Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive bibliography and exhibition chronology of the world's greatest museum of the decorative arts and design. The Victoria and Albert Museum, or South Kensington Museum as it used to be known, was founded by the British Government in 1852, out of the proceeds from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Like the Exhibition, it aimed to improve the expertise of designers, and the taste of the public, by exposing them to examples of good design from all countries and periods. 2,500 publications have to date been produced by, for, or in association with the V&A. The National Art Library, which is part of the Museum, has prepared this detailed catalogue, supplemented by a secondary list of 500 other books closely related to the V&A. The 1,500 exhibitions and displays recorded include those held in the main Museum and at its branches, the Bethnal Green Museum (now the National Museum of Childhood) and the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, and additionally those it has organized at external venues, in Great Britain and abroad. The exhibitions and publications are fully cross-referenced, and there are name, title and subject indexes to the whole work, as well as an explanatory introduction.

Book excerpt: This book presents a pictorial record of the fabrics which clothed the smart women and furnished the stylish interiors of Europe and America during the age of the Ballets Russes and jazz. The Paris 1925 Exhibition brought the richly exotic designs of Paul Poiret and Raoul Dufy to world-wide attention and the fabrics pictured here trace the Art Deco style as it evolves from its initial vibrant blossoming to a starker, more geometric look. This was a time when abstract decoration came into its own by focusing attention on pattern and ornament, as artists and designers looked afresh at the conventions of pictorial representation, and felt free to innovate with dazzling results. More than a hundred colour photographs provide a rich survey of the work of designers such as Robert Bonfils, Ruth Reeves and Marion Dorn. The V&A's collection of Art Deco textiles encompasses luxury silks, handblock printed pieces and functional man-made synthetics, and this overview features outstanding French, American and British examples from 1910-1939. Published to coincide with the Art Deco 1910-1939 exhibition, this volume is a valuable addition to the series of books illustrating the V&A's world-renowned collection of textiles, providing an essential resource for students and collectors, and an indispensable general introduction to a particularly lively and popular period of textile design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian Art School documents the history of the art school in the nineteenth century, from its origins in South Kensington to its proliferation through the major industrial centres of Britain. Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art, together with earlier examples in Manchester and Birmingham demonstrate an unprecedented concern for the provision of plentiful light and air amidst the pollution of the Victorian city. As theories of design education and local governance converged, they also reveal the struggle of the provincial city for cultural independence from the capital. Examining innovations in the use of new technologies and approaches in the design of these buildings, The Victorian Art School offers a unique and explicitly environmental reading of the Victorian city. It examines how art schools complemented civic ‘Improvement’ programmes, their contribution to the evolution of art pedagogy, the tensions that arose between the provincial schools and the capital, and the role they would play in reimagining the relationship between art and public life in a rapidly transforming society. The architects of these buildings synthesised the potential of art with the perfection of the internal environment, indelibly shaping the future cultural life of Britain.

But where the literature on fine art is vast, design is still conparatively ill-served. This encyclopedia provides an account of the still largely unknown story of design.
