Book Synopsis The State and the Family by : Anne Hélène Gauthier
Download or read book The State and the Family written by Anne Hélène Gauthier and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an original analysis of qualitative and quantitative material from twenty-two industrialized countries, this book traces the development of state support for families since the turn of the century. Assembling elements from demography, sociology, and economics, it argues that demographic changes have been a major force in bringing population and family issues on to the political agenda. The decline in fertility, the increase in divorce rates and lone-parenthood, and the entry of women into the labour force have all reduced the relevance of systems of state support aimed at traditional male breadwinner-housewife families, and in so doing have forced governments to reform the existing measures of family support. However, the exact nature of these reforms, and the ways family policy has evolved over time, differ considerably across countries.

Book Synopsis Remaking Canadian Social Policy by : Jane Pulkingham
Download or read book Remaking Canadian Social Policy written by Jane Pulkingham and published by Halifax, N.S. : Fernwood Pub.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the changing landscape of Canadian social policy that is taking place as a result of the Liberal government's Social Security Review (SSR) and recent budgets. The objective is to provide an alternative venue to the "official" consultation process of the SSR, while at the same time providing input into the rebuilding of Canadian social programs. Major factors that led to the SSR are examined: the role of the Minister of Finance, the fiscal power and moral authority of the federal state in a decentralized nation, globalization and labour market restructuring, the concept of workfare, the impact on women, the role of "popular sector" groups and the future of the welfare state.

Book Synopsis Bending the Cost Curve in Health Care by : Gregory P. Marchildon
Download or read book Bending the Cost Curve in Health Care written by Gregory P. Marchildon and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through Canadian and international perspectives, Bending the Cost Curve in Health Care explores the management of growing health costs in an extraordinarily complex arena. The book moves beyond previous debates, agreeing that while efficiencies and better value for money may yet be found, more fundamental reforms to the management and delivery of health services are essential prerequisites to bending the cost curve in the long run. While there is considerable controversy over direction and details of change, there also remains the challenge of getting agreement on the values or principles that would guide the reshaping of the policies, the structures, and the regulatory environment of health care in Canada. Leading experts from around the world representing a range of disciplines and professional backgrounds come together to organize and define the problems faced by policy-makers. Case studies from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Nordic countries, and industrialized Asian countries such as Taiwan offer useful reform experiences for provincial governments in Canada. Finally, common Canadian cost factors, such as pharmaceuticals and technology, and paying the health workforce, are explored. This book is the first volume in The Johnson-Shoyama Series on Public Policy, published by the University of Toronto Press in association with the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, an interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching, and executive training with campuses at the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan.
