Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Klonk's deeply researched accounts of the complex and often ambiguous interactions that took place between artists and scientists challenge simplistic accounts of developments in art as mere by-products of scientific progress as well as reductive socio-economic interpretations. For Klonk, the common thread running through the changes in both art and science is the emergence of a new phenomenalist conception of experience around the turn of the century. Phenomenalism involved a commitment to the scrupulous observation of particular phenomena, without making prior assumptions about meaning or underlying causes, and this ideal was common to both artists and scientists. In this way, Klonk argues, the period represents a brief moment of balance before the concerns of science and art split apart into objectivity and subjectivity, respectively.

Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the paintings in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., that were produced by British artists, or by foreign artists who spent the greater part of their working lives in Britain, from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Composed mainly of paintings acquired by such prominent nineteenth-century industrialists as Andrew Mellon and P.A.B. Widener, the core of this important collection is a series of portraits by such masters as Gainsborough, Lawrence, Raeburn, and Romney, who represent the "golden age" of British painting. Brilliant landscapes by Constable, Turner, and Wilson, among others, attest to another genre in which British artists have long excelled. Arranged alphabetically by artist, full catalogue entries articulate the history, style, content, and context of each work, with technical notes offering insight into the artists' working methods. The volume also contains introductory biographies of each artist, as well as an up-to-date bibliography for each painting.

Artists at this time employed many styles, borrowing from ancient Greece, India and China, from the Byzantine, and from the just-closing Rococo period. Nearly 100 colour illustrations place the ten primary pictures in artistic context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminating volume explores a century in British painting that produced an enormous variety of work, ranging from the beginnings of Romanticism in the late 18th century to the British adoption of impressionism in the late 19th century. Dividing this prolific period into nine sections, the work of each artist is discussed, analyzed, and presented in biographical context. With longer sections devoted to such maior figures as Lawrence, Turner, Constable, Rossetti, Leighton, and Whistler, the artists are placed in the framework of their historical, social, and economic backgrounds. The majority of the paintings and drawings that are examined are handsomely reproduced in more than 300 plates, making this an excellent choice for students, connoisseurs, and collectors as well as anyone interested in British art. Among Luke Herrmann's books is "J.M.W. Turner Watercolours and Drawings."

Book excerpt: British masterpieces of grand-style portraiture and landscape painting are explored in this volume. Portraits such as Thomas Gainsborough's Mrs. Richard Brinsley Sheridan, as well as pictures by George Romney and Sir Henry Raeburn, attest to the influence of Sir Anthony van Dyck's more sophisticated European style on artists of the period. John Constable's Wivenhoe Park, Essex and Joseph Mallord William Turner's Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight are some of the best examples of British art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Book excerpt: As Leslie Carlyle points out in The Artist's Assistant: Oil Painting Instruction Manuals and Handbooks in Britain 1800-1900 with Reference to Selected Eighteenth-Century Sources (a revised and expanded edition of her doctoral dissertation), the exchange and transmission of information among artists on the technical aspects of their calling have been carried on through mostly an "oral tradition," with some further enlightenment provided through artists' diaries, letters, and the occasional published article. In the nineteenth century in England, however, a remarkable number of books and pamphlets having to do with oil painting were published, following on the heels of a large body of work published in the previous century. This book contains remarkable scholarship of the highest order. It provides a wealth of information about the development of English oil painting in an accessible and readable way, and each chapter concludes with an extensive list of notes and references. Its story, to me at least, reveals that two hundred years ago artists and manufacturers were dealing thoughtfully and thoroughly with their materials. This is a reference that should be in every art-history library. It will prove an especially valuable resource for conservators who do research in order to treat nineteenth-century English paintings. --Publisher description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repainting the work of another into one?s own canvas is a deliberate and often highly fraught act of reuse. This book examines the creation, display, and reception of such images. Artists working in nineteenth-century London were in a peculiar position: based in an imperial metropole, yet undervalued by their competitors in continental Europe. Many claimed that Britain had yet to produce a viable national school of art. Using pictures-within-pictures, British painters challenged these claims and asserted their role in an ongoing visual tradition. By transforming pre-existing works of art, they also asserted their own painterly abilities. Recognizing these statements provided viewers with pleasure, in the form of a witty visual puzzle solved, and with prestige, in the form of cultural knowledge demonstrated. At stake for both artist and audience in such exchanges was status: the status of the painter relative to other artists, and the status of the viewer relative to other audience members. By considering these issues, this book demonstrates a new approach to images of historic displays. Through examinations of works by J.M.W. Turner, John Everett Millais, John Scarlett Davis, Emma Brownlow King, and William Powell Frith, this book reveals how these small passages of paint conveyed both personal and national meanings.

Book excerpt: From Hogarth to Reynolds, from Gainsborough to Turner, the great protagonists of English painting between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This is the first comprehensive overview of the extraordinary development of British painting during the eighteenth century, which anticipated themes, styles, and techniques that later became paradigms of modernity. This volume focuses on the English context at a time when the growth of artistic standing was accompanied by the country's conquest of hegemony on a historical, political, and economic plane. The volume is arranged chronologically in seven sections, which include a selection of over 100 masterpieces by the most significant English painters. The main objective is to enable readers to rediscover the genres of portrait and landscape, which have always characterized British art. Readers can admire the work of artists like William Hogarth, Henry Fuseli (Johann Heinrich Füssli), Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Joseph Wright of Derby, George Stubbs, John Constable, and William Turner, who offer a completely original cross section of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century painting in Great Britain.
