Book excerpt: Why would a successful, twelve-year Secret Service agent resign his position in the prime of his career to run for political office against all the odds? How does the Washington DC “Bubble”—a haze of lobbyists, cronyists, staff, acolytes, consultants, and bureaucrats—surrounding the President distort his view of the world? Take the journey with Dan Bongino from the tough streets of New York City where he was raised, and later patrolled as a member of the NYPD, to the White House as a member of the elite Presidential Protective Division, through his ultimate decision to resign from the Secret Service in the prime of his career to run for the United States Senate against the feared Maryland Democratic machine. Follow his experiences inside the Washington DC “Bubble” and uncover why a government that includes the incredibly dedicated people he encountered while within it continues to make tragic mistakes. Learn how… • Bureaucratic laziness allows the NSA collection scandal to continue • The Department of Justice’s unwillingness to take on the tough cases allowed “Fast & Furious” to arm criminals • The Obama administration allowed US citizens to die in Benghazi in the worst dereliction of responsibility over security ever • The “Politics of Protection” leads to dangerous policies that weaken our country and cost American lives “A rare peak inside the DC ‘Bubble’ which should be a wake-up call to every American.” —Sean Hannity

Book excerpt: He was known around the world as the "Bubble Boy". Now told for the first time by the person who was his caretaker and confidant, Bursting the Bubble is the heart-rending story of the life and death of David Vetter. Due to the scientific zeal of doctors and religious authorities, and the compliance of his trusting family, he lived his life in a sterile chamber bereft of human touch from birth until a few days before his death at age 12 and a half. Mary Ada Murphy, Ph.D., was a child psychologist on staff at St. Luke's-Texas Children's Hospital throughout David Vetter's life and became his closest friend and confidant. She was with him when he died. She received the Hadassah Myrtle Wreath Award in 1985 in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the psychological support of David Vetter and his family. Raymond J. Lawrence, whom Murphy entrusted with the Bursting the Bubble manuscript and writes an introduction to it, was the hospital chaplain in place during David's early years, and who convened the only formal ethics consultation on the Vetter case.

Lao Tzu's statements of the Tao Te Ching came into being only at the end of his life. Mystics usually don't write books; they speak and work directly with people in a transformational way. In the same way, Osho's books are transcriptions of his daily talks. This book is a rare exception: 100 letters written by Osho and mailed to a disciple, Yoga Sohan, in connection with events during a meditation camp in which she participated. Osho promised her that he would send her a letter every day…and that she should keep them so they could be published one day. This unique selection of these letters contains Osho's very personal instructions and insights on a meditative life. In one he says, "That’s what meditation is all about – writing love letters to life." If you have come to the point where you feel there must be something more to life and are ready to explore other dimensions of being, this collection will provide an essential road map. The one hundred short passages in this book are full of diverse and pertinent gems. They will touch your heart and inspire you, showing you how to turn each and every moment of your life into a celebration.

Book excerpt: A captivating account of the NBA’s strangest season ever, from shutdown to championship, from a prominent national basketball writer living inside the bubble When NBA player Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020, the league shut down immediately, bringing a shocking, sudden pause to the season. As the pandemic raged, it looked as if it might be the first year in league history with no champion. But four months later, after meticulous planning, twenty-two teams resumed play in a "bubble" at Disney World-a restricted, single-site locale cut off from the outside world. Due to health concerns, the league invited only a handful of reporters, who were required to sacrifice medical privacy, live in a hotel room for more than three months, and submit to daily coronavirus testing in hopes of keeping the bubble from bursting. In exchange for the constant monitoring and restricted movement, they were allowed into a basketball fan's dream, with a courtside seat at dozens of games in nearly empty arenas. Ben Golliver, the national NBA writer for the The Washington Post, was one of those allowed access. Bubbleball is his account of the season and life inside, telling the story of how basketball bounced back from its shutdown, how players staged headline-grabbing social justice protests, and how Lakers star LeBron James chased his fourth ring in unconventional and unforgettable circumstances. Based on months of reporting in the exclusive, confined environment, this is an entertaining record of an extraordinary season.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonocrystallization of Fats will summarize the latest research efforts and discoveries in the relatively new area of sonocrystallization of edible lipids. Ultrasound has been used extensively in the past to induce the crystallization of molecules. Until recently, however, very little work has been done using power ultrasound to induce the crystallization of edible lipids and understand how the phenomena applies in these systems. Power ultrasound is used in fats to induce their crystallization and to generate small crystals, which ultimately result in a harder material. Since the elimination of trans-fats from food products, novel processing technologies have been sought to improve the functional properties of low saturated, no-trans lipids. Power ultrasound can be used as a new processing condition to modify the crystallization of fats and tailor their functional properties to specific food uses. This Springer Brief will describe recent research performed in the area of sonocrystallization of fats and the possible application in the food industry. An overview of ultrasound theories will be presented at the beginning of the book followed by a brief description of the uses of power ultrasound in the food industry. Description of recent research in the area of fat sonocrystallization and detailed information regarding the experimental conditions used, such as type of equipment and ultrasound settings, will be presented. The book will end with a description of the future trends in sonocrystallization of fats in the food industry.

