Book excerpt: "An investigation is undertaken into the nature of the bubble growth rate and heat transfer suppression in the flow boiling of binary mixtures. From an examination of the well established pool boiling theory available in the literature and a consideration of factors uniquely present in flow boiling situations, it is determined that the present pool boiling theories are roughly applicable for a finite initial interval of the bubble growth cycle during flow boiling. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that the suppression of the increase in heat transfer coefficient in binary fluids which occurs after the onset of nucleate boiling is related to the suppression in bubble growth rates. Experimental data of bubble growth rate and heat transfer coefficient for flow boiling of a binary mixture of ethylene glycol and water at various conditions is acquired, and tested relative to these conclusions. The results are in agreement within the experimental range of uncertainty."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we discuss the development of a new mass transfer model to simulate the thermal and phase change characteristics encountered by binary mixtures during a flow boiling process. The constructed boiling mass transfer model, based on detailed empirical analysis of the heat transfer coefficients pertinent to binary systems and fully implemented within the commercial computational fluid dynamics code AVL FIREĀ®, is exercised within a multi-fluid framework along with an interfacial area transport modeling procedure to study the heat and mass transfer characteristics of boiling flows inside a rectangular duct. Turbulence in the fluidic system and those generated by the bubbly flow are treated using an advanced k-?-f model. The simulation results, comprising of flow variables such as volume fraction, fluidic velocities, temperature and the resultant heat flux generated on the heated wall section, clearly monitors the suppression in heat transfer coefficients with enhancement in flow convection. Competing mechanisms such as phase change process and turbulent convection are identified to influence the heat transfer characteristics. In particular, the varying influence of the mass transfer effects on the heat flux characteristics with alteration in wall temperature is well demonstrated. For example, under low convection velocities, phase change dominates the heat removal from the wall with distinct bubbly flow activity in the boiling regions, while a considerable reduction in bubble dynamics and the phase change contribution towards heat removal with an increase in convection velocities can be clearly extracted. Comparisons of the predicted heat transfer coefficients for varying wall superheat and varying fluidic velocity indicate a very good agreement with experimental data wherever available. A description of the flow field inclusive of interfacial area and number density distribution is provided. The current model can be easily extended to simulate multi-phase flow in complex systems such as a cooling water jacket for automotive applications.

Book excerpt: Providing a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals and applications of flow and heat transfer in conventional and miniature systems, this fully enhanced and updated edition covers all the topics essential for graduate courses on two-phase flow, boiling, and condensation. Beginning with a concise review of single-phase flow fundamentals and interfacial phenomena, detailed and clear discussion is provided on a range of topics, including two-phase hydrodynamics and flow regimes, mathematical modeling of gas-liquid two-phase flows, pool and flow boiling, flow and boiling in mini and microchannels, external and internal-flow condensation with and without noncondensables, condensation in small flow passages, and two-phase choked flow. Numerous solved examples and end-of-chapter problems that include many common design problems likely to be encountered by students, make this an essential text for graduate students. With up-to-date detail on the most recent research trends and practical applications, it is also an ideal reference for professionals and researchers in mechanical, nuclear, and chemical engineering.

Results obtained from the different expanding microscale geometries are presented for comparison and addition to that, comparison with literatures is also performed. Finally, parametric studies are performed and presented in the brief. The findings from this study could help in understanding the complex microscale flow boiling behavior and aid in the design and implementation of reliable compact heat sinks for practical applications.
