Beginning in the ninth century, scholars have proposed a succession of theories about Breton origins, influenced by the changing relationships between Brittany, its Continental neighbours, and the 'Atlantic Archipelago' during and after the Viking age and the Norman Conquest. However, due to limited records, the history of medieval Brittany remains a relatively neglected area of research. In this new volume, the authors draw on specialised research in the history of language and literature, archaeology, and the cult of saints, to tease apart the layers of myth and historical record. Brittany retained a distinctive character within the typical 'medieval' forces of kingship, lordship, and ecclesiastical hierarchy. Book excerpt: An investigation of the sources indicated that imperial Roman and patristic texts depict Britain, Ireland and their adjacent islands as an oceanic archipelago at the north-western limits of habitable reality. Graeco-Roman authorities associate the archipelago with mythological islands lying beyond those limits and invest it with immense symbolic significance. Imperial sources proclaim Roman authority over the entire Insular world and its surrounding seas. They connect victory over the archipelago with triumph over the other ends of the earth in a demonstration of Rome's global dominion. Poets and historians magnify Rome's achievements in the archipelago by emphasising the barbarism of its British, Irish and Pictish inhabitants and the terrors of its ocean. They also emphasise the savagery of Bede's Germanic ancestors, the Continental Saxons. The thesis finds that patristic authorities engage in the appropriation and subversion of these ideas and images. Some make rhetorical use of Britain to prove God's care for Rome and the universality of its rule. Others minimize Roman power in the archipelago, insisting that Christ alone rules the ends of the earth and the whole world and tames the barbarians. The Fathers give the archipelago's conversion an eschatological dimension, arguing that it fulfils scriptural prophesies concerning the last days and prepares the way for the Christ's return. The thesis also finds that early Insular sources make selective use of these imperial and patristic themes and further develop ideas concerning the archipelago's place in salvation history. Writing in post Roman Britain, Gildas imitates Roman models in his presentation of the island's geographical location and its symbolic resonance. He portrays the indigenous Britons as God's chosen people in the archipelago and presents himself as the successor of the prophets. Although ambiguous in his attitude towards Rome rule in Britain, he views the Irish, Picts and Saxons from the perspective of Christianised romanitas and interprets their assault on the island as divine vengeance for British sins, which he parallels with Jewish sinfulness in scriptural history. His objective in writing the De Excidio is the Britons' spiritual regeneration, and he employs his historical narrative to rouse them to repentance. The thesis concludes that Bede presents an alternative and inclusive vision of the archipelago's history in Book 1 of the Historia Ecclesiastica. He looks at Britain within the context of the Christian archipelago as a whole and in Book 1's first chapter - a chapter which sets the tone for the entire work - presents the English, Irish, Britons and Picts as members of the new Chosen People, the universal Christian church.
