Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk-Songs Yes, one man at all events had taken the trouble, and had found out for himself that the country people in one small corner of Sussex were in the habit of singing. This one man was John Broadwood - whose name is to be honoured in the annals of English folk-song - who went about among the people of Sussex collecting their songs, which he published under the title of Sussex Songs, in 1843. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk-Songs for Schools This, we contend, is true in every particular, and national music may be said to be built up on folk melodies. Unhappily, with us the music of our race has been ignored, disparaged, and set aside; and our modern music is the outcome of the study of foreign models. \ive have been the very starlings of the musical world, acquiring the pipe and warble of strange birds, and forgetting our own wood-notes wild. In our primary and secondary schools no provision has been made for the teaching of folk-music to our children. They have been given tunes made in Germany, or composed for them by masters, English it may be, but speaking in another musical tongue from that of the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of English Songs: From the Sixteenth to the Nineteenth Century The Editor regrets that he has not been able to obtain, from the proprietors of the copyright of the Songs of the late Thomas M00re, permission to include in this volume any of the beautiful compositions of that writer but as every reader of taste and every lover of music is familiar with Moore's Melodies, it is hoped that the volume will not be on that account the less acceptable to those who desire to know the past as well as the present state of song-literature. The Editor cannot, while explaining this involuntary deficiency of the volume, omit to express his thanks to the living writers who have so cordially given him permission to make extracts from their works. He has also to return his acknowledgements to Messrs. Cramer and Beale, Regent Street; to Messrs. Goulding and d'almaine, of Soho Square; to Messrs. Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars and to Messrs. Adam and Charles Black, of Edinburgh, for the permis sion to insert the compositions of deceased authors, of which they possess the copyright; and to Mr. William Chappell, and Dr. E. F. Rimbault, for the kind communication of many in teresting facts connected with the authorship of old songs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk-Songs of England, Vol. 1: Folk-Songs From Dorset A large number of traditional songs have recently been recovered in England. Moreover, we believe them to be veritable folk-songs, i.a., songs which have been created or evolved by the common people. Taken in this sense, the folk-song must be definitely distinguished from the composition of the cultivated musician. It is the invention not of the individual, but of the community. Living only in the memories and on the lips of the singers, its existence has always been conditioned by its popularity, and by the accuracy with which it has reflected the ideals and taste of the common people. Consequently, the folk-song is stamped with the hall-mark of corporate approbation, and is the faithful expression in musical idiom of the qualities and characteristics of the nation to which it owes its origin. In its folk-music every nation possesses a musical heritage of priceless worth, which for many reasons it should cherish and preserve. The educational uses to which the folk-song may advantageously be put are many and obvious. It should be remembered, too, that folk-music is the germ of art-music. Style in all the arts - music, literature, poetry, painting, or sculpture - ultimately becomes national; indeed, it would be difficult to cite a single instance of a distinctive school of music in Europe which has not been founded upon a basis of folk-song. In the recovery, therefore, and dissemination of our own country's folk-music, the solution of the problem of a characteristic and national school of English music may possibly be found. In past centuries the collectors of English folk-songs were accustomed to edit and alter their folk-tunes before publishing them. In thus attempting to transmute folk-music into art-music they committed what most musicians would now agree was a fatal blunder. It is, therefore, scarcely necessary to state that the tunes contained in the present volume have not been editorially improved in any way, and that no melody will find a place in this series except in the precise form in which it was noted down by a competent musician from the lips of some folk-singer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs for Little People This book is designed for a position between such extremes as the frankly babyish song books and Stevenson's exquisite and ever lasting memorials of a child by no means typical. Considering the audience approached, it must be admitted that a few rather difficult words have been allowed entry into the verses but these have not come by chance, for the author has endeavoured to attract children up to the ages of fourteen and fifteen, as well as those requiring, because of their tenderer years, poems of the simplest sort. Mothers and grown-up sisters or aunts will, it is hoped, translate and explain whenever a young reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Literature and Classical Music explores literary representations of classical music in early 20th century British writing. Covering authors ranging from T.S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf to Aldous Huxley, H.G. Wells and D.H. Lawrence, the book examines literature produced during a period of widely proliferating philosophical, educational, and performance-oriented musical activities in both public and private settings. David Deutsch demonstrates how this proliferation caused classical music to become an increasingly vital element of British culture and a vehicle for exploring contentious issues such as social mobility, sexual freedoms, and international political rivalries. Through the use of archives of concert programs, cult novels, and letters written during the First and Second World Wars, the book examines how authors both celebrated and satirized the musicality of the lower-middle and working classes, same-sex desiring individuals, and cosmopolitan promoters of a shared European culture to depict these groups as valuable members of and - less frequently as threats to – British life.
