Simon Critchley argues that we must see Being and Time as a radicalization of Husserl's phenomenology, particularly his theories of intentionality, categorial intuition, and the phenomenological concept of the a priori. This leads to a reappraisal and defense of Heidegger's conception of phenomenology. In contrast, Reiner Schürmann urges us to read Heidegger 'backward', arguing that his later work is the key to unravelling Being and Time. Through a close reading of Being and Time Schürmann demonstrates that this work is ultimately aporetic because the notion of Being elaborated in his later work is already at play within it. This latest work in the Reiner Schürmann Selected Writings and Lecture Notes series aims to carry out Heidegger's plan. The destruction, or, as it is later called, the deconstruction of metaphysics, has a negative side--the peeling off, or the archeology, of metaphysical history by means of the guiding thread of the question of Being--and a positive side--"retrieval" of the original experience of Being in ancient Greek philosophy. "The destruction has no other intent than to win back the original experience of metaphysics through a deconstruction of those conceptions which have become current and empty." The purpose of taking to pieces the fabric of Western metaphysics is to show how at each important stage "the question of the meaning of Being has not only remained unattended to or inadequately raised, but that it has become quite forgotten in spite of all our interest in 'metaphysics'."

The book navigates the work of thinkers who have addressed such metaphysical concerns, including Martin Heidegger, Emmanuel Levinas, Jean-Luc Nancy, Jean-Luc Marion, Peter Sloterdijk, Ludwig Binswanger, Jacques Derrida, and more recently John D. Book excerpt: Eschatology is generally understood to be the doctrine of last things, but understood rigorously eschatology actually speaks of the inauguration of a new, redeemed world to come and of the coming of God himself. To speak of eschatology in this way is to speak of the very possibility of the future in the radical sense, the future that is not a mere attenuated variation of presence. Eschatology speaks of a coming that comes only to pass away into a past; rather it speaks of the coming of the Holy itself, which is the very origin of time and is thus the event par excellence. This book attempts to make manifest the question that eschatology itself poses: that eschaton has something essential to do with the beginning. This work intervenes in contemporary debates on "postsecularism" and "the return to religion." By introducing the question of eschatology anew, this book reintroduces the problem of transcendence that effectively calls into question the logic of sovereign power and rethinks the place of ''religion'' as an affirmation of what lies beyond, which does not function as the legitimizing principle of sovereignty in today's world of mass consumption.

It remains focused on and situated between natality and mortality, the ultimate traits that condition human life. This book traces the contours of Schurmann's thinking in his magnum opus BROKEN HEGEMONIES in order to uncover the possibility of a politics that resists the hegemonic tendency to posit principles that set the world and our relationships with one another into violent order. Long's book follows in the footsteps of Oedipus who, in abject recognition of his finitude, stumbles upon the possibility of another politics with the help of his daughters at Colonus. The path toward this other, collaboratively created and thus poetic politics begins with an encounter with Aristotle, a thinker whom Schurmann most frequently read as the founder of hegemonic metaphysics, but whose thinking reveals itself as alive to beginnings in ways that open new possibility for human community. This return to beginnings leads, in turn, to Plotinus, who Schurmann reads as marking the destitution of the ancient hegemony of the Parmenidean principle of the One. By bringing Schurmann's innovative and compelling reading of Rene Char's poem, "The Shark and the Gull," into dialogue with Plotinus we come to encounter the power of symbols to transform reality and open us to new constellations of possible community. In Plotinus, where we expected to encounter an end, we experience a new way of thinking natality in terms of what comes to language in Char as the nuptial. Having thus been awakened to the power of symbols, we are prepared to experience how in Kant being itself comes to expression as plurivocal in a way that reveals just how pathologically delusional it is to attempt to deploy univocal principles in a plurivocal world. This opens us to what Schurmann calls the "singularization to come," a formulation that gestures to a mode of comportment at home in the ravaged site between natality and mortality. This then returns us to Oedipus at Colonus; but not to him alone. Rather, it points to the relationship that emerges for a time between Antigone, Ismene, and Oedipus, as they navigate a way between their exile from Thebes and Oedipus's final resting place near Athens. Here, having been awakened to the power of a poetic politics, we attend to three symbolic moments of touching between Oedipus and his daughters through which we might discern something of the new possibilities a poetic politics opens for us if we settle into the ravaged site that conditions our existence, together.

The Place of the Symbolic gathers Reiner Schürmann's essays on the nexus of art and politics. In keeping with his translation of the destruction of metaphysics into an anarchic philosophy of practice, Schürmann develops a radical theory of the place of symbols, irreducible either to idealist theories of symbols or structuralist accounts of the symbolic. Symbols, Schürmann argues, may provide a bridge between ontological difference and politics. They resist being grasped metaphysically, in terms of representation. Instead, their understanding requires a specific way of existence: attending to the coming-to-presence of phenomena. As such, the understanding of symbols discloses a form of praxis that abandons ultimate grounds and opens onto the manifold. Alongside Schürmann's theory of symbols, the collection includes essays on the relation between metaphysics, tragedy, and technology; on the "there is" in poetry; as well as on judgment. Throughout these characteristically lucid interventions, Schürmann's most urgent concern remains a consideration of singular and finite practices that enact a release from universal principles. Art and politics appear here as the unworking of ultimate grounds; that is, as practices attuned to a truly groundless form of life.
