Book excerpt: Thomas 'Buck' Whaley was one of the greatest adventurers in Irish history. In 1788 he made an extraordinary 10-month journey from Dublin to Jerusalem for a wager of £15,000, equivalent to several million today. Nearly shipwrecked in the Sea of Crete, he almost died of plague in Constantinople, narrowly avoided a pirate attack, was waylaid by bandits, and met an infamous Ottoman governor known as 'the Butcher'. On his return, he became an overnight celebrity before suffering a catastrophic series of gambling losses that exiled him first to continental Europe (where he attempted to rescue Louis XVI from the guillotine) and then to the Isle of Man. When he died aged 34 in 1800 he had squandered an astronomical £400,000 (around 100 million) 'without ever purchasing or acquiring contentment or one hour's true happiness'. In his lifetime, Ireland was about to erupt in rebellion; France was on the brink of bloody revolution; and the Ottoman Empire was creaking at the seams. Whaley lit up this volatile world like a fast-burning candle but retained his ability to recognise the absurdity of his own actions and the world around him. It shows how the Irish comic character—whether a blundering fool or a lazy, fun-loving fellow—evolved into a glib and witty rogue. The book is a critical study of modern Irish fiction and drama. The first part provides an analysis of the various Irish comic figures which were popular in the nineteenth century. These are discussed within a social and historic framework because they were to a large extent shaped by the erosion of Gaelic culture under the impact of English government. In the process of shifting from one cultural nexus to another, the Irishman came to be regarded as highly inferior to his English counterpart, yet amusing because of his difficulty with the English language and his rebellious, unpredictable behavior. Book excerpt: Born and brought up in England, George Augustus Chichester, second Marquis of Donegall, inherited from his father in 1799 one of the greatest landed estates in Ireland—nearly a quarter of a million acres. Since the new Lord Donegall had hitherto spent much of his time gambling on borrowed money, a host of creditors now looked for payment. Donegall disputed the legality of many of the claimes, however, and retreated to Belfast where he defied all efforts to make him pay in full. He was to live in Belfast for the rest of his life, becoming notorious as the Marquis of Done ‘em all. The story of his prodigal son who became a prodigal father is full of fascinating glimpses of the lower life of the upper classes of his time—a world of debtors’ prisons, chancy deals, and Chancery proceedings. Apart from this Donegall’s career is interesting also for the curious affair of his marriage. When his eldest son was about to get married in 1819, Donegall’s own marriage to Anna May was declared illegal, more than twenty years after it had taken place. This made their seven children illegitimate and deprived them of their inheritance. Only a retrospective change in the law of matrimony (brought about by the Donegall case) saved the family from ruin. At a local level, Donegall’s presence in the town and his insatiable need for cash had a considerable, if unintended, effect on the development of Belfast. By seriously undermining the Chichester family’s wealth and influence he opened the way for the citizens to take its place.
