Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark scientific reference for scientists, researchers, and students of marine biology tackles the monumental task of taking a complete biodiversity inventory of the Gulf of Mexico with full biotic and biogeographic information. Presenting a comprehensive summary of knowledge of Gulf biota through 2004, the book includes seventy-seven chapters, which list more than fifteen thousand species in thirty-eight phyla or divisions and were written by 138 authors from seventy-one institutions in fourteen countries. This first volume of Gulf of Mexico Origin, Waters, and Biota, a multivolumed set edited by John W. Tunnell Jr., Darryl L. Felder, and Sylvia A. Earle, provides information on each species' habitat, biology, and geographic range, along with full references and a narrative introduction to the group, which opens each chapter.

Book Synopsis Marine and Brackish Water Ostracods by : Athersuch
Download or read book Marine and Brackish Water Ostracods written by Athersuch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the study of the ostracods that are common inhabitants of intertidal rock- pools, estuaries and other coastal habitats around Great Britain. It is the first comprehensive treatment of the British marine and brackish-water ostracod fauna to be published since the last century. The first part deals with the general morphology of the Ostracoda, their ecology, reproduction and life histories, and includes keys to the higher taxa as well as to 49 genera. Practical methods for the collection and study of ostracods are described in detail. The second part contains keys and notes for the identification of 116 species from British waters; for each there is a brief synonymy and description together with notes on its taxonomy, ecology and distribution, and drawings of shells and appendages. Additionally, shells of 76 of the species are illustrated by means of scanning electron micrographs. This book holds a general appeal for students of both fossil and living ostracods in all parts of the world. It will be useful to those investigating marine and brackish- water meiofauna, of which ostracods are often a major constituent.

Book Synopsis Elements of Marine Ecology by : Frances Dipper
Download or read book Elements of Marine Ecology written by Frances Dipper and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-01-12 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad definition of ecology is the study of organisms in relation to their surroundings. This book presents marine ecology as a coherent science, providing undergraduate students with an essential foundation of knowledge in the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems. The fourth edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to meet the needs of today's courses. A new chapter Human impact on the marine environment focuses on issues such as marine pollution, global warming, ocean management, marine nature reserves, and the effects of fisheries and aquaculture. New material has also been added on deep-sea hydrothermal vents and coral reefs, features such as El Nino, and ocean processes including the microbial loop, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and dimethyl sulphide (DMS). - A highly accessible survey for undergraduate students - A classic text completely revised and updated by a new author - A new chapter covers the topical area of human impacts on the marine environment

Book Synopsis Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea by : Frederick R. Schram
Download or read book Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea written by Frederick R. Schram and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific understanding of arthropod phylogeny and evolution has changed significantly in recent decades. One of the most momentous alterations involved crustaceans, which are not a monophyletc group, but are part of a larger group along with insects: Pancrustacea. The old ideas surrounding crustacean evolution have served scientists well for many years; it is now time to turn toward new research by embracing the results derived from investigations conducted largely within this century. For example, new definitions have arisen from sources across several fields of study, and Frederick R. Schram and Stefan Koenemann have created a book that explores paleobiodiversity and the diversity of modern body plans. Developments within ontogenetic studies continue to generate remarkable insights into crustaceomorph evolution in regard to patterns of embryology and a revolution in the application of development genetics. Phylogeny techniques of analysis and new sources of data derived from molecular sequencing and genetic studies have forced scientists to consider new hypotheses concerning the interrelationships of all the pancrustaceans, both the crustaceomorphs and Hexapoda. Yet, some fossil groups still remain enigmatic (Thylacocephala). Despite this, research into fossils (even if incompletely understood) fills in gaps of our knowledge of paleobiodiversity, and it's useful for many things, including analyzing the origin and early evolution of Hexapoda. Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea demonstrates the use of multiple alternative hypotheses and other techniques through the well-executed presentation of diverse data sources involving Pancrustacea. Readers are left with clues to great mysteries, including the possible pathways of evolution within marine arthropods.
