Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the medals awarded to British personnel for military service between 1914-2005, including two world wars. During the course of the twentieth century the role of Britain's forces changed considerably-from imperial conquest and peacekeeping to full-scale participation in both world wars, campaigns for the withdrawl from Empire and service as a prominent member of the United Nations and NATO. The campaign medals awarded for these military actions have become a popular field for collectors, since the majority of British awards were officially named, thus making it possible through them to research the military career of an individual or regiment. Book excerpt: Britain has issued medals rewarding war service since at least the early nineteenth century, and increasingly through the period of its imperial expansion prior to 1914, but examples of many of the early types are now scarce. However, few families escaped some involvement with “the Great War” of 1914 18, and many still treasure the medals awarded to their ancestors for wartime service. Today, with a growing interest in British military history and particularly in family history and genealogy, more and more people want to trace their ancestors' past. This book looks in detail at the origin, types and varieties of the British medals awarded for general war service between 1914 and '18, and gives advice on researching the awards and their recipients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their companion volume to British Army Cap Badges of the First World War, authors Peter Doyle and Chris Foster present an overview of the main cap badges worn by the British Army during the Second World War, which continued the rich and varied tradition of British regimental insignia. This book describes and illustrates, for the first time in high quality full colour, the main types of cap badge worn. With many amalgamations, war-raised units and special forces, British military insignia from the period have a surprising range that differs substantially from that worn by the soldiers of the previous generation. As in the first book, this volume contains contemporary illustrations of the soldiers themselves wearing the badges. Employing the skills of an established writer (and collector) and artist, it provides a unique reference guide for anyone interested in the British Army of the period.

This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Medals and Decorations Issued to the British Military and Naval Forces and Allies 1588 to 1910 Of late years collecting War Medals has become a very popular hobby in this country, and seems likely to rival in popularity the formation of collections of coins. No doubt one reason for this is the very fine appearance presented by the medals when decked with their proper ribbons, and also the fact that almost every medal recalls some act of gallantry performed during the campaign for which it was issued. Hitherto the standard work on the subject has been Gibson's "British Military and Naval Medals," an excellent work, and one which contains much valuable information. It only, however, touches on medals down to 1877, since when many additions to our campaign medals have been made. Previous to this work, Carter's ''Medals of the British Army" was the chief book on the subject, but it only treated on medals down to the China War, in 1860, and is more of a military history than a collector's vade-mecum.
