Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discipline: The Canonical Buddhism of the Vinayapitaka is a penetrating analysis of a heretofore neglected, yet centrally important portion of the Pali Canon. In identifying the pivotal role of discipline in the bhikkhu quest for nibbana Professor Holt finds that Vinaya rules represent a practical implementation of the Budha's Dhamma. Specifically, adherence to this monastic code theoretically facilitates an overcoming of asavas, mental dispositions that foster attachment to the self and thus perpetuate the process of samsaric kammic retribution. The formulation of Buddhist monastic law, therefore, need not be seen as the result of casuistry; rather, it is the consequence of a conscious attempt on the part of the early Buddhist tradition to identify behavioral expressions that at once generate and reflect a calmed, detached and disciplined mental and spiritual state. The author has also examined the significance of the principal rituals of Buddhist monasticism as they are prescribed within the Vinaya text. He interprets these rites as cultic celebrations of discipline which, in turn, legitimate the Sangha's claim to be the embodiment and reservoir of the Buddha's teachings. The claim supported the Sangha's role of occupying a mediating position between the spiritual needs of the laity and the authority and the spiritual exemplar of Buddhism, the Buddha. In short, Discipline, written from the perspective of the history of religious approach, contributed significantly to the increased understanding of the dynamics of the Buddhist religion in its formulative stages.

In Mindful Discipline, internationally recognized mindfulness expert Shauna Shapiro and pediatrician Chris White weave together ancient wisdom and modern science to provide new perspectives on parenting and discipline. Grounded in mindfulness and neuroscience, this pioneering book redefines discipline and outlines the five essential elements necessary for children to thrive: unconditional love, space for children to be themselves, mentorship, healthy boundaries, and mis-takes that create learning and growth opportunities. In this book, you will also discover parenting practices such as setting limits with love, working with difficult emotions, and forgiveness and compassion meditations that place discipline within a context of mindfulness. This relationship-centered approach will restore your confidence as a parent and support your children in developing emotional intelligence, self-discipline, and resilience—qualities they need for living an authentic and meaningful life.

And indeed, the earliest Buddhist scriptures celebrate the teachings and inspiring influence of these path-blazing female renunciants. Nonetheless, through much of the Buddhist world, the order of nuns has disappeared or was never transmitted at all. Dignity & Discipline represents a watershed moment in Buddhist history, as the Dalai Lama together with scholars and monastics from around the world, present powerful cases, grounded in both scripture and a profound appeal to human dignity, that the order of Buddhist nuns can and should be fully restored.

Book excerpt: ‘Mind is the most complex phenomenon on earth, the most subtle flowering of consciousness. If you want to really understand what the mind is, then you will have to detach yourself from it and learn how to be just a witness.’ In Learning Happiness, Osho explains why Buddha insists that happiness does not have to be created. He says that perhaps the most fundamental truth that Buddha brought to the world is his penetrating insight into the essential nature of happiness. It already exists in the present moment—all that has to be learned is the knack of living in the present. Osho outlines and clarifies the three steps—Buddha’s carefully defined path to liberation—and talks about the transcendence of moving from sex to spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vinaya means Discipline. The monastic discipline, comprising about three thousand pages in printed text, whose rules and traditions ended up defining every particular aspect of the way of life of the bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs. The essence of the rules for the bhikkhus is contained in the Pātimokkha, the Ascetic Codes. The conjunction of the Dhamma with the Vinaya forms the core of the Buddha's doctrine, the "Dhamma-Vinaya", that is, the Teaching and the Discipline. The purpose of the Pātimokkha was to give a good image to the laity who were the ones who ultimately supported, sustained and maintained this community. In the beginning, not many rules were needed, the first bhikkhus were decent and responsible people and were under the control of the Buddha himself. However, the fame of the good life in the Sangha eventually became a magnet for bums, hustlers and scoundrels looking to live on the side, a tradition that has remained unchanged to this day. This avalanche of people led the Buddha to have to delegate the new ordinations to the bhikkhus themselves, which led to a myriad of conflicts that the Buddha dealt with by creating a battery of rules to control so many undesirables, so that they would not damage the image of the Sangha in general, essential for the laity to continue to maintain it. The rules did not apply to him, his friends or his family. The rules are exclusively to control the Sangha. For example, notorious murderers cannot be given renunciation, but the Buddha gives it to Aṅgulimāla, or exemption from the four months' probation for sakkās. It should be noted that it is not in any case about rules referring to the practice of liberation, which is collected in the suttas and is common to laymen, laywomen, bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs, but only and exclusively to maintain the harmony and the good image of a heterogeneous community, culturally located in its time and culture and spread in a subcontinent where history had not yet dawned. This first text, The Great Chapter of the Great Division, is fundamental to know the first years of the wheel of the Teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Zen teacher Cheri Huber, we are conditioned to think that if we were only a little better in some way, we would be happy: "Life isn't the way it should be and it's my fault!" But, Huber says, no amount of self-punishment will ever make us happy or bring us control over life’s problems. The help we are looking for is really found in self-acceptance and kindness toward ourselves. By simply allowing ourselves to be guided by our innate intelligence and generosity, which are our authentic nature, we are able to be compassionately present to what’s happening now. Compassionate self-discipline—the will to take positive steps in life—is found through nothing other than being present. When we are present and aware, we are not engaged in distracting, addictive behaviors. If we simply cultivate our ability to pay attention and focus on what is here in this moment, our experience can be authentic, awake, honest, and joyful. The book includes a guided thirty-day program of daily meditation, contemplation, and journaling. For more information on the author, Cheri Huber, visit her website at www.cherihuber.com.

Book excerpt: Designed as a conversation between the Dalai Lama and Western neuroscientists, this book takes readers on a journey through opposing fields of thought—showing that they may not be so opposing after all Is the mind an ephemeral side effect of the brain’s physical processes? Are there forms of consciousness so subtle that science has not yet identified them? How does consciousness happen? Organized by the Mind and Life Institute, this discussion addresses some of the most troublesome questions that have driven a wedge between Western science and religion. Edited by Zara Houshmand, Robert B. Livingston, and B. Alan Wallace, Where Buddhism Meets Neuroscience is the culmination of meetings between the Dalai Lama and a group of eminent neuroscientists and psychiatrists. The Dalai Lama’s incisive, open-minded approach both challenges and offers inspiration to Western scientists. This book was previously published under the title Consciousness at the Crossroads.
