Book Synopsis Like a Shadow That Never Departs by : Randall K. Scott

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Like a shadow that does not depart” is the exciting biography of Ananda, Buddha’s attendant during the last 25 years of his life. In an age before writing, Ananda heard and memorized all of Buddha’s estimated 84,000 sermons and 15,000 stanzas without omitting a syllable. He also strongly advocated a Buddhist order of nuns, which Buddha approved. Although Ananda did not become enlightened until Buddha’s parinirvanization, he was de facto Chief-of-Staff for Buddha. Ananda scheduled Buddha’s appointments, so he exerted enormous power over who could see Buddha, even the senior enlightened arhats, who technically out-ranked Ananda. Ananda implemented important organizational changes in the sangha as it grew; thereby giving Buddha a planned, structured system for his travels and sermons. He was Buddha’s constant shadow. He ministered to Buddha’s needs. He set up Buddha’s camp when the sangha was traveling. He guarded Buddha with his ever-present staff. Ananda was one of Buddha’s pivotal disciples. Without his incredible photographic memory and methodical approach, it is questionable whether Buddhism would have grown into a major religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With all of the changes taking place in the world around us, the need for inner peace is greater than ever before. Learning to live in peace under all circumstances is the secret of a happy life. This powerful collection of spiritual writings will change your life by guiding you through inspiration and new perspectives for facing life’s challenges and finding peace within. Drawing from the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda (author of the classic Autobiography of a Yogi), Touch of Peace shares practical tools, instructive stories, and right attitudes to help you tap the wellsprings of peace inside you. “Who among us has not had to deal with his share of trials? It is worry, even more than the trial itself, that usually does damage to our peace and happiness,” said author, Nayaswami Jyotish. “Raising our consciousness is the true solution” he continues, for facing the battlefield of life—to keep us from sinking into our worries, so we may learn to overcome our trials. In their newest release, Touch of Peace, co-authors Nayaswami Jyotish and Nayaswami Devi, show us the way forward to a brighter future. Since the onset of the global tsunami of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting dramatic changes in people’s lives around the world, the passages within this book offer fresh perspective, practices, and ancient yoga teachings to help individuals deal with the special challenges we face. After the success of their first three books, Touch of Light, Touch of Joy, and Touch of Love, Nayaswami Jyotish and Devi offer a lifeline in a sea of uncertainty within each letter found in Touch of Peace. Based on their famous blog, A Touch of Light, this book is the compilation of profound and practical spiritual teachings faithfully shared in the spirit of their beloved guru, Paramhansa Yogananda and his direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda.

Book Synopsis Hinduism and Buddhism by : Ananda K. Coomaraswamy
Download or read book Hinduism and Buddhism written by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned Sri Lankan metaphysician presents his enlightening insight into the essential kinship between Hinduism and Buddhism. In this probing work, Ananda K. Coomaraswamy examines the foundational myths and spiritual underpinnings of Hinduism and Buddhism. Discarding the Western narrative of philosophical divergence, Coomaraswamy instead explores the essential unity between these two major religions. In his perspective, one is merely an outgrowth of the other. Dividing the book into two parts, Coomaraswamy begins each section with an overview of each religion’s foundational myths. The section on Hinduism then covers concepts such as karma, maya, reincarnation, sacrifice, and caste. In the section on Buddhism, he demonstrates that Buddha never intended to start a new religion, but to deepen the spiritual understanding of the existing one.

Download or read book Buddha and the Gospel of Buddhism written by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “THE aim of this book is to set forth as simply as possible the Gospel of Buddhism according to the Buddhist scriptures, and to consider the Buddhist systems in relation, on the one hand, to the Brahmanical systems in which they originate, and, on the other hand, to those systems of Christian mysticism which afford the nearest analogies. At the same time the endeavour has been made to illustrate the part which Buddhist thought has played in the whole development of Asiatic culture, and to suggest a part of the significance it may still possess for modern thinkers. “The way of the Buddha is not, indeed, concerned directly with the order of the world, for it calls on higher men to leave the marketplace. But the order of the world can only be established on a foundation of knowledge: every evil is ultimately traceable to ignorance. It is necessary, then, to recognize the world for what it truly is. Gautama teaches us that the marks of this life are imperfection, transcience, and the absence of any changeless individuality. He sets before us a summum bonum closely akin to the Christian mystic conception of ‘self-naughting.’ Here are definite statements which must be either true or false, and a clearly defined goal which we must either accept or refuse. If the statements be false, and if the goal be worthless, it is of the highest importance that the former should be refuted and the latter discredited. But if the diagnosis be correct and the aim worthy, it is at least of equal importance that this should be generally recognized: for we cannot wish to perpetuate as the basis of our sociology a view of life that is demonstrably false or a purpose demonstrably contrary to our conception of the good. “This book is designed, therefore, not as an addition to our already overburdened libraries of information, but as a definite contribution to the philosophy of life.”—Ananada K. Coomaraswamy
