Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of Iron: Being One of a Series of Treatises on Metallurgy, Written by Associates of the Royal School of Mines During the twelve years which have elapsed, since the First Edition of this book was issued, changes which are little short of marvellous have taken place in connection with the metallurgy of iron and steel. In the direction of production, the iron resources of North America have been so developed, and the method of transporting and utilising the materials so improved, that the United States has become the chief iron producing country of the world. The better utilisation of blast-furnace gases, and the use of large gas engines, have transformed many large British and German iron works; while the applications of electricity have opened up a wonderful field for inventive skill. On the theoretical side the advances have been no less remarkable. The application of accurate pyrometers has enabled the metallurgist, with the assistance of the physical chemist, to determine the equilibrium of the iron carbon, and other systems while the application of similar methods has wonderfully extended our knowledge of the properties and constitution of slags. The micro scope, too, has been applied to cast iron, and to other metals and alloys, either as an aid to the pyrometer, or to the chemical analysis, and has opened up a new world to the skilled observer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of Iron and Steel The purpose of this book is to serve as a text-book, not only for college work, but for civil, mechanical, electrical, metallurgical, mining engineers and architects, and for those engaged in work allied to engineering or metallurgy. America now produces almost as much iron and steel as the rest of the world together, although less than eighteen years ago she held second rank in this industry. It seems fitting that the record of this progress should be brought together into one volume covering every branch of the art of ex tracting the metal from its ores and of altering its adaptable and ever-varying nature to serve the many requirements of civilized life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Metallurgy: Iron and Steel In connection with the development of this process, the work of: Mushet must not be overlooked. Following Bessemer were many who, stimulated by his success, introduced other processes of steelmaking. Of these processes, the foremost, and one that is gaining ground yearly, is that of the regenerative furnace associated with the name of Siemens. This furnace gave rise to the now well-known siemens-martin process of steel making. The product of this process is a very uniform steel, and one that ofi'ers wide adaptability for structural purposes, ship and boiler plates, castings, etc. The latest development of the siemens-martin process is that of the Talbot open-hearth continuous method of steelmaking, which attracted so much attention at the Spring meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, 1900. At this meeting the probable substitution in the near future of Bessemer steel by that of the open-hearth (siemens-martin) make was discussed. The ever-increasing strin geney of the specifications now applied to steel lends much probability to the eventual suppression of Bessemer steel by that of open-hearth make. In connection with these two methods of steelmaking, the dephosphorization process of Thomas and Gilchrist must be mentioned, resulting in the pro duction of basic steel. Germany and Bri tain annually produce large quantities of steel from basic Bessemer converters or basic lined open-hearth plants, thus utiliz in g irons for the production of good-quality metal, which, under other conditions, would be useless from a steel making point of view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel Iron is the most important of all the metals that have been pressed into the service of man, which is due, not only to its great abundance in Nature, but also to its unique properties. The result of this is that no one metal has received so much attention from both practical men and scientists, as is shown by the fact that some of the most prominent men in Europe and America are investigating the many chemical and physical properties of the metal and its application to the requirements of civilisation. Thus an enormous mass of information has accumulated, and is to be found in original papers and books. Portions of the subject are still in their youth and are growing vigorously, so that the teacher of to-day must become the student of to-morrow. On the other hand, parts of it are so old that their origin is lost in the mists of time, and dates back to the first glimmerings of that intelligence which now enables man to utilise to the fullest extent the valuable properties of the metal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the Metallurgy of Iron Steel This book was prepared to meet a need which the first Author had felt in his teaching, viz., a book which, in one volume of moderate size, would cover the whole field of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel. That the book has, to some extent at least, met this need is evidenced by the fact that a second edition has been called for. This edition has been carefully revised, and some chapters have been re-written, so that they may bring the information up to the present condition of our knowledge. Considerable attention has been given to the latest work in connection with the metallography and heat treatment of the metal. The difficulty of selection from the vast mass of material now available is very great, and the Authors have done their best to give an account of all the more important developments in processes and plant, whilst retaining as much of the older processes as is necessary to an understanding of modern developments. A few processes which are no longer in use are described on account of their historical interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Attempt is made to present in as short a manner as possible the more important principles of the metallurgy of iron and steel, and it is hoped that engineers and other users of these metals, as well as students of metallurgy, will find something of value in its pages. Practical details of the methods of production have been avoided almost entirely, in order that more attention may be devoted to such matters as an explanation of the constitution of steel and cast iron and the effect of mechanical and heat treatment on the proper ties Oi these alloys. The important subject of corrosion of steel and iron has been fully dealt with in a section specially contributed by Dr. Bengough, the editor Of this series.
