Book excerpt: People can be excluded from freedom and the good things in life by age, disability, poverty, unfair discrimination, crime or the fear of crime, and arrogant and unresponsive governments. This practical reference deals with all of these factors, and shows the links between them. In addition to several hundred shorter notes it includes over a thousand major entries, each of which comprises: a summary of relevant facts, incisive commentary to help readers cut through the fog of jargon and propaganda that confuses many of these issues and websites where the latest information may be found. It concludes with a detailed bibliography of around 500 useful references. The work will be found useful by professionals and managers in all walks of life; by central and local government officials and representatives, and by students in the social sciences. It devotes particular attention to the all-important Disability Discrimination Act, and numerous detailed entries, accompanied in many cases by elegant diagrams, suggest to architects and other designers, facilities managers, and personnel managers how the requirements of the Act may be met.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In After the Coalition five new Conservative Members of Parliament tackle the challenges of contemporary Britain. They argue that Conservative principles adapted to the modern world are essential for national success. For Britain to prosper in today's global economy, we need a new era of responsibility, for governments as well as individuals. The Conservative Party last won a general election in 1992. The formation of the coalition in 2010 ushered in a politics of compromise for the important task of bringing the deficit under control. At the next election, the Conservative Party may well fight for its own mandate. What that will be and the ideas supporting it need to be defined now. After the Coalition is an attempt to do precisely this.

This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Health has reported that the NHS achieved £5.8 billion of savings in 2011-12, virtually all of the forecast total of £5.9 billion. Most of the savings were generated through the pay freeze for public sector staff, and reductions in the prices primary care trusts pay for healthcare. NHS bodies also made savings by cutting back-office costs. However, there is limited assurance that all the reported savings were achieved. The NAO substantiated a total of £3.4 billion of NHS efficiency savings. Although the savings made by NHS providers as a percentage of operating costs are increasing, it is not clear what level of savings is sustainable over time. Changes to transform services take time to implement and the Department has always expected that these savings will predominantly come in the latter half of the four-year period. The NHS is seeking to maintain the quality of, and access to, healthcare at the same time as making efficiency savings. In 2011-12, the NHS performed well against headline indicators of quality, including waiting times and healthcare associated infection rates. The indicators focus mainly on hospital care and the Department faces a significant challenge in monitoring quality across the NHS as a whole. The Department does not know whether the demand for healthcare is being managed in ways that inappropriately restrict patients' access to care. Reducing demand and redesigning care pathways to treat patients in the most appropriate setting are key ways of generating savings

Book excerpt: The new NHS is a very different organisation to the one set up 60 years ago. Two decades of reforms have introduced a market element, unprecedented transparency, patient choice, new incentives, devolved accountabilities and a host of new regulatory bodies. All these changes have made governance a crucial and contested issue in health care. Governing the New NHS makes sense of the new systems and will enable anyone interested in healthcare governance to navigate their way confidently through the maze. It describes, assesses and critiques the new governance arrangements. It examines how they are working in practice and how practitioners are responding. The book: explains current governance arrangements and explores related issues and tensions discusses the roles and interrelationships of boards and effective board practice offers a range of practical tools and frameworks. Each chapter is supplemented with expert witness statement written by leading practitioners in the health system. This practical book will be invaluable to all those interested in health governance, policy and management - whether academic, student or practitioner.

Divided into 8 chapters with 2 annexes, it covers the following areas: the background to the White Paper; the context of change, looking at the major health and social challenges that have prompted a review of pharmacy services; expanding access and choice through more help with medicines; more pharmacy services supporting healthy living and better care; communications and relationships and how these can be improved by highlighting the varied services and benefits offered by pharmacies and pharmacists; research and innovation in practice; the pharmacy profession; the current structure and contractual arrangements of the pharmacy system. The Government has set out a future vision for the pharmacy services in England, including a number of specific objectives, including: making pharmacies into "healthy living centres", promoting health and helping people to take care of themselves; offer NHS treatment for minor ailments; provide specific support for people who are starting a new course of treatment; offer screening for those at risk of vascular disease; use new technologies to expand choice and improve care in hospitals and the community; become commissioned based on the range and quality of the services being delivered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the policy approaches of Conservative governments since 2015, this book examines key social policy areas including education, health, housing, employment, children and young people, and more. Respected social policy researchers explore the degree to which the positions and policies of recent Conservative governments have differed from the previous Coalition government (2010-15). They consider the extent to which austerity has continued and the influence of other policy emphases, such as a 'levelling up' agenda. Reflecting on the rapid changes of Prime Minister, they compare the themes of the Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak administrations, critically examine the impacts of the external shocks of Brexit and COVID-19, and the changing patterns of public expenditure.
