin.

Book excerpt: The Bank Vault Mystery, first published in 1933, is a Crime Fiction set in New York’s financial district involving the theft of a large amount of money and several murders. Following a repair visit by three engineers to fix the vault of a large bank, it is soon discovered that a bag containing $180,000 in cash has disappeared. Private detective Maxwell Fenner and NYPD Detective Inspector Bryce are called in to identify motives, suspects and to eventually solve the case. From the dustjacket: On the morning of the thirty-first three engineers accompanied by the manager visited the vault of the Consolidated Bank. Shortly after they left, it was discovered that a bag containing $180,000 in cash had disappeared. And so commenced the famous bank vault case in which Maxwell Fenner, the casual, dapper detective, made a list of six suspects and in tracking them through a maze of motives and two murders found a criminal genius. The Bank Vault Mystery is remarkable for the originality and logic of its complex plot. The setting, too, in and about Wall Street, Fulton Street, and the financial district is full of local color. Its finished, careful style makes it particularly enjoyable whether you read many or few detective stories.

Book excerpt: Knossos, like the Acropolis or Stonehenge, is a symbol for an entire culture. The Knossos Labyrinth was first built in the reign of a Middle Kingdom Egyptian pharaoh, and was from the start the focus of a glittering and exotic culture. Homer left elusive clues about the Knossian court and when the lost site of Knossos gradually re-emerged from obscurity in the nineteenth century, the first excavators - Minos Kalokairinos, Heinrich Schliemann, and Arthur Evans - were predisposed to see the site through the eyes of the classical authors. Rodney Castleden argues that this line of thought was a false trail and gives an alternative insight into the labyrinth which is every bit as exciting as the traditional explanations, and one which he believes is much closer to the truth. Rejecting Evans' view of Knossos as a bronze age royal palace, Castleden puts forward alternative interpretations - that the building was a necropolis or a temple - and argues that the temple interpretation is the most satisfactory in the light of modern archaeological knowledge about Minoan Crete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jean Rikhoffs life often reads as if it were fiction instead of an actual catalog of facts. Shes had no interest in settling down into what would be described as a normal life. In this memoir, she recaps her lifes out-of-the ordinary adventures against the backdrop of water, earth, fire, and air. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is Rickhoffs account of growing up in the 1950s. She tells about trying many roles, such as writer, wife, mother, professor, friend, with her real role in life always seeming to evade her. Her adventures include several years spent in Europe and numerous visits to Africa and India as well as remote locations such as Cambodia and the Easter Islands. Among her many experiences are a doomed love affair with a Spanish count, an extraordinary encounter with a Masai chieftain in Kenya, and an intense and humorous friendship with the famous American sculptor David Smith. With anecdotes and photographs, this memoir shows that through all of Rikhoffs many exploits, she is searching for who she isnot an appendage to someone else, but as a woman who wants to carve out a life that is uniquely her own. Best Memoir of 2011 from the Adirondack Center for Writing

This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 1095 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the health/fitness interaction in an historical context. Beginning in primitive hunter-gatherer communities, where survival required adequate physical activity, it goes on to consider changes in health and physical activity at subsequent stages in the evolution of “civilization.” It focuses on the health impacts of a growing understanding of medicine and physiology, and the emergence of a middle-class with the time and money to choose between active and passive leisure pursuits. The book reflects on urbanization and industrialization in relation to the need for public health measures, and the ever-diminishing physical demands of the work-place. It then evaluates the attitudes of prelates, politicians, philosophers and teachers at each stage of the process. Finally, the book explores professional and governmental initiatives to increase public involvement in active leisure through various school, worksite, recreational and sports programmes.
