Book excerpt: This project involves the examination of cultural trauma narratives of ethnic, gender, and sexual identity groups that represent the demographics of the North Texas VA Medical Center. The evaluation of these particular trauma narratives is for the intended purpose of developing the cultural competence of pastoral care givers that leads to cultural humility. This project (an eight-week didactic series) considered the trauma embedded within the black-bodied experiences of African Americans, the Jewish holocaust, prejudice and violence against the LBGTQ community, as well as, the gendered marginalization of women. An exploration of embodied trauma, such as, post-traumatic stress and the inter-generational transmission of trauma was also considered. The didactic lesson series culminated in the clinical pastoral education students completing a cultural genogram, identification of cultural trauma in their own personal narratives, and the development of pastoral interventions that would mediate the healing of those identified spiritual injuries.
