Book excerpt: In a world full of images, sometimes you have to ask yourself what are some parts in my life that I do not like. Some parts of me that I am only carrying around because of my up-bringing, or maybe some pain that I caused to myself or pain that someone else caused in my life. Now I am stuck in this image that I didn’t even ask for. In the beginning of the bible (Genesis 1:26) exact he said, ‘’Let us make man in Our Image, according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So my question is how did we get here? If we have power over everything including ourselves, how did we end up broken, lost, hurt, trustless, bound, evil hearted, fake, and loveless. Somewhere along the way of life we have all lost our image on who we truly are and who we are meant to be. Most of us will find our way back, but a lot of us will not. That’s not even the scary part. The fact that we continue to create generation after generation after generations with the same broken images all over again now that’s scary. Today is the day that I believe every person that tunes into this book will realize that I may not be broken like them but I am going to recognize from now on the fruits that I bear. Please don’t get me wrong, I know you may be thinking that all images aren’t bad or broken and that is correct. Some images are sweet, kind and giving, aren’t broken at all. Which is amazing, but think about all the images around you, people that you know, your very own people and not once have you told them about who GOD said they were supposed to be. This book is based on three very different characters they are not the same, but all carry around a image because of their past. I pray you enjoy, and I pray that you will understand that GOD created a whole different image for us, so why settle for less. -Three Women-Three Images-Three twist-One Story-GOD just don’t want to save us ;He wants to transform us. Book Synopsis Quotation and Modern American Poetry by : Elizabeth Gregory
Download or read book Quotation and Modern American Poetry written by Elizabeth Gregory and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1996-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Elizabeth Gregory addresses a number of key issues surrounding the formation of the American poetic canon. Taking as her primary examples T. S. Eliot's Waste Land, William Carlos Williams' Paterson, and selected poems by Marianne Moore, she examines the ways in which modern American writers struggled with questions of literary authority and cultural identity in relation to pre-existing European models. Gregory focuses on these issues through analysis of the use of quotation in modern and postmodern literature, a practice that was strikingly divergent from the accepted use of literary allusion. Her introduction traces a history of quotation as it has been practiced in literature from classical to modern times. She then focuses on the texts of Eliot, Williams, and Moore--three central figures of American modernism whose work the author believes represents a spectrum of responses to the established European model of poetical discourse. Gregory's selection of Moore also allows her to deal with feminist concerns as they emerge in the more general modernist dialogue. How was a female writer to make use of a literary canon that traditionally excluded female participation? "The implications of Gregory's argument . . . will surely be of especial interest to feminist scholars of American poetry."--Lois Parkinson Zamora, University of Houston.

Book Synopsis Broken Idols of the English Reformation by : Margaret Aston
Download or read book Broken Idols of the English Reformation written by Margaret Aston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were so many religious images and objects broken and damaged in the course of the Reformation? Margaret Aston's magisterial new book charts the conflicting imperatives of destruction and rebuilding throughout the English Reformation from the desecration of images, rails and screens to bells, organs and stained glass windows. She explores the motivations of those who smashed images of the crucifixion in stained glass windows and who pulled down crosses and defaced symbols of the Trinity. She shows that destruction was part of a methodology of religious revolution designed to change people as well as places and to forge in the long term new generations of new believers. Beyond blanked walls and whited windows were beliefs and minds impregnated by new modes of religious learning. Idol-breaking with its emphasis on the treacheries of images fundamentally transformed not only Anglican ways of worship but also of seeing, hearing and remembering.
Book Synopsis Judaism and the Visual Image by : Melissa Raphael
Download or read book Judaism and the Visual Image written by Melissa Raphael and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread assumption that Jewish religious tradition is mediated through words, not pictures, has left Jewish art with no significant role to play in Jewish theology and ethics. Judaism and the Visual Image argues for a Jewish theology of image that, among other things, helps us re-read the creation story in Genesis 1 and to question why images of Jewish women as religious subjects appear to be doubly suppressed by the Second Commandment, when images of observant male Jews have become legitimate, even iconic, representations of Jewish holiness. Raphael further suggests that 'devout beholding' of images of the Holocaust is a corrective to post-Holocaust theologies of divine absence from suffering that are infused by a sub-theological aesthetic of the sublime. Raphael concludes by proposing that the relationship between God and Israel composes itself into a unitary dance or moving image by which each generation participates in a processive revelation that is itself the ultimate work of Jewish art.
