The original version has a top speed of 408.00 km/h (253.52 mph). It was named Car of the Decade (2000-2009) by the BBC television programme Top Gear. Designed and developed by the German Volkswagen Group (based on the Bentley Hunaudieres concept) and produced by Bugatti Automobiles SAS at their headquarters in Chateau Saint Jean in Molsheim (Alsace, France), the Veyron's chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed by Jozef Kaba of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being conducted under the guidance of former Peterbilt Trucks engineer and now Bugatti Engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber. A number of special variants have been produced, including two targa tops. In December 2010, Bugatti began offering prospective buyers the ability to customize exterior and interiors colours by using the Veyron 16.4 Configurator application on the marque's official website. The car is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti company. The 16.4 refers to 16 cylinders and 4 turbochargers. Each cylinder has four valves for a total of sixty four, but the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following up on Crap Cars and My Dad Had One of Those, Top Gear celebrates the midlife crisis with the definitive collection of the flashest, fastest, most impractical cars ever to be found in the driveways of otherwise perfectly sensible men. Drawing on the high level of expertise in this area, Top Gear explores the phenomenon of motoring and the midlife crisis, identifying over 50 classics of the genre across four desperate decades. From Ford Capri to Ferrari Testarossa, it celebrates the flashest, fastest and most ridiculous attempts to cover a bald spot, meanwhile offering a profound insight into the complex psychology of a middle-aged man and his quest for eternal youth. Top Gear's Midlife Crisis Cars both rejoices and recoils at the time-honoured tradition of flushing the children's inheritance on something you're too arthritic to get into in the first place.

Book excerpt: From the sensational Chevrolet Corvette to the stream-lined Toyota Celica, here is the ultimate history of classic cars manufactured since 1975, plus those dream and futuristic cars that were marvels of car design but never made it into production. This comprehensive visual reference shows every important marque from A-Z, highlighting some of the most significant and beautiful cars of the century. Detailed descriptions, history and technical information accompany every entry, making this the most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the contemporary classic car. This book also highlights the world's dream cars that were built as showcases but were never actually mass-produced. From major design houses such as Bertone and Ghia, these cars are at the very cutting edge of car design: futuristic models that were deemed too daring, too brash or too expensive to make commercial sense, but which pay tribute to the imagination and drive of car designers today. With over 800 stunning images, this title is the definitive gallery of classic and dream cars and the decisive reference book for every enthusiast and lover of the automobile.

Book excerpt: 'When an owner stood by his Triumph Stag, it was usually because he couldn't get the door open.' 'The Niki demonstrated every handling vice known to suspension engineers, plus some invented especially for this car.' 'If you needed a sudden burst of acceleration in the Goggomobil Dart, it was best to jump out and run.' It's true that cars are getting better and better. But sometimes, despite the designer's best intentions, instead of a peach we get a lemon. And while car enthusiasts (WHEELS magazine has a circulation of about 65,000 copies) will argue endlessly about what are the best cars, they'll argue even more ferociously about what are the WORST. LEMON! is a catalogue of 60 courageous disasters, from the 1958 Ford Edsel (by the 1960s 'edsel' was used in the US as a byword for failure, and the 23rd edition of the Webster Dictionary made it official) to the much-loved travesty, the P76 (when people took P76s in for warranty work they carried lists of the things that didn't need fixing). Bad design, appalling execution, ridiculous pretensions, ludicrous names- this detailed and hilarious look at automotive atrocities from the 1950s to the 1990s is a motoring Hall of Shame. Great photographs from car manufacturers' 'NEVER AGAIN!' Photo Archives will make this book impossible to resist. There are also plenty of top ten lists (top ten worst designs; top ten worst for handling etc) for those who suffer from list mania. The perfect Father's Day gift, LEMON! will also make a great stocking filler at Christmas. From Alfa to Zeta, from the tiny to the gargantuan and from the endearingly incompetent to the bombastically stupid, LEMON! will leave you not only laughing, but wondering how so many car makers got away with so much for so long.
