Book excerpt: Whatever one does throughout his or her life is hard to be defined as good or bad as it appears to be, or how much impact it had on anything, in a sense that it will be remembered and appreciated. It has been said that whatever one’s life had left behind is worthwhile, but ironically most people don’t leave anything behind themselves. Therefore are they less valuable than others? There are also people that leave too much behind themselves, and that is not necessary in a good way. History is full of manmade disasters, pain, and suff ering. Most people that sacrifice everything in life for a moment of happiness for themselves or others do not even think of fame or gratitude, they just think that was the right thing to do. This book is about my life experience; it is also about the human sacrifice, the life as we know it, and about the tens of thousands of people that lived similar experiences but not necessarily with the same outcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrick Leigh Fermor recounts the last leg of his epic walk across Europe as he makes his way through Bulgaria, Romania, and finally Greece. In the winter of 1933, eighteen-year-old Patrick (“Paddy”) Leigh Fermor set out on a walk across Europe, starting in Holland and ending in Constantinople, a trip that took him almost a year. Decades later, Leigh Fermor told the story of that life-changing journey in A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water, two books now celebrated as among the most vivid, absorbing, and beautifully written travel books of all time. The Broken Road is the long-awaited account of the final leg of his youthful adventure that Leigh Fermor promised but was unable to finish before his death in 2011. Assembled from Leigh Fermor’s manuscripts by his prizewinning biographer Artemis Cooper and the travel writer Colin Thubron, this is perhaps the most personal of all Leigh Fermor’s books, catching up with young Paddy in the fall of 1934 and following him through Bulgaria and Romania to the coast of the Black Sea. Days and nights on the road, spectacular landscapes and uncanny cities, friendships lost and found, leading the high life in Bucharest or camping out with fishermen and shepherds–in the The Broken Road such incidents and escapades are described with all the linguistic bravura, odd and astonishing learning, and overflowing exuberance that Leigh Fermor is famous for, but also with a melancholy awareness of the passage of time, especially when he meditates on the scarred history of the Balkans or on his troubled relations with his father. The book ends, perfectly, with Paddy’s arrival in Greece, the country he would fall in love with and fight for. Throughout it we can still hear the ringing voice of an irrepressible young man embarking on a life of adventure.

Book excerpt: It is 1852 and Alexander, a young biographer in search of the truth about William Blake, has parted from his new bride and travelled to the village of Felpham. For it was here that the scene of Blake's darkest hour – the mysterious incident that caused him to be tried for Sedition – occurred. But the villagers hereabouts don't have much to say on the subject, and go strangely quiet whenever the trial is mentioned. We travel back to 1800, when William Blake and his faithful wife Catherine have just moved to Felpham to take up the promise of work under a new patron, William Hayley Esquire. This tireless taskmaster soon gives Blake so much work that his own poetry is neglected. Trying to appease his patron and still find time for his masterpiece frays Blake's nerves beyond endurance. Witnessing this exchange are Betsy and Johnnie, two young lovers employed in Mr Hayley's service. In awe of Blake's beautiful engravings and glorious paintings, Betsy enlists Johnnie to teach her to read so that she can experience Blake's poetry too. The happiness Betsy finds in Blake's words and Johnnie's arms is short lived, for the terror of invasion by Napoleon is a constant dark cloud on the horizon. When invasion looks imminent, soldiers flood the quiet town with their bright red uniforms and arrogant, drunken behaviour. Now is the time that the villagers must come together to defend William from heinous accusations that, if proved, will lead to prison or worse. But will they have the courage? And will Alexander, fifty years after the event, discover what truly went on at the trial? In Gates of Paradise, first published in 2006, Beryl Kingston vividly re-imagines the historical events which led to William Blake's trial for sedition in 1803.

Book excerpt: The Bible is clear in its teaching that God's purpose in salvation is more than just the forgiveness of sins and a home in heaven at the end of this life. And yet the majority of God's people do not enjoy the blessings, joy, victory and fruitfulness which God intends for them to have in this life. The real need of the hour is for the people of God to realize the purpose for which God saved them and to begin to live in the reality of that purpose. This book was written with the prayer and desire that our blessed Lord will use it for His glory to enable His people to enjoy all that He has provided for them. Dr. Ernest Childs was saved at the age of 29. Soon after his conversion he went to work for his Lord, preaching and teaching the Word in young people's meetings, rescue missions and anywhere else he could get an audience. He has spent over twenty years in the pastorate, founding two churches and pastoring one other. During that time he has authored a number of books, booklets and tracts, established three home mission boards, carried on a weekly radio broadcast for ten years; founded a Christian school and an evening Bible Institute, and preached in most of the states east of the Mississippi in Bible Conferences and revivals. He has served at Ambassador Baptist College since its founding as Professor of Bible and Systematic Theology. In addition to his teaching duties, he also served as Academic Dean for eight years.

All the chapters have been sophisticatedly designed and revised by international experts to achieve wide but in-depth coverage.
