Book excerpt: The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China contains the first complete translation of China’s earliest and most influential monastic code. The twelfth-century text Chanyuan qinggui (Rules of Purity for the Chan Monastery) provides a wealth of detail on all aspects of life in public Buddhist monasteries during the Sung (960–1279). Part One consists of Yifa’s overview of the development of monastic regulations in Chinese Buddhist history, a biography of the text’s author, and an analysis of the social and cultural context of premodern Chinese Buddhist monasticism. Of particular importance are the interconnections made between Chan traditions and the dual heritages of Chinese culture and Indian Buddhist Vinaya. Although much of the text’s source material is traced directly to the Vinayas and the works of the Vinaya advocate Daoan (312–385) and the Lü master Daoxuan (596–667), the Chanyuan qinggui includes elements foreign to the original Vinaya texts—elements incorporated from Chinese governmental policies and traditional Chinese etiquette. Following the translator’s overview is a complete translation of the text, extensively annotated.

These are some of the basic questions addressed in this book, the first introduction to Chinese Buddhism written expressly for students and those interested in an accessible yet authoritative overview of the subject based on current scholarship. After presenting the basic tenets of the Buddha’s teachings and the Chinese religious traditions, the book focuses on topics essential for understanding Chinese Buddhism: major scriptures, worship of buddhas and bodhisattvas, rituals and festivals, the monastic order, Buddhist schools such as Tiantai and Chan, Buddhism and gender, and current trends—notably humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan and the resurgence of Buddhism in post-Mao China. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and suggestions for further reading. A convenient glossary of common terms, titles, and names is included.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abstract of Four Lectures on Buddhist Literature in China: Delivered at University College, London IN the introduction to a work 1 published in the year 1 87 1 I called attention to the fact that we possessed at that time, in England at least, no complete set of the Buddhist Sacred Writings as they are known in China and Japan. These Sacred Writings, constituting what is called the Tripitaka, or three receptacles, had been printed at various times in China from wooden blocks, which were as often destroyed by fire or civil war. It is said that during the Sung and Yuan dynasties (ad. 960 - 1330) as many as twenty different editions had been produced, but during the troubles occurring towards the end of the Yuan period all these perished. During the Ming dynasty (a.d. 1360 - 1620) two editions, called the Southern and the Northern, were published, the latter of which was reproduced in I 586 by a priest called Mi-tsang, after twenty years' labour. This edition is known in Japan as the Ming tsong, or Tripitaka of the Ming dynasty. It is this copy of the Sacred Books that I requested His Excellency Iwakura Tomomi to procure for the India Office Library, and Which he so generously promised to do, in I 874. A similar request had been already made at Pekin, but the Chinese Government, jealously conservative, had declined to accede to it. We were fortunately able to look elsewhere; and in 1875 the entire Tripitaka was received at the India Office, in fulfilment of the promise made by the Japanese ambassador. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fusang or the Discovery of America by Chinese Buddhist Priests in the Fifth Century Possibility of passing by sea from the Chinese to the American coast, I have thought it appropriate to place next in the series a letter from Colonel Barclay Kennon, who, as a prominent officer in the United States Coast Survey, passed several years in the North Pacific, during which time he surveyed and mapped, in company with two colleagues, the entire coast, both on the Asiatic and American sides. Colonel Kennon is of opinion that the voyage supposed to have been taken by the Buddhist monks is easily practicable, and might be effected even'in an open boat - the vessel in which he himself passed both summer and winter, and in which he sailed more than miles, having been simply a small pilot-boat. To this I have added, in further reference to certain remarks by Professor Neu mann, a comment on the afiinities between American. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Esoteric Buddhism is generally held to have been established as a distinct and institutionalized Buddhist school in eighth-century China by “the Three Great Masters of Kaiyuan”: Śubhākarasiṃha, Vajrabodhi, and Amoghavajra. Geoffrey C. Goble provides an innovative account of the tradition’s emergence that sheds new light on the structures and traditions that shaped its institutionalization. Goble focuses on Amoghavajra (704–774), contending that he was the central figure in Esoteric Buddhism’s rapid rise in Tang dynasty China, and the other two “patriarchs” are known primarily through Amoghavajra’s teachings and writings. He presents the scriptural, mythological, and practical aspects of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism in the eighth century and places them in the historical contexts within which Amoghavajra operated. By telling the story of Amoghavajra’s rise to prominence and of Esoteric Buddhism’s corresponding institutionalization in China, Goble makes the case that the evolution of this tradition was predicated on Indic scriptures and practical norms rather than being the product of conscious adaptation to a Chinese cultural environment. He demonstrates that Esoteric Buddhism was employed by Chinese rulers to defeat military and political rivals. Based on close readings of a broad range of textual sources previously untapped by English-language scholarship, this book overturns many assumptions about the origins of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Chinese Translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka: The Sacred Canon of the Buddhists in China and Japan This is a complete Catalogue of the Chinese Translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka, the Sacred Canon of the Buddhists in China and Japan. It contains not only the titles of 1662 different works (of which 342, however, are miscellaneous works), but also the names of the authors and translators, together with their dates. The arrangement and classification of these works are the same as in the original Chinese Catalogue, i. E. N o. 1662. Notes taken from various sources are added under each title with their full references. A list of the principal authorities consulted by me will be found on p. Xxxii. Though I gladly and gratefully acknowledge the assistance received from my predecessors, there still remain such difficulties as were pointed out by the Rev. J. Summers in his Descriptive Catalogue of the Chinese, Japanese, and Manchu books in the Library of the India Office, 1872 (p. Iv), when he says 'the title of a [chinese] hook is often untranslatable; the author's name is frequently out of sight, and has to be sought for in some obscure corner or work; the date of the publication is alike often doubtful, and in the case of Buddhist Literature the identification of the Chinese title with the Sanskrit original is sufficiently troublesom This quotation will to a certain extent explain the imperfection of my own work, for which I have to crave the indulgence of those who may use it. My principal object in making this compilation has been to show the original, though it may be not quite scientific, arrangement Of this great Collection of our Sacred Canon, made in China under the Min dynasty, A. D. 1368 - 1644. A copy of the Japanese edition of this Chinese Collection, published in Japan in A. D. 1678 - 1681, is now in the Library of the India Office in London. 'it is this copy of the Sacred Books, ' says the Rev. S. Beal, that (in 1874) I requested His Excellency Iwakura Tomomi to procure for the India Ofiice Library. In 1875 the entire Tripitaka was received at the India Office, in fulfilment of the promise made by the Japanese Immediately after this, Mr. Beal prepared a Catalogue of the books for practical purposes which was completed in June 1876, within the time of six months 3.
