Book excerpt: This book depicts the life story of a woman who has loved the Lord throughout her lifetime in spite of the many challenges she has faced through the years. The untimely death of her husband was the most challenging of them all. Life happens to all of us, but how we react to life is what makes the difference. Nothing can happen to a child of God except God allows it: and if he allows it, then its for a purpose. Be encouraged through her experiences to put your trust in the Lord in every situation, and He will always bring you out victoriously. There is nothing too hard for Him!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education Council Act of 1991 established the National Education Commission on Time and Learning as an independent advisory body and called for a comprehensive review of the relationship between time and learning in U.S. schools. This document serves as a supplementary volume to the commission's first report released in May 1994, which found that most school-reform designs are structurally flawed by their adherence to a traditional school calendar. This volume describes innovative approaches to the use of school time. It provides nearly 40 examples of exemplary efforts to make better use of available time and extend the amount of time students spend learning. The brief program descriptions are from 15 elementary schools, 15 middle and senior high schools, 4 districtwide efforts, and 6 special programs. They include public and private schools in rural, urban, and suburban areas from 26 states. Information for reaching contact persons is provided. A review of the programs indicates that many different kinds of schools and districts have already implemented many of the commission's recommendations. The most common approaches in descending order include: (1) redesigning available time; (2) employing technology; (3) extending the school day or year; (4) providing time for professional development; and (5) providing support services for children or families. Finally, the approaches to the redesign of time usage differ by school level. (LMI)

Topics covered in this issue include different approaches to character education in the classroom (e.g., using literature, narrative writing), how teachers promote character education, and how coaches may promote character development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a two-book developmental reading series, Steps emphasizes the idea of reading as a three-step process in a "prepare-read-respond" strategy, stressing the importance of pre-reading preparing to read. This book offers more assistance to students with the pre-reading step than other texts. Steps reinforces the prepare step with pre-reading questions prior to each reading selection. Reading passages cover a broad range of topics that will interest students and be relevant to their college work. Chapters contain numerous short pieces for illustration and practice and move to longer pieces for more sustained reading. However, because the book is designed for the more basic course, the readings are always of a manageable length for students. Steps differs from its more advanced companion text, The Reading Context, by providing shorter and simpler explanations of key concepts; by using more visuals to accommodate alternate learning styles; by providing more vocabulary work; by covering reading rates; and by using simpler readings. In addition, Steps offers more help with reading textbook material and provides full chapters on understanding the difference between specific and general statements, understanding implied ideas, reading graphics, and responding to expressive and persuasive writing.
