These reductions are expected to be studied for conventional and renewable energy systems, showing that passive systems provide better thermal comfort and reduce the initial investment and energy consumption, making low-cost buildings feasible.

The performance examination tests output variation across Ontario and between the system types. The economic analysis explores the relevant costs, commodity prices and government incentives. An economic model is developed to test the returns, payback period, sensitivity and uncertainty. Analysis with this model for Toronto indicates that ground source heat pumps provide the most energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) savings, and economic returns for most audiences. Solar air and water heating generally provide the least amount of energy and GHG savings but provide good returns for the non-homeowner audiences due to available incentives. Generally, the lowest returns are for wind and PV systems.
