Book excerpt: This book is an examination of the minimum performance standard developed in collaboration with the Office of Law Enforcement Standards to determine the requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of personal body armour intended to protect against gunfire. The standard discussed specifies the minimum performance requirements that equipment must meet to satisfy the requirements of criminal justice agencies and the methods that shall be used to test this performance. Body armour manufacturers and purchasers may use this standard to help determine whether specific armour models meet the minimum performance standards and test methods. The National Institute of Justice standards are subject to continued research, development, testing, review, and revision and are re-evaluated and modified as necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lightweight body armor has been widely available for use by law enforcement personnel for more than 25 years. The dramatic reduction in officer homicides following the introduction of body armor attests to the protection it provides. This success story extends far beyond protection from handguns—an estimated 2,500 lives have been spared, including cases in which body armor prevented serious injuries to officers from other types of assaults or accidents. The National Institute of Justice2 (NIJ) has developed standards for body armor performance through its Office of Law Enforcement Standards (OLES). The standard for ballistic resistance of body armor was developed 28 years ago and has gone through four revisions. In September 2000, NIJ introduced its standard for stab and puncture resistance of body armor. Body armor is tested as a part of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) voluntary equipment testing program to determine compliance with the NIJ standards, and NLECTC disseminates those test results and other pertinent information to the law enforcement and corrections communities. While body armor is a household word in the criminal justice community, questions about its selection and use are frequently asked. This guide responds to commonly expressed concerns. It provides information to help determine what level of protection is consistent with the threats to which individual officers are exposed. It also discusses armor selection from the variety of styles available, together with the proper care of armor in service. The NIJ standards are discussed in detail, as well as the use of the standards in armor procurement. In addition, the guide discusses administrative concerns, including the issue of replacing in service armor, and describes other sources of information. NIJ asks all departments to exercise prudent judgment in selecting armor appropriate to their needs. In so doing, NIJ urges proper attention to those factors that affect the wearability of armor in order to encourage routine, full-time use by all on-duty officers. The temptation to order armor that provides more protection than realistically needed should be resisted, because doing so may increase the likelihood that the armor will not be worn routinely. This guide opens with a history of the development of body armor and background on the lives it has saved. The heart of the guide—how to proceed to select and purchase body armor—begins with chapter 6 and includes chapters explaining how to assess the level of protection needed, things to think about when selecting armor, and ways to keep it in proper working order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an interesting psychological coping mechanism that all humans have when dealing with certain emotional interactions, particularly criticisms and uncomfortable conversations that pierce our confidence and sway our self-esteem. Some people do their best to keep their emotions at bay by concealing their emotional selves and reacting more appropriately. This psychological coping mechanism and controlled emotional sharing is often due to a form of self-protection called emotional armor. The easiest way to picture this tangible psychological coping mechanism is to imagine an impenetrable plating like titanium steel under a person's skin, or similar to the exterior suits of armor worn by knights when going into battle in the past. The purpose of those extra layers of steel was twofold. First, from a psychological viewpoint, the suit provided peace of mind and a level of confidence to the fighter by alleviating the fear of being vulnerable or exposed during the battle. Second, from a physical viewpoint, it provided a real concrete protection against the enemy's attacks by interfering with their ability to land any critical or life-ending blows. These two factors play a similar psychological role in our modern-day use of emotional armor. Every human being experiences a criticism at some point in their lives. Negative comments can be received differently by people and can have a detrimental effect on a person's wellbeing. Some individuals respond to criticism in a less emotional and more cerebral manner. They develop their emotional armor and use some techniques to cope with the situation in a more intelligent and appropriate manner. There are two layers of emotional armor. The first layer protects ourselves against degradation, abuse, insult, and being constantly upset. The inner layer helps us build lasting self-confidence to control our emotions and react more appropriately. This book outlines the important ingredients and recipes needed to develop your own emotional armor.

Book excerpt: Critical Theory Today is the essential introduction to contemporary criticial theory. It provides clear, simple explanations and concrete examples of complex concepts, making a wide variety of commonly used critical theories accessible to novices without sacrificing any theoretical rigor or thoroughness. This new edition provides in-depth coverage of the most common approaches to literary analysis today: feminism, psychoanalysis, Marxism, reader-response theory, new criticism, structuralism and semiotics, deconstruction, new historicism, cultural criticism, lesbian/gay/queer theory, African American criticism, and postcolonial criticism. The chapters provide an extended explanation of each theory, using examples from everyday life, popular culture, and literary texts; a list of specific questions critics who use that theory ask about literary texts; an interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby through the lens of each theory; a list of questions for further practice to guide readers in applying each theory to different literary works; and a bibliography of primary and secondary works for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough and original study of the linothorax, the linen armor worn by Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great led one of the most successful armies in history and conquered nearly the entirety of the known world while wearing armor made of cloth. How is that possible? In Reconstructing Ancient Linen Body Armor, Gregory S. Aldrete, Scott Bartell, and Alicia Aldrete provide the answer. An extensive multiyear project in experimental archaeology, this pioneering study presents a thorough investigation of the linothorax, linen armor worn by the Greeks, Macedonians, and other ancient Mediterranean warriors. Because the linothorax was made of cloth, no examples of it have survived. As a result, even though there are dozens of references to the linothorax in ancient literature and nearly a thousand images of it in ancient art, this linen armor remains relatively ignored and misunderstood by scholars. Combining traditional textual and archaeological analysis with hands-on reconstruction and experimentation, the authors unravel the mysteries surrounding the linothorax. They have collected and examined all of the literary, visual, historical, and archaeological evidence for the armor and detail their efforts to replicate the armor using materials and techniques that are as close as possible to those employed in antiquity. By reconstructing actual examples using authentic materials, the authors were able to scientifically assess the true qualities of linen armor for the first time in 1,500 years. The tests reveal that the linothorax provided surprisingly effective protection for ancient warriors, that it had several advantages over bronze armor, and that it even shared qualities with modern-day Kevlar. Previously featured in documentaries on the Discovery Channel and the Canadian History Channel, as well as in U.S. News and World Report, MSNBC Online, and other international venues, this groundbreaking work will be a landmark in the study of ancient warfare.

Book excerpt: Includes over 30 maps and Illustrations The Staff Ride Handbook for the Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863, provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this key Civil War campaign. Part I describes the organization of the Union and Confederate Armies, detailing their weapons, tactics, and logistical, engineer, communications, and medical support. It also includes a description of the U.S. Navy elements that featured so prominently in the campaign. Part II consists of a campaign overview that establishes the context for the individual actions to be studied in the field. Part III consists of a suggested itinerary of sites to visit in order to obtain a concrete view of the campaign in its several phases. For each site, or “stand,” there is a set of travel directions, a discussion of the action that occurred there, and vignettes by participants in the campaign that further explain the action and which also allow the student to sense the human “face of battle.” Part IV provides practical information on conducting a Staff Ride in the Vicksburg area, including sources of assistance and logistical considerations. Appendix A outlines the order of battle for the significant actions in the campaign. Appendix B provides biographical sketches of key participants. Appendix C provides an overview of Medal of Honor conferral in the campaign. An annotated bibliography suggests sources for preliminary study.
