They investigate both the performance of unicast traffic in the presence of broadcast traffic, and the performance of broadcast traffic when mixed with unicast traffic, which is different from previous investigations reported in the literature in which broadcast traffic was investigated in isolation. Through extensive simulation experiments with three Medium Access Control (MAC) schemes, they show that throughput and delay can vary widely even in networks in which nodes are uniformly distributed. They also show that the use of a MAC protocol that utilizes directional antennas can help to improve the performance of broadcast traffic in ad hoc networks, in terms of both throughput and delay, through a more aggressive channel access scheme that maximizes spatial reuse.

Book excerpt: An ad hoc network is a dynamic network formed on demand by a group of nodes without the aid of any pre-existing network infrastructure. An efficient and effective medium access control (MAC) protocol which regulates nodes access to the shared channel(s) is essential in an ad hoc network. Our work is focused on the throughput and fairness properties of existing omni-directional MAC protocols as well as enhancement of their performance with directional antennas via both analytical and simulation approaches. In the first part, we present the first analytical modeling of collision avoidance MAC protocols including the popular IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in multi-hop ad hoc networks. We show that in ad hoc networks with a lot of hidden terminals, collision avoidance even if done correctly, can still limit achievable throughput significantly because of the much reduced spatial reuse. Then we advance the analytical modeling to evaluate those MAC protocols which use directional antennas and can achieve much higher throughput through directing transmissions and receptions to desired directions only. We show that the gain in spatial reuse outweighs that of collision avoidance and hence an aggressive all-directional scheme is more advantageous than other hybrid schemes that take conservative (or unnecessary) tradeoff between collision avoidance and spatial reuse. All the analytical work has provided very useful insight on the interaction between spatial reuse, interference reduction and collision avoidance that previous work lacked.

Book excerpt: A large portion of the network capacity of an ad hoc network can be wasted by the medium access mechanisms of omni-directional antennas. To overcome this problem, researchers propose the use of directional or adaptive antennas that largely reduce radio interference, improving the utilization of wireless medium and the resulting network throughput.

Book excerpt: In order to fully exploit the benefits of directional communication at upper layers, it is of paramount importance to investigate the issues related to directional broadcasting. Directional antennas offer an increased spatial reuse and a larger coverage range as transmitted power is concentrated in a small angular region. However, in a switched single beam antenna model broadcasting is achieved by sequentially steering the antenna beam across all pre-defined directions resulting in a sweeping delay. In this thesis we study suggested techniques to alleviate broadcast storm problems in ad hoc networks, point out their shortcomings, and propose two new schemes, namely, the New Enhanced Directional Flooding (NEDF) and the Probabilistic Relay Broadcasting (PRB). We thoroughly compare the performance of these protocols with present directional broadcast schemes including omni directional flooding over six, twelve and eighteen antenna beam models. The results indicate that directional broadcasting provides excellent connectivity in the regions of sparse density as compared to omni directional broadcasting. Finally, the proposed schemes are shown to outperform the existing schemes with respect to connectivity, latency and redundancy over a wide spectrum of network topologies and node densities.

Such networks consist of a set of nodes equipped with wireless interfaces and they are designed to form self-organizing and spontaneous networks. They are usually multi-hop in nature, collectively forwarding and processing data to accomplish an application task. In addition, their topologies can be highly dynamic due to the potential mobility of the nodes. All these properties, in isolation and combination, pose a plethora of research challenges as well as new application opportunities. The International Conference on Ad-Hoc Networks and Wireless (ADHOC-NOW) serves as one of the premier venues for researchers and industrial practitioners to exchange ideas in this exciting area. Following previous ADHOC-NOW conferences in Murcia, Spain (2009), Sophia Antipolis, France (2008), Morelia, Mexico (2007), Ottawa, Canada (2006), Cancun, Mexico (2005), Vancouver, Canada (2004), Mo- real, Canada (2003), and Toronto, Canada (2002), the ninth ADHOC-NOW conf- ence took place at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, during August 20–22, 2010. As the capital city of the Province of Alberta, Edmonton is a cultural, governmental, and educational center and offers year-round world-class f- tivals, including the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. Edmonton is also home to North America's largest indoor shopping mall, the West Edmonton Mall. The summer in Edmonton is particularly joyful and has mild temperature and long, sunny daytime.

