Book Synopsis Use of the Bryophyte, Hygrohypnum Ochraceum, to Assess the Bioavailability and Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals from the Upper Arkansas River in Colorado by : Kevin W. Meyer
Download or read book Use of the Bryophyte, Hygrohypnum Ochraceum, to Assess the Bioavailability and Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals from the Upper Arkansas River in Colorado written by Kevin W. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bryophyte, Hygrohypmum ochraceum, was collected from Nate's Creek at the top of Owl Creek Pass near Gunnison, Colorado and reared at the University of Southern Colorado. The reared bryophytes were placed at 12 sites in the Arkansas River from near Leadville, Colorado downstream to Pueblo, Colorado for a total of ten days during the Fall of 2002. The exposed plants were digested and analyzed for cadmium, copper, iron, lead, manganese and zinc using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two water samples were collected over the ten-day period of exposure from all sites. The first sample was collected at the beginning of the ten-day run while the second sample was collected at the end of the ten-day run. The water samples were analyzed for Al, Cd, Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mg, Mn, Se and Zn using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission. Bioconcentration factors [concentration in the bryophyte tissue (ppm) divided by the concentration in the river water (ppm)] for Cd, Pb and Zn were as high as tens of thousands while bioconcentration factors for Cu, Fe and Mn were as high as hundreds of thousands. Direct and significant correlations between the metal in the bryophytes and the log of the metal in the Arkansas River water were found for zinc and cadmium but not found for iron, manganese, copper and lead. The r-squared value for zinc was equal to 0.824 and the r-squared value for cadmium was 0.673.

Book Synopsis Photosynthesis in Bryophytes and Early Land Plants by : David T. Hanson
Download or read book Photosynthesis in Bryophytes and Early Land Plants written by David T. Hanson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryophytes, which are important constituents of ecosystems globally and often dominate carbon and water dynamics at high latitudes and elevations, were also among the pioneers of terrestrial photosynthesis. Consequently, in addition to their present day ecological value, modern representatives of these groups contain the legacy of adaptations that led to the greening of Earth. This volume brings together experts on bryophyte photosynthesis whose research spans the genome and cell through whole plant and ecosystem function and combines that with historical perspectives on the role of algal, bryophyte and vascular plant ancestors on terrestrialization of the Earth. The eighteen well-illustrated chapters reveal unique physiological approaches to achieving carbon balance and dealing with environmental limitations and stresses that present an alternative, yet successful strategy for land plants.

Book excerpt: This book provides keys, descriptions and illustrations for about 850 species of liverworts and hornworts, in 148 genera and 47 families, of Colombia and Ecuador. The largest genera are Lejeunea (66 spp.), Plagiochila (65), Frullania (54), Radula (33), Metzgeria (33), Cololejeunea (32), Cheilolejeunea (30), Bazzania (26), Drepanolejeunea (25), Ceratolejeunea (18), Diplasiolejeunea (18), and Syzygiella (18). Classes, orders, families and genera are also described and the main features for recognition of the genera are briefly discussed. The introduction includes chapters on history of exploration, diversity and endemism, and classification. A glossary, bibliography and index to scientific names are also provided.
Book Synopsis Illustrated Moss Flora of Antarctica by : Ryszard Ochyra
Download or read book Illustrated Moss Flora of Antarctica written by Ryszard Ochyra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosses are a major component of the vegetation in ice-free coastal regions of Antarctica. They play an important role in the colonisation of ice-free terrain, accumulation of organic matter, release of organic exudates, and also provide a food and habitat resource for invertebrates. They serve as model organisms for physiological experiments designed to elucidate problems of plant cold tolerance and survival mechanisms and for monitoring biological responses to climate change. This Flora provides the first comprehensive description, with keys, of all known species and varieties of moss in the Antarctic biome. It has involved microscopic examination of around 10,000 specimens from Antarctica and, for comparison, from other continents. All species are illustrated by detailed line drawings, alongside information about their reproductive status, ecology, and distribution. This is an invaluable resource for bryologists worldwide, as well as to Antarctic botanists and other terrestrial biologists.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Bryophyta by : Rashid A.
Download or read book An Introduction to Bryophyta written by Rashid A. and published by Vikas Publishing House. This book was released on 1998 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This endeavour is aimed to be comprehensive and innovative. It covers the entire course of reading in Bryology. After a brief Introduction, there is an account of array of diversity and development of Bryophytes. In three chapters on Liverworts, Hornworts and Mosses, one can find an illustrated and concise account of all representative types. It is followed by comparative morphology. In two chapters on Gametophyte and Sporophyte are unravelled the elements of unity in diversity. Due emphasis has been given to experimental studies. In five chapters are traced the events of life cycle; Spore germination, Protonema differentiation and Gametophyte initiation, Sexuality and Sporophyte development, Regeneration, and Alternation of generations. Experimental studies a backbone of this book are not only interesting in a class room but informative to decipher different aspects of differentiation. Finally, there is food for thought in chapters on Cytogenetics and Evolution, and Origin and Fossil History. At the end is an extensive bibliography of old and new Literature, for further reading.
