Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Pharmacopoeia has provided official standards for the quality of substances, medicinal products and articles used in medicine since its first publication in 1864. It is used in over 100 countries and remains an essential global reference in pharmaceutical research and development and quality control. This book explores how these standards have been achieved through a comprehensive review of the history and development of the pharmacopoeias in the UK, from the early London, Edinburgh and Dublin national pharmacopoeias to the creation of the British Pharmacopoeia and its evolution over 150 years. Trade in medicinal substances and products has always been global, and the British Pharmacopoeia is placed in its global context as an instrument of the British Empire as it first sought to cover the needs of countries such as India and latterly as part of its role in international harmonisation of standards in Europe and elsewhere. The changing contents of the pharmacopoeias over this period reflect the changes in medical practice and the development of dosage forms from products dispensed by pharmacists to commercially manufactured products, from tinctures to the latest monoclonal antibody products. The book will be of equal value to historians of medicine and pharmacy as to practitioners of medicine, pharmacy and pharmaceutical analytical chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Fourth Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to take account of international developments in pharaceutical chemistry and to maintain the position of Practical Pharmaceutical Chemistry as the leading University textbook in the field of pharaceutical analysis and quality control. Part 2 deals with physical techniques of analysis for more advanced courses. It gives a broad coverage of the most widely used techniques in quantative chromatography. The treatmentof spectroscopy and radiopharmaceuticals has also been increased. Thre are additional chapters on the contribution and role of physical methods of analysis in the various stages of drug development; and a series of workshop-style exercises, illustrating the application of spectroscopic techniques in structural elucidation and verification of identity. Users of the two volumes will welcome the internationalisation of the text, with examples based on drugs and dosage forms that are widespread and in commun use in human medicine in Britain, continental Europe and North America. Additionally there is some reference to veterinary pharmaceuticals where they provide appropriate examples.

Book excerpt: Microbiological Quality Assurance: A Guide Towards Relevance and Reproducibility of Inocula sheds light on the difficulties of obtaining results in the test tube that will be reproducible and relevant for a wide variety of tests. This book explores the current state of research in this area and troubleshoots the problems that may be encountered in setting up appropriate cultures. The text divides naturally into three sections-growth conditions, post-growth conditions, and applications. This book serves as a valuable resource for clinical microbiologists, pharmacologists, and anyone doing in vitro experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Medicines Act 1968 together with its delegated legislation comprehensively controls the manufacture, packaging, labelling, distribution and promotion of medicines for both human and animal use in the United Kingdom. It also controls the import and export of such medicines. It replaced a patchwork of controls which evolved over a century. Since its enactment, more than 150 items of delegated legislation (orders and regulations) have been made under its provisions and about 130 are still operative. The sheer physical bulk of this mass of material causes difficulty, not only in comprehension but also in finding the detail so often required. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that some pieces of legislation have been amended several times. My principal aim is to provide a reference book which contains all of the provisions of the Act and its various orders, regulations as amended to date. The material is arranged to facilitate the search for detail. In order to assist the reader in finding his way through this maze, Chaper 1 consists of a survey of the situation which existed before the Act came into being, together with a synopsis of the present controls. This should enable the reader to appreciate the changes which have occurred and how the system works.

Book excerpt: Theory and Application of Microbiological Assay first presents an overview of microbiological assay, including general principles, basic techniques, capabilities, and limitations. This book also explains when to use a certain microbiological assay for specific analysis, citing examples to further clarify the matter. Some chapters discuss the test organisms and solutions, wherein test solutions are the final dilutions at a series of two or more concentrations that have been prepared from reference standard and unknown for application to the test system. Other chapters explore the various aspects of agar diffusion assays, tube assays, and diffusion assays. The book further looks into the quality control procedures, assay design and evaluation, and assay replication. This book will serve as an introduction to newcomers to the field and as a reference source for established workers in microbiological assay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since insulin became available for the treatment of diabetes in 1922 a number of major advances have been made, which include the modification of insulin to vary its timing of action, its purification, and latterly, the production of human insulin. Human insulin in quantities sufficiently large for therapy has been made available by two techniques developed in parallel during the late 1970s. These involve either (i) formulation in E. coli bacteria suitably encoded by DNA recombinant methods of the A- and B-chains of human insulin followed by a chain combination reaction ('biosynthetic' human insulin) or (ii) enzymatic conversion (transpeptidation) of porcine insulin brought to react with a threonine ester by porcine trypsin in a mixture of water and organic solvents, yielding human insulin ('semi-synthetic' human insulin). This book includes the first clinical-pharmacological studies of each of the highly purified 'semi-synthetic' human insulin preparations: Actrapid ® HM; Monotard® HM; Protaphane® HM; Actraphane® HM; and Ultratard® HM (Novo Industri A/S, Copenhagen). The preliminary studies established their safety and efficacy relative to their porcine and bovine counterparts emphasising the relevance of species and formulation on the pharmacokinetics and biological responses to insulin. Additional investigations with human insulin demonstrated the influence of insulin concentration, site of administration, the addition of aprotinin to insulin and the mixing of 'short-' and 'intermediate-acting' formulations on insulin 'bioavailability'. Examination of the 'within' and 'between' subject day-to-day variation in absorption and the effect of subcutaneous insulin also demonstrates the dominating influence of insulin responsiveness.

This book is divided into nine chapters that examine the biological-clinical analysis of other important groups of steroids, including sterols, vitamin D, bile acids, cardiac glycosides, and sapogenins. The material in the book is classified according to the main groups of steroids, individual chapters being devoted to sex hormones, corticosteroids, sterols, vitamins D, bile acids, cardiac glycosides, sapogenins, and miscellaneous steroids. The structure of each chapter is the same. In section 1 the fundamentals of the chemistry of the group of steroids in question are outlined. Section 2 provides a detailed description of the use of various spectroscopic, chromatographic, protein-binding and other methods, while Section 3 deals with the main problems encountered in the analysis of the group of steroids in question and with their solution using the methods described in Section 2. This book will prove useful to steroid and analytical chemists.