Book excerpt: The bursting of the economic bubble in the 1990s shook the very foundation of the post-war economic 'miracle' and marked the beginning of a gradual shift in the environmental consciousness of the Japanese. Yet, it by no means removed consumption from the pivotal position it occupied within Japanese society. Consuming Life in Post-Bubble Japan argues that consumption in Japan today is no longer simply a component of everyday economic activities, but rather a reflection of a society guided by the 'logic of late capitalism'. The volume pins down the contradictory nature of the setting in which consuming occurs in Japan today: the veneration of material comfort and convenience on the one hand, and the new rhetoric of recycling and energy conservation on the other. Theoretical insights developed as part of an art-historical enquiry, such as notions of socially engaged art and its critique, offer a new paradigm for investigating this dilemma. By combining case studies analysing the production and consumption of contemporary art with ethnographic material related to ordinary commodities and shopping, this volume provides a novel, transdisciplinary approach to exploring how a 'society of consumers' operates in post-bubble Japan and how contemporary life is a 'consuming project'.

Book excerpt: How to design a world in which we rely less on stuff, and more on people. We're filling up the world with technology and devices, but we've lost sight of an important question: What is this stuff for? What value does it add to our lives? So asks author John Thackara in his new book, In the Bubble: Designing for a Complex World. These are tough questions for the pushers of technology to answer. Our economic system is centered on technology, so it would be no small matter if "tech" ceased to be an end-in-itself in our daily lives. Technology is not going to go away, but the time to discuss the end it will serve is before we deploy it, not after. We need to ask what purpose will be served by the broadband communications, smart materials, wearable computing, and connected appliances that we're unleashing upon the world. We need to ask what impact all this stuff will have on our daily lives. Who will look after it, and how? In the Bubble is about a world based less on stuff and more on people. Thackara describes a transformation that is taking place now—not in a remote science fiction future; it's not about, as he puts it, "the schlock of the new" but about radical innovation already emerging in daily life. We are regaining respect for what people can do that technology can't. In the Bubble describes services designed to help people carry out daily activities in new ways. Many of these services involve technology—ranging from body implants to wide-bodied jets. But objects and systems play a supporting role in a people-centered world. The design focus is on services, not things. And new principles—above all, lightness—inform the way these services are designed and used. At the heart of In the Bubble is a belief, informed by a wealth of real-world examples, that ethics and responsibility can inform design decisions without impeding social and technical innovation.

Book excerpt: Each person harbors a multitude of bubbles, pre- conceived either by the strokes of a friend's imagination or by the endless loops of their own thoughts. Every idea, every concept, every belief you have nurtured over the years has birthed a bubble of its own. These bubbles possess a unique characteristic they either burst on their own, require a gentle nudge from the wind, or a precise prick to pop. This book is ready with a needle of other perceptions to prick, if you allow. I shall let the good bubbles pass, the redundant bubbles wither and burst the unnecessary ones. Because, being imprisoned in the superfluous bubbles will make your life difficult, ruin your peace and choke you. This is what "POP YOUR BUBBLES" is all about offering a broader perspective, peeling away layers of thought so you can see the world through a different lens, just as I once did. I have observed, experienced, learnt, and now, I am here to impart this wisdom. It's not magic, I'll unveil the secret recipe and ignite magic within you, because I understand who you are."
