Book excerpt: Queensland was once a part of New South Wales, only separating from it in 1859. Brisbane developed into a city famous for its sunshine and relaxed atmosphere. Tourists visiting the remarkable natural wonders in the rest of Queensland use Brisbane as their starting point and base, but there is much more to Brisbane than just the city centre. Agriculture and industry across Greater Brisbane contribute to its economy, providing employment for thousands of people. There are still uncrowded beaches and areas of bushland not far from the city centre, and the beautiful islands of Moreton Bay have historic sites that will intrigue any visitor interested in Brisbane's past.

Download or read book Environmental History and Ecology of Moreton Bay written by Daryl McPhee and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The south-east Queensland region is currently experiencing the most rapid urbanisation in Australia. This growth in human population, industry and infrastructure puts pressure on the unique and diverse natural environment of Moreton Bay. Much loved by locals and holiday-goers, Moreton Bay is also an important biogeographic region because its coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and saltmarshes provide a supportive environment for both tropical and temperate species. The bay supports a large number of species of global conservation significance, including marine turtles, dugongs, dolphins, whales and migratory shorebirds, which use the area for feeding or breeding. Environmental History and Ecology of Moreton Bay provides an interdisciplinary examination of Moreton Bay, increasing understanding of existing and emerging pressures on the region and how these may be mitigated and managed. With chapters on the bay's human uses by Aboriginal peoples and later settlers, its geology, water quality, marine habitats and animal communities, and commercial and recreational fisheries, this book will be of value to students in the marine sciences, environmental consultants, policy-makers and recreational fishers.

Book Synopsis Moreton Bay People by : Peter Ludlow
Download or read book Moreton Bay People written by Peter Ludlow and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected throughout the last decade of the twentieth century, these reminiscences of ‘Moreton Bay People’ provide a unique insight into the lifestyle of the Moreton Bay area during a particular time frame of history – the twentieth century. Never again will we see a lazaret for lepers at Peel Island, a prison at St Helena, or a whaling station at Tangalooma. Hopefully, too, ‘The Bay’ will never experience another World War with its influx of foreign servicemen, or another Great Depression and its causalities seeking refuge in the bay’s islands. Between 1990 and 2000, author, Peter Ludlow, interviewed over eighty of the bay’s ‘personalities’ and then published their stories in a series of volumes entitled ‘Moreton Bay People’. Here, for the first time, they are all brought together in a single volume: “Moreton Bay People – The Complete Collection”. With its enhanced images, full indexation, and some more previously unpublished ‘gems’ this completely re-edited edition will prove essential reading to anyone – be they reference librarians of ‘boaties’ – with an interest in Moreton Bay and its people.

Book excerpt: Mirimar, Mirabel and Mirana were three ladies of Moreton Bay. Elegant, white passenger launches belonging to Hayles Cruises, they are well remembered in Brisbane for their popular bay and river excursions. First came the legendary Mirimar running to Stradbroke Island, opening the way to the jewel of Point Lookout. The diminutive Mirabel soon followed with the excellent Mirana, joining the fleet after the war. Centred in the city under the shadow of Victoria Bridge, they ran to all corners of Moreton Bay as well as upstream to Lone Pine. Built in Brisbane for Brisbane, they were a vital part of the city’s river scene and its way of life for half a century.

Book Synopsis A Long Walk Through a Short History by : Ian Hamilton
Download or read book A Long Walk Through a Short History written by Ian Hamilton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1981 Will Traverse set out to walk across the city of Brisbane; a journey that took him from an Aboriginal bora ground in the Samford valley west of the city, through the city centre, and on to a midden on Stradbroke Island. At that time Brisbane, a small city under the yoke of an ultra-conservative state government, was transitioning from what many called that great big country town into what would become the two-hundred-kilometre city. Wills journey, through time and space, maps a unique portrait of a city and its people during this time of change. Along the way he met many characters, including the last Samford dairy farmer and his dog, a woman who told him things shed held secret for too long, and an American soldier whod been stationed in Brisbane during the Pacific Campaign. There were many strange encounters, including a drunken game of racing peanuts, a conversation with six cane toads, and monsters in the night. As he walked Will sometimes recalled events from his own past. Sometimes these memories were pleasant, some bitter-sweet, but there was one, concerning a visit to a place of evil, that haunted him.