Book excerpt: Mobile ad hoc network has been widely deployed in support of the communications in hostile environment without conventional networking infrastructure, especially in the environments with critical conditions such as emergency rescue activities in burning building or earth quick evacuation. However, most of the existing ad hoc based broadcasting schemes either rely on GPS location or topology information or angle-of-arrival (AoA) calculation or combination of some or all to achieve high reachability. Therefore, these broadcasting schemes cannot be directly used in critical environments such as battlefield, sensor networks and natural disasters due to lack of node location and topology information in such critical environments. This research work first begins by analyzing the broadcast coverage problem and node displacement form ideal locations problem in ad hoc networks using theoretical analysis. Then, this research work proposes an efficient broadcast relaying scheme, called Random Directional Broadcasting Relay (RDBR), which greatly reduces the number of retransmitting nodes and end-to-end delay while achieving high reachability. This is done by selecting a subset of neighboring nodes to relay the packet using directional antennas without relying on node location, network topology and complex angle-of-arrival (AoA) calculations. To further improve the performance of the RDBR scheme in complex environments with high node density, high node mobility and high traffic rate, an improved RDBR scheme is proposed. The improved RDBR scheme utilizes the concept of gaps between neighboring sectors to minimize the overlap between selected relaying nodes in high density environments. The concept of gaps greatly reduces both contention and collision and at the same time achieves high reachability. The performance of the proposed RDBR schemes has been evaluated by comparing them against flooding and Distance-based schemes. Simulation results show that both proposed RDBR schemes achieve high reachability while reducing the number of retransmitting nodes and end-to-end delay especially in high density environments. Furthermore, the improved RDBR scheme achieves better performance than RDBR in high density and high traffic environment in terms of reachability, end-to-end delay and the number of retransmitting nodes.

Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks have very unique features, such as dynamic topologies, relatively limited bandwidth and wireless signal propagation schemes, which present difficult challenges for wireless communication. We propose control mechanisms for channel access scheduling and topology control in ad hoc networks, respectively, which utilize the neighborhood information within two hops to cope with the difficulties of communicating in ad hoc networks. First, we present the neighbor-aware contention resolution (NCR) algorithm, and analyze its generic performance with regard to the contention delay and system throughput. The required neighbor information in NCR for ad hoc networks is acquired through the neighbor protocol, which is based on a random channel access mechanism and a reliable message propagation scheme using retransmissions. Then, four channel access protocols based on NCR are presented, namely NAMA, LAMA, PAMA and HAMA, which correspond to node-, link-, pair- wise- and hybrid-activation multiple access protocols, respectively. These protocols are aimed at ad hoc networks with omnidirectional antennas, and their performance is analyzed. Furthermore, channel access protocols, adapted from NAMA and PAMA, are considered for heterogeneous ad hoc networks that include unidirectional links, which may occur due to power and signal propagation differences between wireless stations.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the performance of directional collision avoidance schemes, in which antenna systems are used to direct the transmission and reception of control and data packets in channel access protocols based on four-way handshakes to try to avoid collisions. The first analytical model to consider directional reception and the possible difference in gain between omni-directional and directional transmissions is presented. Analytical results show that, when the directional collision avoidance scheme in which all transmissions are directional is augmented with directional receiving, one-hop throughput does not decrease due to the increased spatial reuse, even when the number of competing nodes within a region increases. It is also shown that, as expected, the performance of directional collision avoidance schemes degrades when directional transmissions have much higher gain than omni-directional transmissions. However, this degradation is relatively small. Simulations of the IEEE 802.11 protocol and its directional variants validate the results predicted in the analysis. The simulation results also show that the presence of broadcast traffic does not degrade the performance of the all-directional collision avoidance scheme significantly, even for relatively large percentages of broadcast traffic. The performance results of this study indicate that the most attractive collision avoidance approach consists of using directional transmissions of control and data packets, together with the directional reception of packets whenever a node is expecting a particular packet. Given the high tolerance to broadcast traffic of directional collision avoidance schemes, it is argued that the periodic transmission of beacons omni-directionally suffices to provide such schemes with the relative location of neighboring nodes.

Book excerpt: The wireless networking environment presents formidable challenges to the study of broadcasting (one-to-all) and multicasting (one-to-many) problems, especially when energy-aware operation is required. To address the specific problem of energy-aware tree construction in wireless ad hoc networks, we have developed the Broadcast Incremental Power (BIP) and Multicast Incremental Power (MIP) algorithms. Our algorithms are based on a crosslayering approach in which tree structure and communication range are chosen jointly. We describe the similarities and differences between energy-limited and energy-efficient modes of operation, and we illustrate the impact of these overlapping (and sometimes conflicting) considerations on network operation. Examples of energy-limited applications include sensor networks and military networks in which soldiers batteries cannot be recharged during a mission. When such constraints are present, fundamental objectives include the maximization of a network's useful lifetime and the maximization of traffic volume that is delivered during this lifetime. Additionally, we extend our model to exploit the properties of directional antennas to obtain further performance improvement.
