Book excerpt: Paris, 1871. Four young people will rewrite their destinies. Paris is in revolt. After months of siege at the hands of the Prussians, a wind of change is blowing through the city, bringing with it murmurs of a new revolution. Alone and poverty-stricken, sixteen-year-old Zéphyrine is quickly lured in by the ideals of the city's radical new government, and she finds herself swept away by its promises of freedom, hope, equality and rights for women. But she is about to be seduced for a second time, following a fateful encounter with a young violinist. Anatole's passion for his music is soon swiftly matched only by his passion for this fierce and magnificent girl. He comes to believe in Zéphyrine's new politics - but his friends are not so sure. Opera singer Marie and photographer Jules have desires of their own, and the harsh reality of life under the Commune is not quite as enticing for them as it seems to be for Anatole and Zéphyrine. And when the violent reality of revolution comes crashing down at their feet, can they face the danger together - or will they be forced to choose where their hearts really lie?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empire and Liberty brings together two epic subjects in American history: the story of the struggle to end slavery that reached a violent climax in the Civil War, and the story of the westward expansion of the United States. Virginia Scharff and the contributors to this volume show how the West shaped the conflict over slavery and how slavery shaped the West, in the process defining American ideals about freedom and influencing battles over race, property, and citizenship. This innovative work embraces East and West, as well as North and South, as the United States observes the 2015 sesquicentennial commemoration of the end of the Civil War. A companion volume to an Autry National Center exhibition on the Civil War and the West, Empire and Liberty brings leading historians together to examine artifacts, objects, and artworks that illuminate this period of national expansion, conflict, and renewal.

Book excerpt: Historians speak of the shot heard 'round the world, but the American Revolution might better be described in terms of the speech heard 'round the world. For more than two hundred years, the impassioned speech of Patrick Henry - I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death - has resounded in the hearts and minds of freedom-loving people everywhere. Henry's life embodied the spirit of American courage and patriotism. Give Me Liberty goes beyond the oratory and eloquence to portray this remarkable man, his family, his ideas, and his times.

Book excerpt: When You Hear The Bugle Call subtitled, “Battling PTSD and the Unraveling of the American Conscience” is a compelling, poignant and straightforward presentation of sickness and healing, righteousness opposing wrong doing, and the eventual triumph of the human spirit despite overwhelming obstacles and barriers. This very personal account of war and its aftermath was written to benefit combat veterans agonized by severe and chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), composed by one who is living the nightmare, one of their own, a fellow warrior. In the broader scope, this account is meant to help them, and their friends and loved ones to better understand this overwhelming psychological, involuntary, and innate response to continual, life threatening situations. This book will bring them to the realization that they are not alone in their sufferings, help is as close as the nearest Veterans Administration Medical Center and any caring individual who has read and benefited from the pages of this presentation. Furthermore, it is meant to assist, comfort, understand and equally as important, accept those who gave their best to defend and protect us. It’s not only the GI I am talking about but also the police officer, the fireman, and the rescue personnel… all those who are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t!” All the brave men and women who place their lives in jeopardy, everyday, for the sake of others… for the sake of something bigger than self! This presentation addresses every symptom, obstacle or negative circumstance a PTSD victim will likely experience or encounter, and must overcome, if he or she expects some semblance of peace, love, success, respect, and dignity in their lives! Victims of terror and natural disasters will benefit from this writing as well. In my opinion there is little, if any, significant difference between combat PTSD and PTSD manifested as a result of traumatic events that occur in the “civilian” world. This work is not an ordinary, run of the mill “shoot ‘em up” military memoir! PTSD negatively impacts every interpersonal relationship! This book clearly and frankly relates, in vivid detail, how PTSD affects victims in the work place and social settings. In today’s fast paced, very competitive, high stress work-a-day world virtually every victim’s well being, employment and/or career is at risk. There are no immunities or safe harbors! This account addresses those many complex issues and more! All who read this narrative will profit from its message! Spouses, grown children, friends, relatives, employers, supervisors, human resource managers, co-workers and the general public will benefit from first hand knowledge and look with newfound compassion and understanding on those who defend(ed) their life, limbs and freedoms on a daily basis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised manuscript for the WW1 book, sponsored originally by Westmeath Community Development in 2011, focuses upon Kilbeggan in the Irish Republic while making comparisons with the experiences of similar towns in Counties Westmeath and Offaly. The suffering, heroism, and poignant accounts of so many young men sacrificing their lives, become alive in what would otherwise remain as the forgotten history of long since abandoned Irish regiments. Many youngsters also returned as physically and mentally scarred wrecks, to a civilian existence ill-equipped to help them. One surprise from the study concerns the number of older recruits, a few even over fifty years, who served as infantrymen. The study also recalls defunct regiments like the Connaught Rangers, or the Leinster Regiment, which gained four Victoria Cross awards in WW1. Military units emerge with less familiar names; for instance, the Inland Water Transport Corps. The study extends to the wider local civilian communities drawn into the European war of 1914-1918, especially the enormous contribution made by the remarkable women involved in relief work, and the tragedy sometimes resulting from that commitment. An example from the region is Venice C.H. Hackett, a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse who returned ill to London from abroad, only to die in October 1918 from the raging Spanish flu. Her remains lie in Liss, County Offaly. Yet, countless names of civilian helpers are unknown. Who indeed answered the bugle call?
