Book Synopsis Building Tomorrow by : Arthur D. Bernhardt

Book excerpt: Few detailed studies that involve complex interactions of social, economic, and technical factors have much direct and immediate impact on the real world. This study could well be one of those few exceptions. Arthur Bernhardt, an internationally known building industry expert, recognized as the leading authority on the mobile home industry, has compiled in this book overwhelming evidence that applying the efficient methods and techniques of that industry to other, older sectors of the building industry will enable the United States and countries around the world to overcome the housing crisis, making it possible to divert some of the expenditures for public subsidization of housing to other social priorities. Far from advocating an endless sprawl of mobile home parks as the basis for tomorrow's housing, Bernhardt states at the outset that "as the housing crisis continues to worsen, many people are asking whether mobile homes might become a viable housing alternative.... My personal answer is 'I hope not!'" Rather, his goal is to transfer the innovative spirit and built-in efficiencies of the mobile home production and delivery system to a full range of housing configurations. Bernhardt reached this conclusion only after overcoming an initial skepticism—he originally shared a widespread negative predisposition toward the mobile home industry: "This basic conclusion is the exact opposite of what I expected to find when I first looked at the mobile home industry years ago. Then, sharing with many others in the United States a strong bias against this industry, I decided to devote a few weeks to writing a negative case study on 'how notto industrialize the building industry.' One of the first findings of this investigation, however, was startling: The mobile home industry is the most efficient building industry in the world." The author then undertook a full-scale study of all aspects of the industry, in a seven-year project at MIT. He built a staff of more than a hundred professionals in such fields as engineering, economics, finance, law, management, political science, and sociology, scattered throughout the country. Supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Bernhardt and his staff conducted thousands of surveys and interviews in all sectors of the building industry and at all levels of government. The results of this research were compiled in a massive, five-volume, 5000 page report to HUD. Bernhardt's up-to-the-minute book—which is richly illustrated with halftones and drawings—condenses that report, and sets forth in a vigorous and explicit way the conclusions and recommendations that the full weight of the evidence compels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable design requires that design practitioners respond to a particular set of social, cultural and environmental conditions. 'Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design' defines a set of strategies for understanding the complexities of a regional setting. Through a series of international case studies, it examines how architects and designers have applied a variety of tactics to achieve culturally and environmentally appropriate design solutions. • Shows that architecture and design are inextricably linked to social and environmental processes, and are not just technical or aesthetic exercises. • Articulates a variety of methods to realise goals of socially responsible and environmentally responsive design. • Calls for a principled approach to design in an effort to preserve fragile environments and forge sustainable best practice. 'Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design' will appeal to educators and professional practitioners in the fields of architecture, heritage conservation and urban design. Dr. Kingston Wm. Heath is Professor and Director of the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Oregon. Previously he was Professor of Architecture at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte where he taught seminars on vernacular architecture and regional design theory. He holds graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and Brown University. In addition to numerous articles in scholarly journals, he is the author of Patina of Place, and winner of the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award from The Vernacular Architecture Forum for excellence in a scholarly work. He has earned an international reputation in the field of vernacular architecture and has directed field schools in Italy and Croatia.

Book Synopsis Housing America in the 1980s by : John S. Adams
Download or read book Housing America in the 1980s written by John S. Adams and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1988-05-16 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing provides shelter, in a variety of forms, but it is also resonant with meaning on many other levels--as a financial asset, a status symbol, an expression of private aspirations and identities, a means of inclusion or exclusion, and finally as a battleground for social change. John Adams' impressive new study explores this complex topic in all its dimensions. Using census data and other housing surveys, Adams describes the recent history of housing in America; the nature of housing supply and demand; patterns of housing use; and selected housing policy questions. Adams supplements this national and regional analysis with a remarkable set of small-area analyses, revealing how neighborhood settings affect housing use and how market forces and other trends interact to shape a neighborhood. These analyses focus on a sample of over fifty urbanized areas, including the nation's three largest cities (New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago). Special two-color maps illustrate the dynamics of housing use in each of these communities. Clearly and insightfully, this volume paints a unique picture of the American "housing landscape," a landscape that reflects and regulates significant aspects of our national life.
