Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, , course: Management/Business Studies, language: English, abstract: The Indian cellular services market is growing at a rapid pace and the competition has also increased many folds. It has become imperative for the service providers to adopt such technologies and strategies which ensure their success in such a dynamic situation. As a result, the service providers are trying to develop an understanding about the customers in terms of enriching their experience by providing quality services resulting into a higher satisfaction and ultimately loyalty. With constantly decreasing Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) per month in a low tariff regime, the cellular operators in India are looking towards value added offerings for their customers in order to increase their ARPUs and survive in the coming tough times as they are unable to rely solely on the conventional voice services. The fact that the majority of cell-phone users are prepaid customers indicates towards a tendency for higher customer churn rate and thin profit margins to the mobile service providers despite a phenomenal increase in subscriber base. However, the situation has further been complicated with the instigation of mobile number portability, as it is going to enhance the customer churn rate due to the intense competition being faced by the operators in this market on the one hand and on the other very demanding customers. In such a scenario, the challenge for Indian cellular operators is to understand the preferences of their customers better and then to successfully offer the services that foster greater customer retention, as the entry of new global players in telecom market has further resulted in mounting customer acquisition and retention costs. Thus, all these facts highlight the relevance of value added services in an ever growing telecom market as a key strategic tool, not only for differentiation of services but also as a factor responsible for developing satisfaction and loyalty among the customers. Therefore, the present research study attempts to study the effects of Value Added Services (VAS) on Service Quality vis-à-vis Customer Satisfaction and Customer Loyalty in wireless telecommunication market. The findings of the present study convey that the service providers must concentrate their efforts not only on improving the core services but also the quality of Value Added Service (VAS) offered, as they have a potential to act as a strategic tool in order to enhance the customers’ satisfaction which will ultimately result in higher customer loyalty.

Digitalization, capacity building and user engagement with truly interdisciplinary and cross-domain collaboration are just a few of the areas which must be addressed. This book presents 190 full papers from the Medical Informatics Europe (MIE 2018) conference, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in April 2018. The MIE conferences aim to enable close interaction and networking between an international audience of academics, health professionals, patients and industry partners. The title of this year’s conference is: Building Continents of Knowledge in Oceans of Data – The Future of Co-Created eHealth, and contributions cover a broad range of topics related to the digitalization of healthcare, citizen participation, data science, and changing health systems, addressed from the perspectives of citizens, patients and their families, healthcare professionals, service providers, developers and policy makers. The second part of the title in particular has attracted a large number of papers describing strategies to create, evaluate, adjust or deliver tools and services for improvements in healthcare organizations or to enable citizens to respond to the challenges of dealing with health systems. Papers are grouped under the headings: standards and interoperability, implementation and evaluation, knowledge management, decision support, modeling and analytics, health informatics education and learning systems, and patient-centered services. Attention is also given to development for sustainable use, educational strategies and workforce development, and the book will be of interest to both developers and practitioners of healthcare services.

Book excerpt: This book examines the extensive changes in markets, technologies and value chains that telecommunication companies are currently confronted with. It analyzes the crossroads they have reached and the choices that now need to be made – to be a bit pipe or a trendsetter of digitalization. Based on an analysis of the key challenges for telcos, the book derives future market scenarios and puts forward recommendations for how they can successfully position themselves. It proposes a framework based on seven “levers,” which addresses concrete measures in each step of the value chain, ranging from technology, IT and processes, to innovation, marketing and sales issues. The book discusses the current challenges and provides both general recommendations and concrete solutions. Respected experts illustrate innovative strategic and technical trends and provide insights gained in real-life transformation projects. Recent developments in the areas of regulation, product development, competition between over-the-top (OTT) providers and telcos, as well as technical innovations like 5G, SDN/NFV, LEO satellites and MEC are discussed. Accordingly, practitioners, managers and researchers alike will benefit from the book’s wealth of examples and up-to-date insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the telecom world, services have usually been conceived with a specific mindset. This mindset has defined the traditional characteristics of these services; services distinguished by their linkage with the access network, tight control over service use (e.g., authentication, billing), lack of deep personalization capabilities (mass services only) and reliance on standardization to achieve end-to-end interoperability between all the actors of the value chain (e.g., operators, platform manufacturers, device manufactures). This book offers insights into this complex but exciting world of telecommunications characterized by constant evolution, and approaches it from technology as well as business perspectives. The book is appropriately structured in three parts: (a) an overview of the state-of-the-art in fixed/mobile NGN and standardization activities; (b) an analysis of the competitive landscape between operators, device manufactures and OTT providers, emphasizing why network operators are challenged on their home turf; and (c) opportunities for business modeling and innovative telecom service offers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before there was Steve Jobs, there was Norman Bel Geddes. A ninth-grade dropout who found himself at the center of the worlds of industry, advertising, theater, and even gaming, Bel Geddes designed everything from the first all-weather stadium, to Manhattan's most exclusive nightclub, to Futurama, the prescient 1939 exhibit that envisioned how America would look in the not-too-distant 60s. In The Man Who Designed the Future, B. Alexandra Szerlip reveals precisely how central Bel Geddes was to the history of American innovation. He presided over a moment in which theater became immersive, function merged with form, and people became consumers. A polymath with humble Midwestern origins, Bel Geddes’ visionary career would launch him into social circles with the Algonquin roundtable members, stars of stage and screen, and titans of industry. Light on its feet but absolutely authoritative, this first major biography is a must for anyone who wants to know how America came to look the way it did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together diverse aspects of postmodernism by philosophers, literary critics, historians of architecture, and sociologists. It addresses the nature of postmodernism in painting, architecture, and the performing arts, and explores the social and political implications of postmodern theories of culture. The book raises the question of whether postmodernism is to be seen as one more epoch or period within a succession of eras, or as a challenge to the modernist practice of periodization itself. The nature of the subject and of subjectivity is explored in order to resituate and contextualize the autonomous subject of the modern literary traditions. Postmodern approaches to philosophy, both analytical and continental (including the work of Deleuze, Derrida, Foucault, Rorty, and Cavell) are scrutinized and compared with a view to the question of foundationalism and with respect to philosophy's historical reflection on its own exclusionary practices. After the Future discusses the ramifications of technology and programs for the renewal of community in a radically pluralistic society. It also discusses the question of language and the diverse ways of distinguishing the articulate from the inarticulate.

Book excerpt: Farsighted and fascinating predictions for a new world order Veteran international correspondent Paul Starobin masterfully mixes fresh reportage with rigorous historical analysis to envision a world in which the United States is no longer the dominant superpower. Following an insightful study of America's global ascendency, Starobin provides the reasons for America's waning influence and explores five possible paths for the future, each of which is already in the making: A global chaos that could be dark or happy; a multipolar order of nation-states; a global Chinese imperium; an age of global city-states; or a universal civilization leading to world government. Starobin's tone is somber but in the end hopeful-the world after America need not be a disaster for America, and may even be liberating.
