Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian comes a brilliant, absorbing study of Thomas Jefferson’s campaign to save Virginia through education. By turns entertaining and tragic, this beautifully written history reveals the origins of a great university in the dilemmas of Virginia slavery. It offers an incisive portrait of Thomas Jefferson set against a social fabric of planters in decline, enslaved black families torn apart by sales, and a hair-trigger code of male honor. A man of “deft evasions” who was both courtly and withdrawn, Jefferson sought control of his family and state from his lofty perch at Monticello. Never quite the egalitarian we wish him to be, he advocated emancipation but shrank from implementing it, entrusting that reform to the next generation. Devoted to the education of his granddaughters, he nevertheless accepted their subordination in a masculine culture. During the revolution, he proposed to educate all white children in Virginia, but later in life he narrowed his goal to building an elite university. In 1819 Jefferson’s intensive drive for state support of a new university succeeded. His intention was a university to educate the sons of Virginia’s wealthy planters, lawyers, and merchants, who might then democratize the state and in time rid it of slavery. But the university’s students, having absorbed the traditional vices of the Virginia gentry, preferred to practice and defend them. Opening in 1825, the university nearly collapsed as unruly students abused one another, the enslaved servants, and the faculty. Jefferson’s hopes of developing an enlightened leadership for the state were disappointed, and Virginia hardened its commitment to slavery in the coming years. The university was born with the flaws of a slave society. Instead, it was Jefferson’s beloved granddaughters who carried forward his faith in education by becoming dedicated teachers of a new generation of women.

Tom discovers that the senior Senator he works for, along with the President of the United States, received contributions from the top Union leader of the American Federated Truckers' Union, effectively selling their souls to the Union. As payback for their contributions, they created a scheme to assist the Union. A victim of the scheme, Eric Wagner, a competitor with the Union, ultimately was forced to defend himself through an emotional trial. Tom Morgan innocently got involved in the scheme and learned the tough game of politics, thereby causing him to question his future career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three unforgettable novels from New York Times bestselling author Joy Fielding. Still Life Beautiful, happily married and the owner of a successful interior design business, Casey Marshall couldn't be more content with her life. Until a car slams into her at almost fifty miles an hour, breaking nearly every bone in her body, and plunging her into a coma. Lying in her hospital bed, Casey realizes that although she is unable to see or communicate, she can hear everything. She quickly discovers that her friends aren't necessarily the people she thought them to be—and that her accident might not have been an accident at all. As she struggles to break free from her living death, she begins to wonder if what lies ahead could be even worse. The Wild Zone It starts as a joke among two brothers and their friend, out for a night of partying at the Wild Zone. Who will be the first to seduce a mysterious-looking young woman drinking by herself at a corner table? The $100 bet is on for the trio—Jeff, a charismatic personal trainer; his half-brother Will, a Princeton grad student; and Tom, a recently discharged military man—and the game begins. What they don’t know is Suzy Bigelow’s innocent, girl-next-door looks hide some dangerous secrets, or that she has reasons of her own for luring an unsuspecting young lover close to her. Now, as a harmless wager takes on an explosive life of its own, it becomes frighteningly clear that there’s no going back once you’ve entered The Wild Zone. Now You See Her Fifty-year-old Marcy Taggart’s life is in shambles. Two years ago, her twenty-one-year-old daughter, Devon, perished in a canoeing accident. Now in Ireland, on what was originally intended to be a celebration of her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary—if, that is, her husband had not left her for another woman—Marcy thinks she sees Devon casually strolling past her on the sidewalk. So begins Marcy’s desperate search to find Devon, to find herself, and to find the disturbing truth that might, in the end, be her only salvation.

Book excerpt: As the oldest and favorite daughter of Thomas Jefferson, Martha "Patsy" Jefferson Randolph (1772-1836) was extremely well educated, traveled in the circles of presidents and aristocrats, and was known on two continents for her particular grace and sincerity. Yet, as mistress of a large household, she was not spared the tedium, frustration, and great sorrow that most women of her time faced. Though Patsy's name is familiar because of her famous father, Cynthia Kierner is the first historian to place Patsy at the center of her own story, taking readers into the largely ignored private spaces of the founding era. Randolph's life story reveals the privileges and limits of celebrity and shows that women were able to venture beyond their domestic roles in surprising ways. Following her mother's death, Patsy lived in Paris with her father and later served as hostess at the President's House and at Monticello. Her marriage to Thomas Mann Randolph, a member of Congress and governor of Virginia, was often troubled. She and her eleven children lived mostly at Monticello, greeting famous guests and debating issues ranging from a woman's place to slavery, religion, and democracy. And later, after her family's financial ruin, Patsy became a fixture in Washington society during Andrew Jackson's presidency. In this extraordinary biography, Kierner offers a unique look at American history from the perspective of this intelligent, tactfully assertive woman.

Thomas Jefferson Randolph, TJ's favorite grandson was a complicated man with a huge burden to carry on the legacy of his famous grandfather. Manor born like his father and his father's father, "Jefferson" was the executor of his grandfather's estate (including his private and public papers) resulting in the first publication of Jefferson's papers in 1829. You can purchase that first volume on LULU and I highly recommend you purchase that volume (VOLUME 1 of THOMAS JEFFERSON'S papers) and read this as the follow-up, since Thomas Jefferson Randolph produced, compiled and arranged for the publication of this remarkable volume.
